If you had the money....

Post by TopGun »

Odds for Andre Ward to beat Paul Smith are 1/33. Now the odds are terrible but this is a near enough certainty that will come off.

If you had a significant amount of money, say 100k, you would make £3,030. A hell of a lot to lose I know, but surely this is the easiest and safest cash you could ever make? Would you do it?

No way, on any bet you have to way up risk vs reward and there is hardly any reward for such a huge outlay. Also those odds are crazy in a two horse race, Ward could get cut etc. Last year someone put hundreds of thousands of pounds in play on a game where a team was winning 3-0 inorder to win a couple if grand, it ended I a draw.

the odds would only become good value at around the 1/10 mark. Anyway the best price on Ward is 1/25

No chance. That kind of bet would be completely ridiculous, unless you were so rich that losing 100k would mean nothing to you (in which case there'd be no incentive to win 3k anyway).

Not worth the risk. Anything could happen such a clash of heads leading to TD or low blow causing a DQ.

For odds like that you are better looking at lower division football or tennis.

This is probably the biggest certainty in top level boxing I've seen in a long time but it'd be a horrible experience given that one hail mary punch can just end a fight. You'd constantly be on tenterhooks!

Only an idiot would risk 100k for 3k as already said anything could happen plus ward has been off a long time

No, those are terrible odds even for a fight as one sided as that.

Ward could get stopped on a cut, he could put his shoulder out, lots of things could happen.

Alternative view, 3% return over 36 minutes is a fantastic return and that would take nearly a year in a bank. Few things to consider:

1) Smith doesn't have the one power punch to win
2) Clash of heads - Smith will be behind on the cards and the ref would take it that way given the money behind Ward.
3) Ward is the home fighter and will get the benefit of the doubt if it goes to the cards.
4) Smith is a domestic middleweight level fighter who can compete (not win) on a euro platform. Ward is the best smw in the world.
5) Ward will never be dq'd

All in all, it's a sound investment as i do not see anyway Smith can win.

Ps. I don't have £100k to bet on this. Probably due to silly betting!

Nobodies seen Ward fight for a while, its still never gonna happen for Smith but for once in his career, hes not the ring rusty fighter going into a fight

Smith has good power which is just as well coz he's only got a punchers chance really,Paul just has to make it ugly,Ward's a dirty fighter himself sometimes so that limits Smith's chances even more

I doubt Ward will lose a round and bringing the extra weight I imagine he stops Smith in about 9

An old mate of mine used to bet dead certs to subsidise his student grant. He bet all the money he had, except for £30 in his jacket, on Roy Jones to beat Montel Griffin. When Roy lost, he couldn't afford to eat, so her bought a few hundred tins of very out of date hot dogs. He lived on pretty much nothing except the hot dogs for six weeks before being rushed to hospital, with the first case of scurvy in Stoke for over a hundred years.

Chudinov is 3/10 to beat Buglione.
I'd rather stick 10k on to win 3k
Buglione has zero chance

Andre Ward is clearly technically superior.

However Paul Smith spent the last year preparing for two world title fights, in which he fought credibly, whilst Ward his been picking his ar*e for the best part of two years.

If there's any money going on this, I'd say a tenner on Smith for the upset.

I am with you Declan.....Paul has proved he belongs at the top table and Ward must be halfway to qualifying for a law degree via correspondence with all the Goossen squabbles/wrangles and I think he'll be a wee bit rusty.

But unless Andre has been secretly living off Taco Bell and Jim Beam....very unlikely for a devout, clean-living SOG....then he'll almost certainly win it after a few ropey rounds. I'd put a tenner on Paul because he's a good lad, I'd love him to win and also because I can afford to punt a tenner.

I think Ward would handle smith comfortably enough after a big dinner and a couple of pints.

As long as he foregoes the post-prandial cigar, anyway.

 You're probably right, even if Ward turns up in his smoking jacket....although I'd love Paul to land the shot of a lifetime with a tenner firmly attached to this Hail Mary shot!

Not a hope in hell of Smith winning this fight, even with that in mind i still would not risk 100k to win 3k.

Just taken a look at the odds on offer for this fight, you can get 4/7 for Ward to win by KO, i'd be far more tempted to stick my 100k on that.

I think if you are that rich that you'd bet 100k to win just 3k... Then you probably wouldn't bother as £3k meant so little to you.

Apart from lottery winners and rags-to-riches Russian/Arab oil dealers, most rich people are frugal and careful with their wealth. So wouldn't risk it.
