what did we learn about Brook/Gavin/Mitchell/Linares/Selby/Gradovich

Post by davie »

That we didn't already know?
Any surprises?

Aside from the obligatory "told you so" bumping of threads from the smartarses who called it right :OhYes:

I was pleasantly surprised at just how comfortable Brook and Selby were (although I did predict they'd win(excusd the told you so))

I didn't think Sleby woul dominate like he did he was class. Always seems big for the weight may not stay around and move up.

Mitchell can get into a war and has the heart to go through it. That's the only thing we didn't already know about any of them, confirmed a lot of other things though.

Was that not already known from the Johansson fight? Id actually say Linares gutting it out was a bigger surprise.

Yeah, Brook made it look easy stopping Gavin I thought Frankie might have done a bit more than he did on his big occasion but it wasn't to be going off that I don't think he will do anything above Euro level doesn't seemed to improved much since he started pro? Brook is going to be hard to beat by any top contender.
Selby was very impressive stopping Gradovich very good! stepped up and delivered, I think he was made for Selby with his storming style lets see how Selby gets on with a decent boxer? but the future is bright for him.
Mitchell well gutted he didn't come through that fight as he was winning and showed a warriors heart! but glad the ref stopped it, as he was pretty battered up by the end! Fairplay to Linares getting back up from a tough knockdown, and coming back from that! I'm sure Mitchell may come again in a quickish rematch, as it really was only the bad injuries that stopped him in the end, he was very focused last night just a bit unlucky his face didn't hold up!

We finally saw the world class talent Lee Selby posses, the better the opponent the better he is.

And the Murray fight. He was bust up pretty bad in that one.

Mitchell is brave, but never quite clicks onto his best form in a world title fight.

Well we learnt that it's about time "world champ" Kell Brook actually had a meaningful fight after yet another woeful mismatch - enough with the oh he needs to be brought back gently after getting macheted while accidentally hanging out with a psychopath @ 3AM in Spain.
Thats 2 world title fights where he's probably been 20 to 1 odds on

Not that we didn't know it before but last night confirmed that frankie gavin has no business competing at welterweight he looked tiny and as per usual a bit flabby.

A good diet plus nutritionist and he could easily do light welter.

Does anybody really want to see him box again at welter?

biggest takeaway of the night (apart from my chicken phall) was that lee selby is a genuine world class fighter, a rare talent who look incredibly comfortable boxing rings around an established champion.

other than that, main event was woeful as expected (worst fight of the night), anthony joshua needs to get in there with someone like stiverne next because he looks way above fringe contender level, mitchell is tough enough for world level but not smart enough to get over the finishing line.

One of them was his mandatory and that was his second defence in two months since a potentially career ending injury. I agree he needs to step it up but you're being a bit unfair there IMO. I think he desperately wants the Khan fight and would jump at the chance of facing Mayweather. Thurman or Maidana I wouldn't mind seeing. Rios would just get battered around and as much as I think he's a tool I don't want to see that.

The Porter win was less than a year ago.

It's too early to go after him for being a bottom-feeding champion.

Frankie looked shy of Kell's power from the off, he's traded on being elusive but Brook was on him straight away. In all honesty he didn't give a good account of himself, he wasn't in there to win - more to pay the mortgage off. There's no point him being at welter, he isn't strong or powerful enough, he needs a division between lightwelterr and welter - he'd do well at 143 :D

Gavin is a victim of the point scoring amateur system. He was never built to be a pro, and has struggled (relatively) since ditching the headguard

Though he's had long enough to adjust, he's had a decent career - British Champ is a high level, I imagine he thought he'd box his way to the top without too much trouble but the pro boxing is a tough thing.

Kell's had plenty of abuse from the haters on here - many used to say that Gavin would beat him but now it's a mismatch.

Selby is a class act and Joshua looks dangerous!!

It is so different.

For most, winning a British is a lifetime achievement. Sadly, ex world amateur champs get judged more harshly, and will likely judge themselves harshly too.

Also the same with Joe Murray.

Gavin can go on to become European champion.

Learned nothing about Brook but I'm a fan and hope he proves how good he is against the elite.

Gutted for Mitchell. Great fight and can hold his head up high. Linares didn't seem too chinny or lacking heart as previously thought.

Selby was an absolute joy to watch. Rated him before but he was even better than expected.

Joshua is a force. I'm not to worried about when he starts getting hit as I have a feeling he's a tough lad. My only worry is his stamina. Surely he can't carry that physique through 12 grueling rounds!?

Great Commonwealth/British scarps.

All in all a thoroughly enjoyable night of boxing.
