He has one very nice win over the limited Gonzalez, I dont know who he could fight next other than another titlist or Glen Johnson to try and avenge that loss.

Roy Jones? Please...I would much rather prefer an ADmek match or a fight with Briggs.

And whoever suggested the Argentine Hernan Garay isnt too far off....thats a fighter who isnt ranked terribly highly atm due to his loss to Erdei, but in reality a very young and rugged version of Garay outboxed Zsolt Erdei in my opinion, but was screwed by the German judges, TWICE.

If he has continued improving, Garay just might stand a chance against Woods in Sheffield.
i had Erdei outboxing Garay in both of those nip & tuck fights. he didn't really take anything of consequence, blocking most of the shots and replying with clever & clean counters. Erdei's so quick with his counters that scoring shots are hard to see, making him difficult to score. Whereas Garay seemed to get too much credit from some ppl for ineffective aggression.

Erdei really dominated Gonzalez. I think Erdei fights Tiozzo this year. Great fight, if it happens

I also admire Woods' improvement, but I can't see him beating Briggs, Adamek or Erdei - if you give Erdei any room he'll handle you. I'd pick CW to beat Johnson & Jones in rubber/re- matches, however.

Woods has gotten rave reviews from his last two fights, deservedly so. But so has Adamek against better opposition. Adamek would stop Clinton, in my view.
I dont think theres any way that Erdei won both of the fights with Garay. I will have to look at the tape again, however, of the second fight, as I was in Europe at the time and having a good time with my friends while watching the fight (not the best atmosphere for scoring a fight  ).

I will say with confidence that Garay at the very least earned a draw in the first fight. An Erdei win was not out of the question, but it was certainly stretching it. I think Garay outworked Zsolt considerably on the inside, and that won him the fight, despite many of his blows catching gloves or elbows.

At any rate, Garay has done little to warrant a shot since his fights with Erdei, so Woods is probably correct in assuming this will be more of an easy defence...however, Garay is very young, and there is the (slight) chance that he has maximized his potential and improved since the Erdei fights.

Again, this is doubtful, as the Argie mods on here have said that Garay's last fight was a stinker. Oh well, we'll jsut have to wait and see what happens. I hope they announce it soon though, March is coming up quick.

Better opp? All I've heard of on his list is Briggs Woods went against a prime Jones and gave Johnson 2 tough fights. Johnson already Ko'ed Ulrish before Adamek.

Briggs couldn't even take advantage of Adameks broken nose.

And Jones and Julian Letterlough both already made Gonzalez into a yo-yo...whats youre point?

I would say at this stage Adamek has fought the better comp, but it can only be clear as to who the better man is if they settleit in the ring.

adamek briggs erdei tarver and tiozzo would all beat woods IMO. good luck to the bloke though for finally winning a title and defending it but the guys i mentioned before would beat him.

Briggs is a fornicating good fighter. H's tough as nails & has puts great leverage into his punches. He was actually a professional kickboxing world champion by the age of 18, and has adapted to pro boxing well. Sure Briggs couldn't take adv of TA's broken nose, but Briggs was also handicapped with a bad cut. We haven't seen the best of him yet

Wasn't cut till the fight though.

Adamek went into it with a broken nose before it started.

sure, i'm saying that they were both handicapped for most of the fight. briggs was cut very early, before he'd settled into his rhythm. hopefully they have a rematch.

As far as I know Adamek completed only 30 rounds of sparring, because he broke his nose training for the Briggs fight.

This was the main reason he ate so many powershots ond of his bad timing IMO.

Really?

Thatd be sad news if they got someone much worse than Garay or Aurino (those guys are pretty good, but it drops off after that).

Can I get a source for this info?

There is no web link but I can assure you that sky TV made the same comment as you i.e garay was acceptable but nobody ranked lower.
I think team woods are looking towards the proposed June fight with Johnson whilst trying to fit in a fight inbetween, unfortuanatly with skys new boxing policy it'll be difficult to get clintons "warm up" televised. Without TV money there is little that can be done without going stateside.

Woods-Johnson is good enough for me. IMO Woods can win this one. His confidence will be much higher as DEFENDING champion.

ppl overlook that he had a massive last round in their first fight. I had Johnson no more than a point or two in front after 11 rds, and Woods staggered, beat on AND dropped him. the ref didn't acknowledge the knockdown but it was a proper one. GJ's legs went after an uppercut and he had a delayed fall.

he's far more lively and sharp with his technique now. i'vre noticed Clinton has got pretty good at wearing ppl down, after the Hoye & Gonzalez fights

let's see Woods-GJ, Adamek-Briggs II, Erdei-Tiozzo and Tarver vs the best available contender - how about Eric Harding III, LOL

yeah i was laughing cos there's no way tarver would want the high risk, low pay fight that i'd like to see . harding gives tarver nightmares, imo

i heard on the current scene that Showtime offered Tarver a Kessler fight, but AT's not bothered. damn

Thanks for the info. :TU:

Kind of a sad situation, really...if SKY is televising the fight and neither Aurino (very good fighter) nor Garay (pretty good fighter) take the fight, that leaves who?

The IBF ratings according to fightnews:

1. Glengoffe Johnson...NO...unavailable until June fight date.
2. Juilo Gonzalez...NO...doubtful anyone would televise an immediate rematch when Clinto beat him convincingly in his very last fight.
3. Antonio Tarver...NO...not happening.
4. Paul Briggs...THIS Id like to see! Briggs could KO Clinton, thisd be real fun. Probability? Not too high atm, as Paul is the WBC #1 and is high risk, medium reward.
5. Silvio Branco...NO...WBA #1 waiting for big payday and far easier fight against Fenchman Tiozzo.
6. Pietro Aurino...Possibly, would be a close fight.
7. Hugo Garay...Priced himself out?
8. George Jones...Possible (sad choice)
9. Eric Harding...Possible
10. Montell Griffin...Possible
11. Stipe Drews...Possible
12. Roy Jones, Jr...NO...Jones fight already fell apart, doubtful it happens now on such short notice.
13. Rico Hoye...NO...wont get rematch til hes mandatory.
14. Lou Del Valle...Possible (sad choice)
15. Jason Delisle...Possible (sad choice)

Now if SKY has laid out the rule of "nobody lower than Garay" then that leaves Aurino, Branco, Briggs and Gonzalez as viabel options for March/April, since Garay has (apparently) outpriced himself. Aurino may or may not take the fight (hes coming off an injury), and I dont see Branco nor Gonzalez getting the fight, for the reasons mentioned above, so IF SKY is involved we may get to see Paul Briggs get the opportunity...I wonder if Briggs will take it, if he's offered the Adamek fight at the same time?

If Briggs wants the shot, Clinto may also say "to hell with SKY" and fight someonbody as low down as a Jason Delisle. :(

As a side note I got the impression it may have been ranked lower in the independant rankings, a compromise will need to be reached by both parties. Really dont think team Woods want a Briggs or a Adamek tho.

I think the big money is in the June / July showdown with mandatory challenger and recognised number 2 light heavy Glencoffe Johnson. Dont suppose form a promotional point of view they want to jepordise that shot, also with tarver moving up Johnosn would be widely recognised as number 1 ? Woods beats him will he be widely recognised as number 1?

Dont know about that...but I think youre right, theyll settle for lower than Garay, not for higher...good thing that SKY is putting some pressure on the situation though, but now that I think about it no way will WOods want to fight Briggs now...he wont even be ready for an August fight if he takes a "tune up" with Paul.

It might be Johnson's best offer though. I'm sure he wants another crack at Tarver, but he's not going to get one. A decent payday could change his mind about a trip to Sheffield. I certainly wouldn't mind a third fight.

The fight is happening in the summer, provided they both win. Johnson apparently cahnged his mind...LAST WEEK on boxingtalk he said clearly, when asked if he wants to fight Adamek, he said "Id like Clinton Woods again first."

I cant see Clinton being KO'd by Briggs to be perfectly honest. Briggs is an overated fighter, ok he can punch a bit , but lets put it into perspecvtive Roy Jones Jr at his peak couldnt put Woods down , neither could Johnson or Gonzalez.

Briggs doesnt have proven world class power - a world class puncher and finisher would have put Drews away when he had the oppurtuinity to do so. I'd say Gonzalez is a harder and more acurate puncher than Briggs.

In my eyes, it would be a Woods win on points (vs Briggs)
