He can't sell this fight on his own. It will have to be 'stacked' again.

Buying isn't helping

Oh dear, PPV is here to stay. Feel DeGale will be PPV going forward too featuring the likes of Selby, McDonnell and Quigg in "stacked" world title cards.

Maybe there is truth in what Fr&nk allegedly said in his column last week "After splashing put bundles on Premier League football the word is that Sky plan to recoup revenue by having pay-per-view boxing every eight weeks."

Not unrealistic. That's roughly 6 PPV's per year, tying up the top names, which will leave Saturday Fight Night on SKY Sports free to showcase "Matchroom the Next Generation".

Meh...tbh I'm past caring about Sky PPV now, am just resigned to the fact that it's here to stay on a regular basis & I'll be cancelling Sky Sports as soon as my deal comes to an end. It's a rip-off for boxing fans, and I don't particularly fancy bankrolling the football or F1 anymore.

To justify these ppv's, they have to match hard on a regular basis and then make the fighters earn their keep. I don't want to see fighters like kevin mitchell scrape by on poor fights then get a random shot at a title. They need to take on world class opponents to earn their shot on ppv support to get my cash

I don't mind paying extra for PPV every now and then if the cards are as good as the last one we had but it looks as though Hearn and Sky are going to be trying to feed us crap probably 4 times a year now. I love Brook as a fighter and I said from very early he would be world champ but he is nowhere near a PPV name on his own and Hearn should clam up!

i can understand why fwank twists the knife by telling us its ppv on sky every 8 weeks but his own channel is putting out less and less primetime boxing. it's now a live show in the evening every few weeks. the overseas middle of the night stuff is just awesome but i would like to see more primetime shows too. sometimes i think its because of the cost of televising these shows, and sometimes i think its because his stable is bare. what he's done - creating a tv channel from scratch - is incredible and i've been a subscriber since day one but i would like to see more live shows on a friday/sat night UK time. at the rate its going basically BN and Sky are going to have roughly the same amount of live UK shows a year, and we'll be paying twelve quid a month to BN and PPV costs to Sky every other month. It sucks.

fornicate sky i hope they go bust. Boxing fans are picking up the tab for overpriced EPL and F1 contracts while fans of those sports watch on regular subscription. If's not even as though the profits are being reinvested in making boxing mainstream or developing production etc. Your ppv money is finding it's way into wayne rooneys £15m salary. Anyone who buys another ppv is a mug.

People keep dipping into their pockets so by that regard this is correct these guys are PPV fighters by the current standard & I've got no sympathy for anyone who keeps buying these poor Sky sports cards repackaged as PPV's.

Interesting that Bellew vs Cleverly 2 did more buys than the Brook vs Gavin bill. Surely Brook is only a ppv star if he fights big names like Mayweather, Pacquiao or Marquez.

I think people could accept Brook Mayweather being PPV but Brook Rios alone is nowhere near. Real shame that this is the way things are going. We have a lot of talent in this country (most at Matchroom) and if they reach their potential, they'll be taken off regular Sky and put on PPV without hesitation.

Ever thought that the less sales was due to customers bad experience with the Bellew Cleverly fight ? Numbers will continue to diminish what ever is on. The viewers now realise they're being mugged and will watch it delayed for free.

Makes me laugh though when you read other threads proclaiming Eddie Hearn as the messiah ......... he's just signed his long term deal with Sky so he condones their actions. Don't just blame Sky.

The only way they make PPV a success is if they are evenly matched, top cards. Something I don't think will happen often. The O2 card was a good one, the froch groves 2 was a good card but bellew cleverly was poor.

Also if they want to make people buy, you have to tease them with 24/7 type shows they do for big fights in America. Get people talking about fights.

If brook v rios is made, expect it to bei London in September with Joshua v whyte on the card. Sky are building it up. This week about 4/5 articles on whyte v aj

I tend to pay for all of the domestic PPV ones, but not so many of the US PPV ones. However I would like to see genuine spine tingling buzzing 50/50, 60/40's or similar as the showcase main event fight. For me the Rule Britannia Card having as Headline contest what most judges on here correctly called a miss-match didn't get me too excited, certainly not like Froch vs Groves. Brook was 1/8 with bookmakers and won accordingly. On flip side the Rule Britannia card started at 5pm and the fights on the undercard were very entertaining. What you going to do eh?!

I much prefer cards stacked with good names in 50/50 fights. But to attract the so called casuals, you need the huge stars / true grudge matches and they are few and far between.

Yep this was surely a factor. A few of the casuals in my work bought the Bellew vs Cleverly PPV & all said straight afterwards that they wouldn't be making that mistake again. True to form, none of them bought the Brook v Gavin PPV.

Buncey has been saying for a while that the new sky deal was for 8 ppvs per year.

The rule Britannia card was decent but 8 ppvs per year is going to take some creative work from Hearn. Only so much the public will take.

Joshua will be headlining late this year early next im sure and will be centered around him, brook and Degale.

How many Ppvs were there last year?

I usually buy the PPVs but I cancelled Sky Sports months ago and have genuinely never regretted it since.

On the rare occasion something specific crops up on Sky, like a half decent Saturday night boxing event, I'll use Now TV for a £6.99 day pass.

Overall this lets me see all the boxing I want for far less than just maintaining a Sky Sports monthly (£25.50) subscription.

Sky Sports = £306 per year + PPVs on top.

4 standalone PPVs + e.g. 4 day passes = circa. £100 per year.

Worth doing if, like me, you don't watch PL football, darts or some other shit.

Just cancel Sky Sports! Its a rort.

IF this fight happens I'm not sure there will be money to make an undercard like the O2 show the other week.

Rios will cost loads to bring over.

To put into perspective his three last purses in GBP were £550,000 ( Alvarado) £594,000 (Chaves) £2,500,000 (Pacquaio)

Now for Rios to comeover to another country in his opponents home town you will be looking at £650,000 minimum. Then you have Brooks purse. Will he be paid less ? Don't know how much his highest purse is but doubt it is what Rios has made.

The point is with the purses of the main event I can't see an undercard being that good. Personally think Brook wins the fight easily and could stop him late.

They are big figures to justify for someone who isn't going to appeal to casual fans. Brook won't sell on his reputation alone so i think this should be a card that they accept a loss on to put brook over and cash in against a big name next time.

what do i know though, I'm not a millionaire and have never promoted a fight in my life (bar a couple on the school playing fields many moons back!)

its not the boxer who makes the ppv. but its a dangerous sport, your next fight could be your last cant blame them for wanting to make as much as they can. and is not like the gavin fight or rios are stiffs, if he is not on his game he could lose or be ko by rios, i wont buy it unless it has a good under card.
