Lame fight, although I assume Kovalev is now in the Golovkin situation where the top guys (Stevenson, Braehmer) want nothing to do with him.

Why not Chilemba though? It would make sense since they just fought on the same card.

Mohammedi is a mandatory. He agreed to wait till after the Pascal fight but now Kovalev has to fight or vacate one of his belts.

But Mohammedi is Kovalev's IBF mandatory, he has to fight him or give up the belt. Then Kovalev will fight Stevenson, unless Adonis drops his WBC belt.

Kovalev wants to unify all the belts at 175.

Chilemba will be a future opponent. There will also be a rematch with Pascal, probably in 2016 (another financially lucrative fight).

It's an okay fight in my opinion. NM is his mandatory and has significantly improved over the last few years, to the point where I think he has a good case for being a legitimate top ten fighter in the division. I don't think he's as good as Chilemba, who I suspect will also fight Kovalev eventually, but he's not dross like I'm sure some will suggest just because they hadn't heard of him.

While the fight was entertaining it's hard for me to get excited about a rematch. Pascal had moments but I gave him only one round and there were more rounds in which he was staggering around than there were rounds in which he was having sustained success.

He looks like a beast to me in the same vein as Kovalev, just a cheap man's version.
Should be a good slugfest for a little while at least.

True, but Pascal and his team seem to have convinced themselves it was an early stoppage and they will do better in a rematch.

Duva said Kovalev will rematch Pascal, but not right away.

I know people will complain, especially after Kovalev destroys Mohammedi in 2-3 rounds, but Mohammedi is mandatory challenger for his title. And he is better opponent than Agnew and Capparello. At least he can punch.

Kovalev deserves and easier fight after two tough fights in a row.

Anybody read french?

Sounds like the Yvon Michal/Al Haymon side are trying to push Adonis vs Sergey to a purse bid with intentions of a fight in the fall if Google Translate isn't messing with me.
In an interview with RDS, the President of GYM, Yvon Michel said that this application is intended to prevent the who defeated Jean Pascal to make his mandatory defense of his IBF crown. "As a fight of this magnitude requires a long preparation time, we do not want to wait for Kovalev faces Nadjib Mohammedi. We want to be faster than that, we want to ask the WBC to decide a date of tender.

The decision to move forward to face Sergey Kovalev was taken over the weekend by Yvon Michel, Adonis Stevenson and manager Al Haymon. "Our goal is to fight with Kovalev and we will try to bring this fight to Quebec in the fall.

If Kov is fighting in June or July it seems to me like there would be plenty of time for a fight later in the year, with the winner becoming the undisputed champion. If the IBF title is vacant or with someone else it will allow fighters to pursue an easier path to a major title and thus likely be a roadblock to good match-ups.

I think Kovalev will get fights...GGG and/or his people r keeping away from big fights. Kovalev will get Stevenson. Mohammedi is a Mandatory fight...let him get it over with. Braehmer is a joke, he'll never fight a top light heavy, he'll stay in europe and fight guys nobody has heard of til he gets beat again. That dude doesn't even count title or no title.

I've never seen Mohammedi, don't know anything about him as a boxer.
What I do know is that he was the IBF mandatory when BHop held that belt but Hops got out of that fight by taking the unification bout with Kovalev.
Mohammedi was still the mandatory challenger but waited for Kovalev to take the Pascal fight.
Sooner or later this guy needs to get his shot, just because he is a relative unknown and probably a no-hoper doesn't mean the title holder should never have to fight him.

The networks weren't interested in Hopkins vs Mohammedi so he scrambled to avoid being stripped for not facing his mandatory.
I hope they don't do the same thing to Kovalev. Let him get this mandatory out of the way.

There should be a HBO co-feature for this one on July 18, since Mohammedi isn't well-known.

Perhaps they could have Isaac Chilemba take on a good Top Rank light heavyweight like Gvozdyk or Mekhontsev? Gvozdyk is very talented, and should be moved quickly because of his extensive amateur career.

Or perhaps a Main Events fighter like Glazkov take on a heavyweight contender someone who isn't a Haymon boxer (like Andy Ruiz)?

It's his mandatory so he doesnt lose his belt. Kovalev has been fighting good fighters. It's not like he's CHOOSING to fight this guy. After Hopkins and Pascal we shouldnt have a problem with him taking on a lesser known mandatory.

I'll watch Kovalev fight a heavy bag. Nadjib is considerably better than a heavy bag.

Pretty much. There's a lot of statements you would expect from Michel about wanting the fight to happen as soon as possible and all that. He did mention the fall and the wanting the fight in Quebec. It also said Michel and Duva weren't actually talking, but that was two months ago.

All in all, Google translate did an acceptable job, which is strange. I'm surprised you didn't wind up with a recipe for soup or something.

There was supposed to be a co-feature on the Kovalev/Pascal card but Duva said there weren't any slots left. Then magically a slot opened up for Chilemba.

Nadjib Mohammedi will make Kovalev crazy.

From a french who followed his carreer, you guys should really not underestimate this fighter. He isn't a puncher but he has way more stamina than Kovalev, more faster and smarter, pure agressive mexican style and always in movement, very difficult to fight.

The upset is very possible.

Kovalev wins this easy.

I still remember Cleverly fighting mohammedi and he didn't look anything special then.
