It's official: Lacy and Calwhoee will fight for the number 2
... spot in the super-middlweight division. As the number 1 is obviously WBA champion MIKKEL "the great Dane" KESSLER.
Or is it only the number 3 spot? After all, there is also Markus Beyer who was much more cinvincing against Sheika than Lacy, and in Danny Green has defated a much better fighter than anyone Lacy or Calzaghe have ever faced (yes, 50something Chris Eubank WAS poorer competition than prime Green).

What has Danny Green ever achieved to make him 'better than anyone Calzaghe or lacy have faced?"pundit wrote:... spot in the super-middlweight division. As the number 1 is obviously WBA champion MIKKEL "the great Dane" KESSLER.

Calzaghe's reign hasn't been exemplary, but he's still got a better resume than either Kessler, Beyer or Lacy. The only guy who had a better ledger was Ottke.
Calzaghe whacked out Sheika with ease, he stopped Mitchell and beat Charles Brewer.
Lucas is an impressive name, but how much did he really have left in the tank. Beyer has looked vulnerable for some time now, as his loss to Sanavia and shaky performance against Green in the 1st showed.
I'd be willing to bet that even now Calzaghe would beat Green handily, Kessler might be another story.
Kessler looks solid and improving, but he has some way to overhaul Calzaghe, I would have Calzaghe number 1, Kessler number 2, and Lacy third with Beyer just behind.
The winner of Calzaghe v Lacy is the top dog, there should be a fight made with Kessler for the winner to settle this once and for all.

Yes, Kessler is looking more and more like he could be the real deal. He has a jackhammer jab and enough power to be more than a jab and clutch merchant. Reading maxboxing today, the guys who have been sparring with Kessler from the states said his jab is 'frightening.' For a fellow fighter to say that, you know that it must be something special.
In a way I hope that Lacy wins the upcoming fight, because I think there's a better chance of making Lacy v Kessler than Calzaghe v Kessler. Calzaghe will probably move up in weight if and when he beats Lacy, claiming there are no fights left at SM, and will look for a scrap with Woods who he thinks he can beat.
Lacy however probably is more interested in proving himself the top dog, and will go for Kessler.
It's nothing personal against Joe, I just want to see the SM division consolidated for once.

I totally agree, Kessler has a good left hook too. Your points on Calzaghe i feel are spot on, if Lacy were to win i see him far more likely to look for Kessler (who i think would travel to the US) and/or Beyer who i doubt will fight any of the other champions and is probably closer to retiring than much else.
Larsen WAS very good - but it won't do him or us any good as he's probably never gonna get another pro-fight. He's been fucked over big time by Team Palle and to some extend his own pride and stubbornness.stujones wrote:I'm still not convinced that Kessler is the best Super Middleweight in Denmark.... and I'm not talking about Rudy Markussen.
Thats not to say I don't rate Kessler, but I do rate Larsen.
Having said that, Kessler was for years, before all that shit happened, considered the better talent by those who knew both of them well.
After Kessler had won the belt (and Larsen's dispute with Palle had begun) - He was offered to fight Kessler by Team Palle. Now he probably wouldn't have been paid much - but it was at least a chance to get the title and redeem himself.
Well Larsen declined - a good guess being that he didn't rate his chances against Kessler. Could be other reasons playing part though. (legal stuff - think he's still got something going vs. Team Palle)
In fiarness to Calzaghe if he beats Lacy then a move to LH would be a good thing.
People can't slag Joe off for NOT moving up then slag him off for doing exactly that. If he beats Lacy , Kessler apart there is nothing left.
Fights against Woods, Tarver, Briggs, Erdei, Adamcezk would prove more than a fight against Kessler.
Listen Joe has been champion for a number of years - let the likes of kessler chase him, if he beats Lacy then let Kessler move up to LH to fight him - I doubt the biaised writers on here would cally Kessler half the names joe has had to put up with.
The more I talk about Joe the more I look forward to March 4th where I will be there to hopefully watch Joe KO Lacy, I think he does late on. Lacy looks impressive but to me he has beaten nothing, problems with Sheika, a faded Reid, Scott Pemberton (who people scoffed at when put up as challenger to Calzaghe) - tell me who has Lacy beaten to get everyone all orgasmic about him??
Joe's resume is not perfect but is better than Lacy's - I could be wrong and will the first to hold my hands up if I am but in my mind Joe beats Lacy easier than people think

You make some fair points, and nothing others haven't said.
Joe does indeed have a better resume than Lacy, but then he's been fighting a hell of a lot longer.
What impressed about Lacy is his hunger, he seems to want to prove a point. Calzaghe has been content to fight mandatories and WBO dregs for a long time, and since beating Eubank, his best wins were over faded Mitchell and Brewer and a close one over Reid.
The Calzaghe of a couple of years ago would have beaten Lacy with ease, now I'm not so sure. With his bad hands he could have big problems if they go against Lacy, as boxing Lacy to a standstill won't be easy.
Reid may have been faded, but Lacy really did a number on him he had Robin's eyes rolling back in his head with the last knockdown, and Reid has a cast iron chin.
It's a great fight this, and if Calzaghe wins in impressive fashion, it will enhance his legacy no end.
My problem with Calzaghe moving up, is that I think his legacy would be far better if he were to clean out SM completely. I know he struggles to make weight, but he's hardly alone there, seems like half the champs in boxing do. He's almost certain to go for Clinton Woods as he sees Clinton as a soft touch, I'd rather see him fight Kessler or Beyer, I'm certain he'd beat Beyer, not so sure about Kessler.

Beyer!!!!!!!!! - To me this would prove a thing, Glen Catley KO'd Brewer years ago and Beyer was in the shit against a guy (Green) who in effect is a novice with a punch.
I agree with your points about the Joe of 2 years ago, is joe faded??
Maybe, but i think sometimes people let personal feelings about a fighter cloud there judgement (maybe I do to). For example I read on here before Veit II that Joe had been caught etc etc and looked in danger!!
Bollocks - he whipped Veit for 6 rounds and won easily.
Yes Joe has fought too many bums, yes he is injured too much but some of the stuff written on here is terrible.
Lacy v Reid - come on Robin has been on the slide since the Branco fight, Lacy to me proved nothing in that fight only that he is strong and can punch, so was Charles Brewer, so was Chris Eubank, so was Byron Mitchell
Anyway I am ranting now lol!!!
Roll on March 4th I will be there anyone else going may be up for a few beers????

When a fighter hasn't faced a live opponent for quite a while, and is getting decked by the likes of Kabary Salem, it suggests they are on the slide to me. Of course, Joe isn't shot, and nowhere near it, but he hasn't fought anyone as young, hungry, determined and heavy hitting as Lacy, arguably in his entire career. Eubank was weight drained, Brewer and Mitchell were nearer the end than the beginning. Reid was more of a counterpuncher with a dig than a banger like Lacy.Wrists wrote:Beyer!!!!!!!!! - To me this would prove a thing, Glen Catley KO'd Brewer years ago and Beyer was in the shit against a guy (Green) who in effect is a novice with a punch.

Yes Lacy isn't a proven commodity, but neither was Hatton when he got in with Tszyu, and like Tszyu Calzaghe has been less active towards the end of his career, and hasn't faced a young hungry fighter for a while.
Im still not convinced about him, when he fought Mundine the few times Mundine actually attacked Kessler looked very akward in defence, He looked good going forward and jabbing but if he fights a big puncher like green or Lacy he may be in big trouble.steve689 wrote:I have said all along that Kessler will emerge as the best of the bunch and i stick by it, he would take Beyer and beat Green IMO and has already beaten Mundine which is a good scalp for my money especially in Oz. I think he would give both Calzaghe and Lacy a right handful

And cause he knows Calzaghe is the king.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Reid is saying that because he's embarrassed about getting tumbled to canvas and wants joe to beat him up.
All hail King Calzaghe. :P
Yeah and after Salem he came back to easily own Veit again to show that was just a one off bad night and fluke. When a fighter hasn't faced a live opponent for quite a while, and is getting decked by the likes of Kabary Salem, it suggests they are on the slide to me. I don't buy the young hungry and determined excuse till they fight in the ring. It's not like were he's been decked and got up so many times to show it.
Joe showed determination when Mitchell thought he could trade.

He had no business getting decked by Salem in the first place, and since when was Mario Veit a benchmark for greatness?Max Molyneux wrote:And cause he knows Calzaghe is the king.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Reid is saying that because he's embarrassed about getting tumbled to canvas and wants joe to beat him up.

so what Lacy has to be decked to show he is determined, what bollocks....so I guess any fighter who hasn't been decked hasn't shown determination.
Sure. Joe showed determination against Mitchell, and he did well to rally like that, but he also showed a total lack of defence and caution, and If Mitchell can deck him with a wild hook, don't you reckon lacy has a chance? If he tries standing and trading with his arms flailing away against Lacy, I don't think there will be a favourable outcome for Joe.
I don't know who is going to win, but I know that Lacy has a chance.

Anyone can be decked by a bad fighter by a fluke or a bad night and thats what happened with Salem.
Wasn't saying Veit was a benchmark for greatness but he ain't that bad and only Joe has stopped him.
Since when is Lacy a better trader? Lacy recklessy leaves his chin open and he can't walk through everybodys shots and his chin needs testing.

It's not just that he hasn't decked but none his opponents hasn't given him enough of a fight to show that.so what Lacy has to be decked to show he is determined, what bollocks....so I guess any fighter who hasn't been decked hasn't shown determination.
Yeah Lacy has a punchers fluke chance but he could also pay for it like Mitchell. Nothing wrong with a fighter that shows caution as Mitchell could hit and he looked too mad to show defence and decided to brawl.Sure. Especially given that Lacy already owns a more pretigious belt than Joe in the IBF.
Calzaghe hasn't shown any great inclination to ever prove beyond doubt he was the best. Aside from Otttke there have been countless other fighters he could have faced, but he was content to face WBogus challengers instead.
If he beats Lacy, I will give him his props, he will have earnt them, and that's all i've ever wanted to see Calzaghe do.
