How often should boxers fight?
How often should boxers fight?
With Gennady Golovkin fighting consistently every three months at the moment, and with Kell Brook fighting twice in two months, how often should or would you like to see a top level boxer fighting?
Ignoring journeyman and kind of ignoring Mayweather who is the other end of the scale, what can be done to get boxers more active and fighting more times a year? Or should they fight more times a year?
Should governing bodies order mandatories and eliminators quicker than they already do?

Depend how tough the previous fight is, Gonzarles could fight every Saturday.
Re: How often should boxers fight?
No, I was counting from his fight against JoJo Dan upto fighting Frankie Gavin, two months later.Ghost Train wrote:Does Brook have another fight lined up after Gavin?MrJasonM wrote:Kell Brook fighting twice in two months
Re: How often should boxers fight?
Think golovkins got it about right, hate to see boxers in their primes wasting years by being inactive, on a side note anyone remember Eubanks world tour thing I'm sure the deal was for 10 fights in 12 months !
Re: How often should boxers fight?
At the top level in tough 50/50 fights 2 to 3 times a year is pleanty,on the way up in learning fights 4 to 5 times a year
Re: How often should boxers fight?
would be good to see the top guys fight 6/7 times every 24 months if they were injury free. There is that much red tape nowadays holding things up though!
Re: How often should boxers fight?
I'd like to see fighters with hundreds of fights on their records just like the good old days.

Whenever anyone makes fun of their nan

Re: How often should boxers fight?
3-4 times in a year, depending how much punishment you are taking. If you are Provodnikov then once a year lol.
Re: How often should boxers fight?
Every 3-4 months! There is no injury unless serious that should keep you out for longer than that

I'd like to enforce a one-defence minimum every six months for belt-holders. To be a real champion, that's the deal.

Not quite, I think it was 8 fights, I was at the first one at Olympia against Amaral which was odd. Eubank pulled up in a motorcade of three stretch limos to a private entrance while his opponent pulled up in a C-reg battered Ford Transit, climbed out the back and walked with the crowd, through the main entrance and asked where to go! I was stood there gobsmacked while he was ignored as most people did not recognise him. I only did as he was stood near a poster with his picture on it!

I think with Brook they are trying the approach Fwank had with Ricky. Keep him busy, his weight down and he can't get himself locked up, stabbed, etc.

Four times a week.

If it was still on the day weigh in's I think we would see boxers being more active but at the moment a lot of the time between fights is spent cutting weight etc. With same day weigh in's people would be nearer their natural weight and ready to go more often....... I think.

I've always felt a world champion (especially an undisputed one) should be defending his title 4 times year & that doesn't happen so much these days.

Is Brook that kind of guy?mickey1975 wrote:I think with Brook they are trying the approach Fwank had with Ricky. Keep him busy, his weight down and he can't get himself locked up, stabbed, etc.
He comes across as someone who's pretty focused & level headed & doesn't seem like a guy who would act like Hatton & gorge on pies & beer, or get into trouble like some others, although, I have to wonder what the deal was with that leg stabbing he suffered last year.

He does seem rather unlucky where knives are concerned.Syntax Error wrote:Is Brook that kind of guy?mickey1975 wrote:I think with Brook they are trying the approach Fwank had with Ricky. Keep him busy, his weight down and he can't get himself locked up, stabbed, etc.

Re: How often should boxers fight?
It really depends on who the boxer is and their aspirations etc.
I remember Mike Tyson boxed every 6 weeks in the early days as this was used to develop a profile and to keep him in shape and motivated etc.
where boxers (particularly domestic level lads) are only boxing once or twice a year it must be really difficult to get and maintain some kind of momentum and you can see how boxers get disillusioned.
Anyway, here goes .....
Journeymen - as often as they want / are able
Domestic Level / Novice pro - I would say at least 6 or 7 times a year
Domestic level with aspirations of British title - again, ideally half a dozen times a year but this can be plus or minus one or two depending on timing of the "right" fights.
British Champion - there should be plenty of options available for fights - I would say they should be fighting 4 or 5 times a year.
European level - again it is dependent on the timing of the right fights, but 4 times a year.
Aspirations of World title - need to build and maintain momentum and still be fighting 4 times a year I think.
World champion - again need to keep momentum, likely at an age where weight could be an issue so still need to fight regularly, and also need to cash in. I would say they should fight at least 3 times a year (with a requirement to defend every 6 months maximum).
