Imagine how much easier Floyd would've picked off James with the way he was swinging against a slower Canelo.

Styles makes fights, Manny couldn't do jack with Floyd.
This is such a crap argument. Angel Manfredy was completely shut down and stopped by Mayweather. And Floyd was exciting in that fight. He used to be exciting. Now he is timid. You just don't want to admit it. And most fans don't appreciate a timid fight in a fight billed as this one was.

Maidana isn't as skilled as Canel, and slower too. So, he should have been able to pick him off too, right?

I regard prime Duran as a more complete fighter than Floyd. I take it you don't which is perfectly ok.
KBB wrote:I just think comparing last night's fight to Floyd vs Manny is total foolery and warrants no comparison whatsoever; is MP a Brawler that is slow, with wide telegraphed punches? Is Floyd the same as Canelo?

So why are there idiots here acting as if it was Canelo vs Manny or Floyd, it was James no defense having Kirkland.
They are comparing the entertainment value, that's all. And stop putting Kirkland down as he was a bum, he's a good fighter with a good record.

Of course the entertainment value was there when this fight was signed, Kirkland is a come in a straight ahead line kind of fighter, I never said he was a Bum, he just doesn't have elite level boxing skills. I can guarantee if this fight was Floyd or Manny vs Kirkland it would've been every bit as exciting because with a fighter like James and all his flaws he makes it easy for opportunities to arise for it to become a punchfest whether you are moving away from him or coming forward.

Don't be all sensitive about this, it's not a putdown to state what type of fighter Kirkland really is, I said Canelo would win this and he did.

Okay... Don't be sensitive about this, it's not a put down, but Floyd really is quite dull as a fighter. It's fan if your a fan but, to most he's very negative and not that enjoyable. Again don't take it personally, unless of course you actually are Floyd in which case take it personally if you wish, and don't get your knickers in a twist about it, but he's not very entertaining and he's not good value for money.

LOL to sensitive, I just don't see any of you who say things like he's dull as reasonable and here's why; first you act as if Floyd is in the ring throwing punches at the air or shadow boxing. He has an opponent you know? The other guy is supposed to do something to make him have to fight you know like "cut the ring off" but somehow they never appear good enough to do that and they are usually limited to their lowest output in bouts against him but still you blame Mayweather.

The sport is called "boxing" not brawling, there's a difference, you know?? Floyd was very exciting in his fights vs Gatti, Corrales, Mosley (who did nothing except 2 big punches), I could go on with how many more bouts that he was entertaining in but of course I don't expect you to agree.

It's whatever though, I expect action junkies to not understand how technically superior a master boxer is over his peers which is why they become limited and unable to make the fight exciting. Just remember there are two people in the ring and you cannot blame only Floyd for his fights being boring when the other guy isn't doing much of nothing to make it exciting.

The Mexican didn't have the skills to "make" the fight, because he couldn't connect with his blows. Floyd essentially "broke" the fight using his superior skill, which is precisely what he also did against Pacquiao.

You see, it took a defensively irresponsible and a strategically inept opponent like Kirkland to "make" last nights' fight against Canelo, which would have surely satisfied the masses.

However, it does disappoint me that so many self-proclaimed "hard-core" fans detest exponents of the so-called "sweet science", as they're typically labelled as "cowards".

It seems to me that brawlers excite the fans, but boxers bore them, which is a shame because I feel that both aspects of the sport should be appreciated.
Agree, it's called boxing, not fighting/brawling/scrapping. I loved he Canelo Kirkland fight but I also enjoyed watching Mayweather work his magic. It fascinates me watching top level boxers evade and counter like Floyd does.

I wouldn't say Floyd is timid because timid fighters don't throw punches or tend to limit their output once they're getting countered (that would be Manny in the Floyd fight). Floyd is cautious and calculated/more of a measured and economical fighter which goes along well with his plus-minus ratio and him having the highest accuracy of punches landed in the sport.

You have to know that it isn't prudent to compare Mayweather at 130 (who was far younger and far faster) to the Mayweather at 147 who tends to just sit in the pocket for the most part and roll his shoulders.

Yes Floyd has slowed down immensely which may have more to do with him being more cautious and calculated and more to his age than when he was at 130, but for you to blame Floyd for being timid when he threw and landed more shots than Manny Pacquiao then all I have to say is if Floyd is timid, then what in the hell would you call Manny in their fight with his lack of output??

Scared? Shy? Chickensh*t?? Frightened?? Horrified?? Gunshy?? Cowardly?? I'm not sure but it has to be a far worse adjective than "timid" especially since we know he did less than Floyd. :?? :?? :??

He's timid...

Manny couldn't set, and Floyd used his superior ring generalship and reach to keep Manny from doing so. I would have liked to have seen more urgency from Manny, but he wasn't fighting scared.

If your NFL team wins 10 to nothing, you run around bragging about how hellacious the defense is.

If your baseball team has a pitcher throw a shutout in which they turn a few double plays and rob a guy of a home run with a leaping over the wall catch, you brag about how badass the guy on the mound is and how your team fields like vacuum cleaners.

If your hockey team allow less than a goal a game because the check the hell out of folks and have a hot goalie, you proudly claim no one can stop them getting Lord Stanley's cup.

If your NBA team holds other teams under 90 points you proudly start giving them nicknames like "Bad Boys".

But a boxer that completely shuts down one of the greatest offensive fighters in boxing history, outpunches him 2 to 1 AND lands 20 more powershots?

He ran and held.

First of all Floyd threw about the same low number of punches that Manny did, I don't know where you got the 2 to 1 ratio from. Also, out-landing your opponent by 20 power punches over 12 rounds is hardly that impressive. It's called eking out a win by a few punches per round, which is exactly what happened. You may love that kind of fight but don't expect everyone to follow suit. Why isn't it enough that your man won? Everyone has to love him and find him exciting too?
