Explaining The WBA Three Tier 'Titles' To A Non Boxing Fan

Post by Galvanised Clout »

Retired teacher friend of mine not really a boxing fan has a mild interest in Carl Froch, mainly because he used to teach Froch's brother (not Lee thankfully)

Anyway few weeks ago he saw in the paper that Froch (WBA 'Champion') had been nominated to fight Andre Ward (WBA 'Champion) this confused him greatly (I wonder why) so I told him of the multiple title situation (he got that) and the Super Six and all the title swapping there (he got that) BUT when I 'tried' to explain 'Regular Champions' and 'Super Champions' he was plainly bewildered (and he's an educated man) given his confusion I didn't dare explain 'Interim Champion's' to him.

Anyway saw him today and he said he's read an article in the paper regarding Froch being stripped, and the winner of this weekends fight between 'Interim Champion' Chudinov and challenger Sturm would be recognised as the 'Regular Champion' so I had to tell him the bizarre truth that the WBA does in fact have THREE 'champions' at every weight ...

He looked at me as if I was insane.

One amusing moment however, he asked 'who's this Smigga bloke that Ward's fighting?'

@Galvanised Clout...well done for even trying, you're probably a couple of steps ahead of the WBA who sometimes get a bit confused as well. Give them a call....they seem to need someone who knows what the feck is going on :TU:

I find the easiest way to explain the World Title situation to a non-boxing fan is to tell them that world titles are of no intrinsic value other than to be used as a marketing tool by promoters & TV companies so should be completely disregarded, and recommend that they simply enjoy each boxer & fight on its own merits.

Seems to do the trick.

I have a hard enough job explaining it to myself. I just disregard all titles apart from the top ones.

Galvanized Clout,if you do happen to find a way of explaining the whole mess then maybe you can explain it to the WBA who probably have less idea than your teacher friend :TU:
