*edit* grr. that was acelino freitas' nephew, vitor, but a good step up for him.
acelino is scheduled to come back out of retirement next week, so i was
writing about him below...

acelino's opponent oliveira was originally from sao paolo but moved to miami with his
parents and started boxing here. he was basically being fed club fighters here but being
sold to the brazilian press and fans to be the next freitas, even winning an award down
there which freitas didn't appreciate, so freitas came out of 5 years of retirement and jumped
3 divisions to knock out oliveira, then retired again. freitas also served in the bahia state
legislature a while. oliveira came back to beat a few more national/international level
guys and then lost again in florida. oliveira hadn't fought in a while but was making excuses
about the freitas fight, so freitas is coming back out of retirement at probably about 40 by
now to fight him again in oliveira's home town. i'm not sure why it is worth his time
but freitas obviously isn't worried about losing to that guy. nobody should be billed
as "the next" [insert elite world class fighter name here] until they have beaten at least
a legit contender, but as far as rookie pros go i would keep an eye on lopes, another
baiano. hard to believe in this era, but after freitas unified the wbo and wba 130lb titles
by beating casamayor, freitas turned down a mayweather fight, prefering to defend them
against lesser guys and then unsuccessfully try to unify the wbo and wba again at 135.
