to me sugar ray is a p4p top five fighter. his resume
is short, but packed with greatness. the loss against
duran was the result of pride, wrong tactics and it
was avenged. he had a unique skill set that allowed
him to to take a punch, outbox, outsmart and knock
out opponents. this combination of skills outweighs
the brevity of his resume for me. i for one am always
skeptical on the relevance of very long resume, since
the situation of boxing as a business was so much
different back then and seeing a great fighter was a
big thing as such, no matter if the opponent was great
or not.

the other thing with p4p lists is that the differences
between the top fighters are very small. at any point
in time you have the rankings in the different weight
classes and people in the top five very often are able
to really make a competitive fight. if you look at the
same weight class over a hundred years the top five
are now even closer to each other. you take all the
weight classes together - as p4p does - it becomes
even more dense.

if the top five in each weight class fought each other
my guess is it would on average mean a result of
116:112. for all time greats in one weight class i
would think 115:113, but for p4p top five i think it
is pretty much a draw.

Leonard hit harder than Floyd and would have gambled to get the hard shots in, it would have been a close bout as Floyd is a master but so was Benitez.
