Top 50 UK boxing promoters ranked!

Post by Rickywrightmc »

Just stumbled on this, should be a good cause of discussion, what do you all think? By the way it wasnt me who compiled this.

"Criteria include: Existence of a television contract; quality of shows; revenue; profile of promoter; profile of promoters contracted fighters; quality of match-making; size of venues; history of selling out or near selling out venues; frequency of shows; larger influence; history of dealing with sanctioning bodies & new media presence.

I trust this could form some sort of a ‘hit list’ for young professionals in the United Kingdom.

14 and 21 are Father and Daughter.

Several promoters on that list don't hold promoters licenses.

As many of you know, I work for Ricky Hatton so when I saw this was very miffed at only being ranked 28 when other promoters with smaller stables are higher. It appears to be based on who the writer likes rather than any facts.

Lets look at this website's (which I've never heard of) criteria and why it is flawed.

Existence of a television contract: There's only Matchroom that has one, while allegedly is a shareholder of allegedly. Everyone else is in the same boat. Very occasionally other promoters get shows on TV but it usually because they have either paid the production out of their own pockets or they have got a third party to foot the bill, as was the case with Frampton v Avalos on ITV.

Quality of shows: Subjective

Revenue: Impossible for the writer of the article to gauge. Even looking at accounts online does not tell the picture as many promoters operate through parent companies and subsidiaries.

Profile of promoter: Again subjective, but how someone with a huge profile like Ricky Hatton can be ranked as low as 28 makes this laughable.

Profile of promoter’s contracted fighters: Again subjective. However, again Ricky Hatton at 28 has to be brought up as he currently has three boxers ranked in the top five in the world with the either the WBC or WBA, including one who is a mandatory challenger.

Quality of match-making: Incredibly subjective.

Size of venues: With the exception of Matchroom shows and a handful of Warren ones, most promoters are staging shows at venues of very similar sizes. This being in the criteria is silly because it gives a leg up to promoters who book bigger venues and stage shows that are full of empty seats.

History of selling out or near selling out venues: How does the writer know what was a sell out and what wasn't? Did he go to every show and count every single person walking in with a paid ticket. As above, just because the venue may be bigger does not mean it was full. Also, some promoters give away a lot of comps when sales are low, while others need revenue from every ticket.

Frequency of shows: Fair point

Larger influence: Subjective. And again, Ricky Hatton at 28 when he's probably the most famous man in British boxing.

History of dealing with sanctioning bodies: How does the writer know what dealings the promoters have? Also, Ricky at 28 when he has three top five boxers with the WBC and WBA, and has had other boxers in world title fights in the past.

New media presence: This is the one that really got me. Some of the promoters on the list do not even have their own Facebook, Twitter and YouTube pages, but they rank higher than Hatton Promotions which has the biggest Facebook page in British boxing at 111,000 likes, while Ricky himself has 442,000 Twitter followers.

Also, there is at least two people on that list that do not hold BBBofC licences.

Surely Nisse Sauerland should be top 2, or are we to ignore all shows that take place outside the UK?

Agree with the entire post above.... other than that some dont hold bbboc license, that doesnt matter, it wasnt restricted to bbboc, no reason mbc promoters cant be on there.

A Top 25 would have made much more sense, they were clearly struggling with 50.

The list can only be judged as someone's opinion.

Is the list for 2015, 14 or based on the last 5 years? If so a few would have to subtracted from the list. Also listing multiple persons from the same promotional organisations again is a negative factor of its validity.

In my opinion the list should be based on promoter profile, number of shows within 12 month period including fights on the bill, Total number of Shows, number of championship shows, number of champions developed within past 5 years, length of time established. This would assist in setting an accurate criteria for the list, which if compiled correctly would be a great reference point.

My top 10 list would be

1. Matchroom (Barry and Eddie Hearn)
2. allegedly Promotions
3. Dennis Hobson
4. Kellie (Frank) Maloney
5. Steve Wood VIP
6. Ricky Hatton
7. Mick Hennesy
8. Barry McGuigan
9. Micky Helliet
10. Carl Greaves

I would have Dave Coldwell in my top ten as he has in his short period in promoting built a great public profile and delivered some great shows, however some of those shows were alongside Matchroom so I take this into account.

As I have worked with a few of the top ten over the past few years I have also based my list on internal structure, staffing and investment.

This thread does start a great challenge for promoters to up their game and challenge for top ten positions. This will undoubtedly help to maximise quality and frequency of UK shows with far better audience entertainment value.

My forecast for next year would be to see Dennis Hobson in number 2 spot, Steve Wood taking 4th and a big leap from Barry McGuigan.
I would like to see David Coldwell in the top ten as I like his attitude to boxing promotion.

Oh and of course I would love to put myself in there ;)

Completely off subject but what the, deal with Lucas Browne and Hatton? He does not seem to be too happy at The moment especially when apparently he not even in line to fight for the belt next as fres oquendo has been made mandatory.

There are some great guys out there at the minute and a lot of people discount the role of the small hall promoters.

I've the utmost respect for promoters Glyn Rhodes, Stefy Bull, Carl Greaves etc who are supporting their own fighters because they do it for the development of their own, like an extended family of sorts.

It's exciting to see the guys who are starting out with bigger ambitions like Marcus AH, getting regular shows in big cities in the Midlands which have been dry of shows in recent years.

Promoters like Marcus Anderson Hitchen are boxing people, working in the past and present with Dennis Hobson etc in a silent role of sorts, making things happen behind the scenes.

I'd love to see Marcus get the opportunity to showcase on a bigger stage, because they come to the sport with ambition, which rarely seems to see the light unless you've already got the backing of high profile TV.

It's the workers, the grafters, the ones with ambition, just like the fighters...they're the future, not the have 6 shows a month guys with no drive.

Just an opinion guys. No intention to direct towards anyone or insult.

Thanks.

Oquendo is not a mandatory. Chagaev was granted permission to first fight Pianeta on the basis that they paid Lucas step aside money. The Oquendo thing has come because he started legal action in the US. The WBA have not stated that they will grant a Chagaev v Oquendo rematch at this stage, the only reference to that was made in a press release issued by Oquendo and Chagaev's people.

Our representatives are speaking with the WBA to clarify the situation. More news next week.

Legal action in the US that has no authority in Panama, where the WBA is based, Australia, Russia or the UK. What a waste of money.
