Broner V Porter

Post by MrJasonM »

Been announced for June 20th.

I really like this fight, and would be surprised if it went the distance.

Who do you guys fancy?

I lean towards Broner even though he isnt the same animal at Welterweight.

Should be a really fun fight. One actually worth thanking Al Haymon for.

The fight has been made at 145 with a rehydration clause - still fancy Porter though.

Yeah, it all depends on how much he is affected by it. At 147, with no rehydration clause, I'd take Porter all day.

Good match up! I think Porter will be too big and bully Broner like Maidana did. Broner is an odious little f*ckwit but he showed his toughness in that fight so we could be in for a treat. Can't see any stoppages tbh.

Depends on how Porter is with the weight. If it was standard 147 I'm convinced Porter would destroy him.

WTF is a rehydration clause - what, he's not allowed to rehydrate, or he's not allowed to put on more than a certain amount after the weigh in - what manner of bumfuckries is this!?

From what I understand the rehydration clause is that he has to make a second limit on the day of the fight (similar to the IBF's same day weigh in).

I'm sure Canelo had one in his contract for the Mayweather fight.

What a load of shite that is,hate it when this happens, like pacman fighting in catchweights to gain the advantage, next they'll adding a clause saying your not to try hit the other fella too hard :shame:

Clauses and catchweights make it so hard for boxing to attract new fans as it just makes it all so confusing.

In theory a rehydration clause is fine, it just depends on how little he is allowed to rehydrate.

I don't think fighters should be entering the ring at way over the division's weight limit anyway.

i'd rather that than they be dehydrated though.

a rehydration clause is potentially very dangerous.

That's the problem with 24 hour weigh ins,if you really struggle your going to pile it back on in the 24 hours or so before the fight, you can't win either way.

What is the rehydration limit for this fight? Is it unreasonable?

Rehydration clause is for 155lbs.

Porter might struggle with that. I mean he turned pro weighing 165lbs!

Fair fight at 147lbs with no clauses I'd favour Porter heavily. With the catch weight and rehydration clause, it all depends on how Porter reacts to making that weight.

I think it's dangerous and farcical - jesus, is it any wonder boxing is not a mainstream sport any more. People crow on about how much money Mayweather and Pacquaio made as evidence of the rude health of boxing - but frankly I think it's a smokescreen - boxing continues to become less and less relevant in terms of regular sport and stupid clauses like this help that - catchweights are nothing new, but this is a dangerous and foolish precedent.

But the thing is, the water weight put back on is vital - it's water that was drained from the tissues in the first place by sweating out liquids and limiting intake of water, which is bad for you as it is, without then restricting how much liquid you take in afterwards.

The only way around that, would be for porter to shed muscle tissue in the lead up to the fight, which is neither easily done, nor recommended in terms of the effects on the metabolism, because to be done quickly, you pretty much have to starve yourself as muscle doesn't atrophy quickly enough for most fight schedules.

I have serious misgivings about a man who is clearly naturally big being forced down to a weight much lower than is normal, and then being restricted as to how much weight he can put back on come fight night.

Exactly. It's intentionally making your opponent weaker. What happened to wanting to fight the best hey?

My problem isn't with that per se - at the end of the day Porter is not being forced at gunpoint - he could just refuse the fight - it is more than the local commission would sanction such practices, again, I guess this is where not having a single governing body comes in, if they refused to sanction it, the fight would just move elsewhere - but I think it's an accident waiting to happen allowing fighters to take liberties with their own health for a buck. the sport is dangerous enough as it is without augmenting the risk further by messing about with rehydration.

I know Mayweather vs Canelo, mayweather had Canelo weigh in 2 pounds under the 154 limit but I am 100% sure there wasn't a rehydration clause. The person that used the rehydration clause the most was Manny Pacqaiuo, Manny had this clause against Cotto, De La Hoya and Margarito to my knowledge and may well be a factor as to him looking so much stronger/fitter etc against these guys.

Its a shame fighters can't just choose a weight class and fight in it. Its not like there is a shortage of choice. Perhaps this could all be sorted by making fighters weigh in on the day of the fight and have some sort of hydration test so they don't blow up overnight but are fit to fight when they get in the ring.

For what its worth I'd lean towards a win by Porter
