top 10 P4P

Post by keirw »

At the moment the UK only has one man in the top ten P4P lists, and he is disputed by some.
He is also likely to retire later this year.
Who, amoung the UKs top current fighters, has the best chance to break into the P4P top ten by the end of the year? If any

Definitely can't see any of the above breaking into the Top 10 P4P by the end of the year. Generally speaking, I'd say Frampton is the most likely to be in with a shout of making it there at some point though.

Too early for them to get on the list this year. They are all really at the stage of establishing themselves as alphabet champions, next year will be solidifying their status as 'the' man at the weight.

Jamie McDonnell would probably be the guy who has the best shot depending on his next opponent

I'm not sure. It all depends on who they fight and obviously results etc... Personally I like Frampton but things have gone hell of a quiet in his camp recently. Does anyone think DeGale could trouble Ward if they fought?

I guess it depends on how Ward is now. The version of Degale we saw against Dirrell loses to Ward 2 years back by a long way

How would McDonnell be top 10 P4P? He isn't top 100 right now, isn't a world champion and there isn't anyone at bantamweight that he could beat that would move him into contention.

Fury and Khan are most likely for me, don't think either will make it but Fury's fighting a top 10 fighter and Khan could possibly fight one, so they're the only two that will have the opposition that gives them the chance to reach that level.

Brook for me if he beats some top names in the Welter division like Thurman/Bradley/Manny/Khan but that wont be before the end of the year.

He should be. He's won two alphabet titles (IBF & WBA) and not lost for a good few years now beating some good level opponents. He's at a stage now where he should be pushing to establish himself as the man at his weight and into P4P recognition territory.

He has more right to be in that list than Quigg, Saunders & Groves (at the minute).

His WBA 'title' is worthless, Juan Carlos Payano is the WBA champion. The only world class opponent he's beaten is Kameda a couple of weeks ago, who's the third best bantamweight in Japan, Ceja and Hall were good wins but most of his opposition for the last 3-4 years has been pretty poor. Even if he cleaned out the division, which I can't see him doing, he wouldn't be in P4P territory, there just isn't enough quality at bantamweight for him to get there. He'd need to beat all the top names at bantamweight, then move up and beat Frampton before we could start talking about him as a P4P level fighter.

I don't necessarily disagree with much of what you have said but the same criteria pretty much applies to everyone else in the list at the top and McDonnell is ahead of most of them due to what he has already done ie vacant IBF 'world title, WBA 'world' title, win over world class opponent.

Fury – Best win is against Chisora. Would have to beat Wilder (or Wlad) and then dominate the rest of the division to be considered.
Degale – Won the vacant IBF (as did McDonnell) against another contender. Needs world class wins on his ledger.
Groves – Never been world champion. Stopped twice and not looked great since coming back. No significant win in years. Needs to win title, beat world class opponents.
Saunders – No world title. Best wins are domestic opponents. Needs to win title, beat world class opponents and possibly Cotto (GGG!!) to make it.
Khan – No world title. Coming off his best win but in his biggest fights against other champions he has been beaten. Needs to win a title, beat other world class welters and contenders to Mayweather to make it.
Brook – If he starts cleaning up the other world class welters and belts at ww he will
Selby - No world title. Best wins are domestic opponents. Needs to win title, beat world class opponents and get a couple of major wins under his belt
Frampton – Probably the closest shot as he is being mentioned in the same breath as the two other top guys and considered to be in with a chance against them.
Quigg – No significant win, WBA reg title, next opponent is a guy who has been thumped twice by a domestic rival etc etc.

I'm not saying McDonnell is a P4P contender just that out of those given, he's in a good position in comparison to the others as he has actually achieved things.

If Fury wins his next fight he'll enter the top 10.
DeGale beating Dirrell trumps any win on McDonnell's record and because of the other fighters in the division, the opportunities to reach that sort of level should be there.
Groves matched Froch, who many people consider to be in the top 10, for most of their fights, he might not have the wins on his record but he's proven he can compete at that level.
Saunders is a long way off at this stage but he's put together a good run at domestic/European level and will fight for a world title in the autumn.
Khan isn't at that level, but welterweight is so strong that a couple of good wins puts him in contention and obviously there's potentially a fight with Mayweather where a win would move him well inside the top 10.
Brook has the same potential as Khan, although he might struggle to get the big fights he needs because he isn't well known in America.
Selby's the furthest away on that list, beating Gradovich would be a step in the right direction but he'd need to go on and unify after that.
Frampton's potentially 2 or 3 fights away and IMO he has the ability to get there, just needs to get the right fights.
Quigg's some way off, his opposition for the last couple of years has been poor and while Martinez would be his best win, as you say Frampton has already beaten him twice in convincing fashion.

McDonnell could and probably should have been included in the poll, but at least 5 of the fighters in there are above him. He beat Ceja, who's never been in at world level before or after their fight, then beat Kameda in his last fight, which was a great win, but in between he fought some poor opponents and was struggling badly against Chacon until he injured his shoulder.

McDonnell is top 100 P4P.

If McDonnell beat Yamanaka then he would be a top 10 P4P contender.

I would have included McDonnell in the poll but it only allowed me 10 options. Which only gives me 9 fighters after I added the 'none' option (currently 2nd).
I simply went through the divisions from the top and ran out of room before I got to McDonnell.
I considered swapping him in for someone, but chose not to.Even though Kameda was a better win than anything most fighters have done, he is talking of moving up for his next fight, I think that is a bad move for him.

I'd say Fury is most likely because he's the only one that will fight someone this year who could get him into the top 10 if he was to win.

If you describe Tomoki as Japan's #3 at the weight, who do you put at #2? Iwasa? Omori? Akaho? Matsumoto?

1. Frampton has the best chances. All he need to do is beat Rigo.
2. DeGale. All he needs to do is beat Ward.
3. Fury. Needs to beat Klitscko and somebody else with quality.

Khan, Brook, Selby, Quigg. Remote chance, need several big names.

Saunders. Zero chance, needs to beat 3xG.
