Getting up from a count too early

Post by roy »

Barry Jones is always saying it and Paul Smith said it about Hibbert on Saturday, but can you get up from a count too early? Of course ,if your legs won't support you and you fall over then it's obviously too early. But, is there any evidence that your head clears any quicker kneeling than standing? In the old days, when the bout resumed as soon as you got up, then obviously it was wise to take a longer count. Since the introduction of a mandatory 8 count, however, I can't see any advantage in staying on the canvas, or am I missing something?

Good question, I've been wondering this.

Perhaps if you stay down for the count of eight and then get up you might gain an extra second or two by the time the ref checks your balance.

Yeah maybe it's just a balance thing and taking the extra seconds on your knee to compose yourself.

But,even if you've been standing for a few seconds, the ref still goes through the motions of wiping the gloves, etc after the 8 count.

Yeah, it's this I would say no point jumping up, you might as well take the count for a few more seconds, I think he just showed a bit of a of inexperience in getting decked and jumping up straight after?

Linares on Saturday was a good example of how to get up. Took his time, composed himself, didn't let Mitchell see him wobbling around on unsteady legs.

Larry Holmes used to get up and walk around the ring, using the ropes to hold on to. Think that walking helped clear his head, and this is a guy that got up from this.

I would say its definitely better to give yourself a few seconds to compose yourself,if you fall or stumble after 8 seconds then surely you would've beeen worse after only 3 secs

Britain was one of the last to bring in the standing 8 count, and sometimes you'd see an international boxer here get knocked down, jump up expect the 8 count, but then look a bit shocked as the ref waved the boxer back in

this is a great little thread and similar to one I was going to do about boxers not utilising the 'take a knee for an 8' facility that it available for everyone when you are in dire straits.

The risk with the 'take a knee' approach is that it's used so rarely - I reckon a fair number of British refs would just assume the boxer was quitting & would end up waving off the fight immediately.
