Was he very much though about selling his products when you met him. To cut a long story short, I wrote him an e-mail a few years back asking if he would have a phone number of a friend (a healer) of his who he worked alongside (with Sir David Frost) on a cracking show called Beyond Belief. Fair play, he gave me a phone number straight away (not that it did much good in the end) but he was plug plug plug.
I didn't join no fanclub or anything, but it was only this last month or so I stopped get plugging e-mails from him - which I didn't respond to.

Thats good, I lecture (or did until recently) in Sport Psychology and have worked with athletes in helping their mental preperation. I am in the minority with the proffesion, but I do believe in his "powers" and if an athlete came to me and said - do you think I should go and see him, I would (even with my proffesional hat on) say yes.jamie wadman wrote:he was very much for helping peter, he has been with us for 6 weeks, he has made a difference. he didnt plug anything of his. he did show us pics he had with ali when he worked with him. he seems cool and i think our relationship is long term.
As I said, it was great he found the phone number for me the following day - it was a few years since that programme was aired and I didn't expect a response - as he must have thousands of e-mails to read. The guys fame is global.

Uri geller may have some knowledge about sports psychology, but his 'powers' are a compelte crock of shit. He has turned down every single offer to have his powers tested in the laboratory with the weak excuse of 'my powers don't work when I'm tested.'
As for his spoon bending bollocks, there are lots of stage magicians who can do exactly the same thing.
Having said all that, whatever works for someone, it's all good, if Uri can help focus someone focus their mind on the job at hand, excellent. It just fucks me off that the guy has made a career out of talkintg utter bollocks.
And before anyone calls me a skeptic, yes I am, but I happen to believe in telepathy and telekenesis, I did experiments with it myself as a kid and teenager, I just don't believe for a second that Uri Geller has special powers. His ownly power is self publicity and making money for himself.

As I said, whatever works for people. The placebo effect is an EXTREMELY powerful mechanism.
If you believe that someone is from the planet zar, and they give you some of their cosmic dust to boost your strength, then the chances are you will feel and perform better.
Just because they are actually from Romford and they've handed you some hundreds and thousands off of their nan's trifle, is irrelevant.
It's the belief that someone has the ability to make you perform better that's all important.

I'm not sure Geller can take all the blame for an England world cup loss....nickd wrote:I find Geller creepy. I remember he was once on the TV before England played a world cup game in either 1998 or 2002 and asked everyone at home to touch the screen at the same time while chanting some bollocks. I'm sure England lost.
I don't think he has much knowledge on Sport Psychology, from how I have seen him perform on the TV when working with athletes its all back to front to how it is done say be pracitising Sport Psychologists from the Austrailian Insitute of Sport. A sport psychologist wouldn't spend time doing his own session of willing the athlete to well, they would focus on the athlete to get him to peak mental AND physical condition (we are involved in the planning stage of training regime) for an event. I have seen programmes with Uri with a football team and he saying "Score, Score, Score" during a football match and famously was shouting "Miss, Miss, Miss" when Gary McCallister took his penalty vs England. Now if I proposed in a Sport Psychology conference that this was the way forward, I would get kicked out of the building.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Uri geller may have some knowledge about sports psychology, but his 'powers' are a compelte crock of shit. Hard to explain but while the our outcome goals (better performance) might be the same, the way we would go about it would be totally different. I would feel that prior to a match the athlete would probably be less appreciative of the work of a sport psychologist than Uri - with Uri the athlete would think "without Uri I couldn't have done this" whereas with us they actually do most of it but without our subtle advice at the start they might not have tackled the task in the same way.
However, as I said I believe he does have some powers - I don't think it is exclusive to him (and he has said this) far from it. I think the power of will and telepathy that he has is a trait that can be in most people (and maybe why he doesn't want to do lab testing, cause when they confirm it is not exclusive to him, his marquee value will go down). I think it has its uses in sport and looking at some of the athletes performances after working with him, they have improved drastically - and decreased when he left.
While I would say that the things Uri does could be implemented to a similar effect near the end of the training and would certainly not just rely on him (i.e. work with proffesional sport psychologists, nutritionalist, physiologists etc).... I don't think it can do much harm, expect maybe overconfidence - which I would hope the Sport Psychologist would prevent anyway.

The beneficial effects the athelete is getting is from working one on one with Uri. There's a name for this effect, it's basically a phenomena where people's performance improves due to attention they receive which makes them feel special. Uri is devoting his energies to someone at their request and that makes them feel positive, and being positive is obviously a massive boost.stujones wrote:I don't think he has much knowledge on Sport Psychology, from how I have seen him perform on the TV when working with athletes its all back to front to how it is done say be pracitising Sport Psychologists from the Austrailian Insitute of Sport. Stu, you might believe in telepathy, as do I, but if you do, then you must know that it's a hit and miss affair, nobody can do it on demand, no more than anyone can really bend a spoon with the power of their mind over and over again. It's just a con trick, to get him fame and money. What other fornicating purpose is their to bending bloody spoons?
Uri geller is a prize arse.

I published a couple of books with Uri about 8 years ago and it certainly an interesting experience.
He came, with his brother in law, Shippi (sp?) to Frankfurt to launch one of the books and our stand was mobbed. I am uncertain about any "powers" although I do still have a crystal he gave me and a spoon he bent for me, but he certainly does have the gift of the gab. We went to a restaurant for supper and, when we walked in, all the lights blew. He just shrugged and said "this happens to me all the time" opportunism, probably, but it freaked out a lot of people
His house on the Thames is something to behold. Not just because it is huge, but also for the amazing things he has there. A bizarrely heavy golden egg given to him by John Lennon ( which Lennon told Uri aliens gave him ) letters from the CIA requesting his help and, most interestingly, his famous car covered in bent spoons signed by everyone from Elvis to Salvador Dali who gave hime the crystal for the hood ornament/
On top of which, he has a gold plated toilet
Carry on

Slapsie's double post is surely proof of Uri's powers. Slapsie has never done this before and never will again.Slapsie Maxie wrote:oops double post
By the way Slapsie, I can't believe you played the legendary 'Maltese' Joe Barbara at pool. No wonder he mullahed you! Should have got Uri to bend the bastard's cue (he would have still beaten you though).
