Perez starts off to a quick start again. He fades again. Povetkin pounds out a decision.

To me it seems like conditioning has been more of a factor than killer instinct. He was beating Jennings and Takam after 5 but faded badly as the fight progressed.

the consitioning might have to do with the lack of Motivation too. if you don't want to punish your Opponent in the ring it is also hard to motivate yourself in training.

that is kinda sad as perez is technically a very well schooled fighter but as a shorter fighter with medium punching power he is going to Need Fitness and "killer instinct" to succeed.

it is not that perez Looks totally lost. he had Close fights against a good fighter Jennings and solid takam despite being out of shape of lacking aggressiveness in the ring, he still does hang in there but the last 5-10% are missing.

his technical ability and head movement will prevent him from getting steamrolled by AP but I see him losing a decision like 116:112.

It may be that his poor conditioning is partially a product of the Mago bout, but he was actually 4 pounds lighter for his fight with Takam. Also keep in mind that he hadn't faced top opposition until after beating Mago, so there aren't fights with people like Takam, Povetkin, and Jennings that we can point to and say that he performed better in those than he did in the post-Mago bouts.

To me he seems like the same fighter, but after facing Mago his opposition got tougher and he couldn't cut it.

If the Mago fight did ruin Perez then it's more proof that Heavyweights shouldn't fight like the lighter weights since they punch significantly harder and absorb much more punishment. Something boxing's more influential voices have still yet to understand.

As I opined somewhere in this thread, Mike Perez is a seriously overrated heavyweight.

Physically, he looks like he would have fit in fine with those 80s heavyweights. The obese Pages, Tubbs and Witherspoons.

But in terms of actual skills, they would have blown him away quicker than Povetkin did.

Maybe he should be matched up with another big favorite here, that Pulev guy. Sounds like pick 'em fight.
