katie is a great amateur woman boxer, but how many weight classes were there in the olympics on the women's side? 3 or 4?
women's boxing is still in its infancy at this stage, with a relatively small pool of athletes, so can't really put her in the same category as savon or stevenson or the greats, no matter how many titles she wins. that is not to put down women's boxing or women athletes, but i would say that in tennis girls around the world start really young and put a lot of time into it and maybe the top women don't have the same power as the top guys but the skills are all there at the top level. women's boxing still has a long way to go. love katie, though. marlen esparza was fun to watch this year, too.

if you just go by this last olympics, lomachenko from the ukraine had a silver from the 2007 worlds, golds at the 2009 and 2011 worlds, and olympic golds in 2008 and 2012. sapiev from kazakhstan won golds at the worlds in 2005 and 2007 and 2012 olympic gold. zou zhiming has golds from the 2005 and 2007 worlds and 2008 and 2012 olympic gold. i think somluck kamsing from thailand was in 4 olympics with a gold in atlanta, so in asia and eastern europe you have guys who spend their whole careers as "amateurs" fighting all the international tournaments against the best in the world and have world and olympic gold medals and in the west people don't even know their names

Vasyl Lomachenko has perhaps the best record of them all: 396- 1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasyl_Loma ... ite_note-4

1. Shimming - 2x Olympic, 3x World
2. Lomachenko - 2x Olympic, 2x World
3. Rigondeaux - 2x Olympic, 2x World

It is all about the titles not win lose ratio.

Savon - 3x Olympic, 6x World
Stevenson - 3x Olympic, 3x World

Hilton brothers had great amateur records. Believe Matthew was 106-0. Too bad their family life was such a train wreck. Matthew was the first champ Canadian to win a world title since the 40s though....beating Benitez, Anterfuermo and Drayton to name a few.

Ingemar Johansson was 74 (63-11, 30 KO), not as stated above.

I've seen the bout between Curry and a Swedish kid, Curry is beating the lad easily and gets cut and loses.

Luke Campbell has a good record.

What was Errol Christie's record?
Has Kindelan been forgotten?
I bet Amir Khan had some record too.
Shaun Gray was 32-3 with 28 KOs - 2 of the losses to Sam Boreham, avenged with a first round KO - its a very good record because for 4 years Gray boxed only in national title shows, no club shows - retired at 17 years old.
George Collins had a great record.

This may be common knowledge that has somehow slipped past me, but how are these records kept? Is it just from the individual's memory or is there a physical record etc..? Does anyone know how it works?

Thanks

Wasn't Harry Mallin 300-0 or something? 2 time Olympic champion and (one of?) the most successful amateur(s) in British boxing history

There's a boxers card that is kept by the boxing club secretary, it is needed when matchmaking, it belongs to the boxer and if they change clubs or retire it goes with them.

That's alright :TU: it used to be the same card with the medical check with the doctor, if there wasn't a checkable record there'd be some awful mismatches with open class boxers feasting on novices.

Curry et al.
400-4 sounds strange to me. How many of these fights are verified? Why take Curry´s claim for granted? Every amateur fighter gets, his or hers, share of bad decisions. Was he never robbed by a hometown decision? Add to that all kind of injuries....

Over 400 fights is hard for me to believe.

Thing about amateur records is that it's very easy to make them up. amd I suspect that many of the records in this thread are inaccurate.
