Is Jamie McDonnell A Genuine World Champ??
Is Jamie McDonnell A Genuine World Champ??
Gets stripped of his IBF so didn't lose it in the ring, wins WBA regular against poor opposition, beats the WBO champ fair and square, doesn't get the belt so he's still stuck with his regular WBA. Seems like technically he isn't a fully fledged world champ but he deserves to be.

Fully fledged "belt holder". World champion to me means best in your division.
Though after his win on Saturday, he does have a claim to be the best at 118lbs.
Re: Is Jamie McDonnell A Genuine World Champ??
Hes not a world champion in my eyes as that regular version is bollocks
BUT if you asked me does he deserve to be a world champion after the weekend I'd say yes definitely. Similar to the Froch situation after he'd relinquished the IBF.

Wouldn't it have better if he'd relinquished his WBA 'Interim' thing and gone for the other lads 'full' WBO title?

The WBO didn't have him rated so said they would refuse to sanction it.Galvanised Clout wrote:Wouldn't it have better if he'd relinquished his WBA 'Interim' thing and gone for the other lads 'full' WBO title?

Okay thanks didn't realise that
Re: Is Jamie McDonnell A Genuine World Champ??
I don't take any notice of that belt he has. The WBA is a joke. He showed he certainly belongs at world level though and then some. I read he's moving up so maybe him vs Quigg could be a possibility as they are both Matchroom fighters? Hearn doesn't really like his guys fighting each other though so who knows.

Re: Is Jamie McDonnell A Genuine World Champ??
Two remarkable things about McDonnell.
1. He's been a really jammy sod with decisions.
2. (With respect) he's gone a long way with little talent. He's not an outstanding boxer, he's a very modest puncher, he's just very fit and works hard.
Every fight he has I'm sure the wheels are going to come off (I was certain he was in for a beating Saturday) but NO he wins yet again.

The WBO behaved pathetically.jameswilson wrote:The WBO didn't have him rated so said they would refuse to sanction it.

Napa, Jamoye, Ceja ??Horse wrote:How so?Galvanised Clout wrote:1. He's been a really jammy sod with decisions.
Re: Is Jamie McDonnell A Genuine World Champ??
Napa was the only decision that was not popular. He deserved the wins against Jamoye and Ceja.Galvanised Clout wrote:Napa, Jamoye, Ceja ??
He also lost close decisions against Haskins and Edwards.
Re: Is Jamie McDonnell A Genuine World Champ??
Harsh mate, I wouldn't say jammy...Napa maybe but the others he deserved in my opinion.Galvanised Clout wrote:Napa, Jamoye, Ceja ??Horse wrote:How so?Galvanised Clout wrote:1. He's been a really jammy sod with decisions.
Re: Is Jamie McDonnell A Genuine World Champ??
No, he doesn't hold a world title and he isn't the best in the division.

I think that is very impressive and still claiming world recognised belts, by just being fit and hard working! Good luck to him

It's not a criticism, I just think he's done remarkably considering his limitations (and he's from Doncaster)Rexob wrote:I think that is very impressive and still claiming world recognised belts, by just being fit and hard working! Good luck to him

Re: Is Jamie McDonnell A Genuine World Champ??
What is a genuine world champion these days? Any world class fighter who holds a belt? Anyone who fairly won a full version of a major title? Only the best champion in the division?
I think Jamie is world class given who is at the weight, but in my view he's only beaten one top ten fighter and I think the WBC titleist Yamanaka is better than him. He gave a laudable performance against Kameda, but him winning IBF and WBA straps prior to that is reflective of how easy it currently is to win world titles without beating elite opponents, or fighters even close to that.

"Is Jamie McDonnell A Genuine World Champ??"
I don't know, did he beat Yamanaka, and I missed it?
I mean there's either one world champ, or there might as well be none.
