Steve Collins v Gerald McClellan
Steve Collins v Gerald McClellan
Having just re-watched Collins v Benn 1 & 2 I was wondering how Colllins v The G-Man would have gone?.......

interesting match up. I really cant call it. could well be a rerun of the Benn clash with The G Man taking early rounds and Collins covering up and taking the G'ster late on, similar to Benn. I just dont think Collins would have been knocked out.
Re: Steve Collins v Gerald McClellan
remember collins fought benn after his battle with McClellan, benn simply had nothing left,i don`t think Collins would have coped with a prime McClellan,he`d have been stopped after a battering, though not knocked out,as much as I admired benn,he was lucky to have an incompetent ref when he was knocked through the ropes in the gman fight,im`e of the opinion Collins was lucky to have caught benn and eubank when they were spent, and he lost the first fight to eubank imo,he is to be admired though after changing his style and coming back stronger after the mccallum fight
Re: Steve Collins v Gerald McClellan
KO1 McChellan, in devastating fashion with Collins walking straight onto a massive bomb from the huge puncher that is McChellan!
Re: Steve Collins v Gerald McClellan
McClellan early stoppage for me. Benn wasnt the same man when he fought collins. Ive got collins a slight step down from benn and eubank whom he fought at the end of their careers.

Collins was as tough as they come but he would have been stopped in this one. Maybe on his feet late, too brave by half.
The really interesting fights I wanted to see Gman in would have been McClellan/McCallum or McClellan/Eubank.

Always been a fan of Collins who was a tough, tough guy both mentally and physically.
And he was also smart and organised with it; saw him on that great Sky round table with the other champs like Jones, Eubank and Calzaghe and he came across as very bright guy and knowing exactly what he was doing career-wise.
Knew his limitations but also always had a plan for a fight and prepared meticulously. There was more to Steve than he's often credited for.
He'd have been acutely aware how dangerous the G-Man was, especially early, and just found a way to negate and frustrate that.....yes he was a brave guy, but not foolhardy.
I don't see Steve winning but I definitely do think he makes the final bell and the G-Man gets a few difficult rounds as well.

I just dont think there was any comparison in spirit between the benn who fought mclellan and the world champ benn and the guy who quit and ripped off the fans in two collins fights.i was there live for both.they were dead even fights and benn was fighting well in both ,the first he claimed an ankle injury, the second was an outright no mas.mimmy123 wrote:interesting match up. He was worn out from so many hard fights and took the last collins match for another million pound plus payday.
Its understandable the physical beatings he took in the mclellan and second malinga fight and the reserves of courage he had had to draw on.plus people forget after the mclellan fight he took another two world title fights within 5 months

I would agree on all counts.cfang wrote:McClellan early stoppage for me. Benn wasnt the same man when he fought collins. Ive got collins a slight step down from benn and eubank whom he fought at the end of their careers.
Eubank (a shadow of the man at his best) beat Collins in their first fight, for me.
Re: Steve Collins v Gerald McClellan
Collins out toughs him, outlasts him and grind him down for a late TKO victory.

Re: Steve Collins v Gerald McClellan
As already said the benn that fought Collins was nowhere near the fighter that beat G-man . I can't see Collins winning or even going the distance he may have a very good chin but he's so easy to hit . he would of been all busted up and swollen and stopped by the 9th . Although I think it's more likely he is stopped by the 4th after visiting the canvas more than 4 or 5 times during the course of the fight .
Re: Steve Collins v Gerald McClellan
G man a level above Collins and wins inside 5 rounds.
