English title chance and home advantage for boxer Adam Little

Kirkham’s Adam Little will have home advantage when he takes on Sunderland’s Lee Mould for the English welterweight title at the Hilton Hotel in Blackpool later this month.

A battle of rising stars, the contest, on Saturday 27 June, appears to be a real ‘trade’ fight. Both boxers are unbeaten, Mould having eight wins and a draw from his nine professional contests, while Adam enjoys an unblemished record of 12 wins from 12 fights since he first turned over with Ricky Hatton in 2011. Mould also won the Northern Area title in his last fight in November while Adam won the Central Area strap on his latest outing, also at the Hilton Hotel, in December. Both these victories were also the first time either had gone 10 rounds.

Now managed by Neil Marsh and trained by former scouse boxing star Alan Levene, the 24 year old, former Kirkham and Northside ABC boxer said: “The fight was originally scheduled as a defence of the Central Area belt I won last year but Neil has managed to get me a shot at the English. I’m made up with my progress over the past year or so. With Neil I’ve fought for, and won, my first title, and now I’m fighting for an even bigger and better belt. Once I’ve won this I’m really in the mix for a shot at the British title. I’d love to bring a Lonsdale belt back to Kirkham.”

Previous winners of the English welterweight title include the likes of Bradley Skeete, Lee Purdy and Michael Jennings – who all went on to challenge for domestic, European and even world honours after winning the belt. Adam’s trainer, Alan Levene, sees nothing to stop Adam from joining them at the top level. He said: “Adam is a joy to train. He listens and takes on board what you tell him. He also gets excellent sparring, particularly at the Everton Red Triangle gym in Liverpool. They have a number of champions there, at British and European level, and are one of the best gyms in the country at the moment. Adam has a great chance to win the belt in front of his own fans here and although we’re not looking past Mould, who is a good fighter, a win would mean, with Neil’s help, that we can start to seriously look at that Lonsdale belt.”

The contest is as evenly balanced as they come and promises to be the highlight of an intriguing night that also sees two world–rated Russian stars making their debuts in an English ring. Middleweight Andrey Meryasev and welterweight David Avanesyan , both ranked in the world’s top 15, have recently signed with Marsh, who promises the night could see something special. He said: “My last show here was a great success but, with the English title for Adam and the addition of Andrey and David, I think fans could be in for a real treat. Both Russians are at European level now and I believe they can go much further. It could be a special night when you get to see future British and world champions in action.”

He couldn't commit to travelling from Blackpool every day to train and wanted to go with someone local to him.

No issue, he still comes to Ricky's gym to spar every so often.

I may be wrong, but this sounds like a bit of a Bellew/Arnie type answer - as long as both parties stick to the same line we will never know any different.

Before I take on a job I usually check the map to see how far it is from my house, it prevents any surprises !

Yeah I agree. You know what you signed up for in advance. Put it this way- you travel 60 mins each way a day to a gym and that trainer will get you to world level, or you travel 10 mins down the road to one who gets you to domestic level?

I am not saying that's the case here. But if you start training somewhere the travel was fine for you once upon a time so you've either lost that hunger to sacrifice or something's gone wrong
