DURAN AT MIDDLEWEIGHT

Post by misterpunch »

how do we rate RD at middleweight? for me he's probably the best lightweight ever, was a great welter but didn't really impress at middle. the barkley win being the highpoint - some might argue but I reckon minter would have beaten him fairly comfortably.

Duran and minter's relative showings against Hagler give you an idea of their levels. I'd take the Duran who fought Hagler to beat any version of Alan minter. Minter was a good fighter but I cant see him hurting Duran and I can see Duran outworking and outpointing Minter.

I would agree, and I don't think Minter's style exactly works in his favor vs Duran.

Duran would have torn Alan Minter up at any weight.

the minter that boxed vito's ears off would have done the same to duran - on the back foot with accurate jab to the advancing duran. then real aggression when RD begins to feel the sting of those punches. as long as he stays uncut, minter wins

Why does outboxing Vito mean that someone can outbox Roberto Duran?

The whole idea that "the Minter that boxed Vito's ears off would have done the same to Duran". Is something I've never even considered before this day. And for good reason.

totally different. in the hagler/duran fight marvin fought like an idiot for 3 or 4 rounds - yet still won them. he was far too intent on coming forward whenever he saw a chance. consequently duran tagged him time and time again. when marvin held his natural aggression in check he rarely got hit. minter would not be so cavalier. he would catch duran coming in. minter had a top jab incorporated into a style that was difficult for duran type guys to break down. plus, in most of his middleweight fights duran looked ordinary.

Duran would struggle against any of the top Middleweights in history. He's just too small.

If he was a great welter, why did he just quit in the middle of a world title fight?

true - and after beating the guy in their first fight! what went on in the head of a proud warrior like duran is something i'll never fathom. I said he was a great welter but I implied that this greatness diminished as he went up the weights - which is fairly obvious

I know, that's why he shouldn't be called a proud warrior IMO.

What would you call him? I mean, he fought like a warrior in many other battles....

Hundreds of boxers fought like warriors and didn't quit in mid fight with nothing wrong with them. Leonard showed more guts that Duran.

Very good. What would you call him then? If not a proud warrior?

Well the quitting only happened once, and then he sacrificed himself to Hearns to show he was willing to be knocked out.

Anyway, I think he was about to perform a public crap, on "quit" night. So with no more than one performance of that nature under his belt, in a fight that he was remaining pretty competitive in, I'm thinking it's not enough evidence to call him a coward. In fact the evidence weighs very heavily to the opposite.

Just sayin'.

And yet Hagler, the best or second best middle in history, struggled against him!

Duran looked more than big enough against the enormous Barkley.
