Eubank v Thompson 1

Post by Mimmy »

Just watching this fight while converting it. Why did Eubank let Thompson win? Eubank could have ended the fight at least 2 times in different rounds but refused to finish the job. What was his problem?

You say Chris could have finished him but you have to remember it was Carl Thompson he was in with. Maybe he was just being cautious and with Thompson's track record, you couldn't blame him.

Eubank killed a man not long after the second Watson fight. Those two incidents would have massive psychological scars.

Pretty sure it was the Watson fight. I'm sure I remember reading an interview with Eubank where he explained it wasn't so much the actual fighting that changed him, but it was the fact that Watson was caught coming in for the finish which always played on his mind when he had someone in trouble - he basically just didn't want to get caught coming in like Watson was.

Noticed you've been uploading fights mimmy. Some of which have had fidel Castro smith. You got any more of him, or Jawaid Khaliq? I know both personally and they'd love to get copies of their fights that they don't currently have

Yes. I particularly remember the Wharton fight as an example of this where Eubank at one point was expressly calling for the ref to step in and stop the fight to prevent Wharton from taking any further punishment. Basically Eubank totally lost his killer instinct after Watson.

Thompson was too dangerous to rush in on when he was hurt, plus he was a big powerhouse cruiserweight. I think Eubank didn't want to get caught the way he caught Watson.

Thompson also had a knack of playing dead on the ropes and then smashing the living daylights out of his opponent as they came in.

He did the same to Sebastien Rothstein, he looked to all intents and purposes finished, and then uncorked a right hand of the ropes that absolutely polaxed Rothstein.

Carl Thompson was a VERY dangerous man when hurt, and could end a fight with one punch - Eubank was probably not quite as close to stopping Thomson as it appeared.

There's quite a few fighters learned the hard way not to go in for the kill against Thompson.

The thing that impressed me about these fights is that Eubank was a career Super Middleweight, who probably should have moved up to light heavy, but yet here he was in with a world class puncher at cruiserweight and the punches just bounced off his chin. Eubank had one of the all time great chins, I think.

Exactly - in the heat of the moment I wouldn't want to take it for granted that Thompson was done. It still irks me that he wasn't allowed to fight on versus Johnny Nelson.

Dwight Qawi was another specialist at appearing hurt, only to fling out some hellfire at his unsuspecting assailant. The fighter who can play dead and possesses one-punch power must be among the most dangerous opponents there is!

Yes, that was bad luck for Thompson, he often looked hurt because he didn't have great coordination, so he was often stumbling around when under fire.

Yes, he lost control of his land rover on the motorway, and by sheer bad luck, careered into someone working at the side.

Eubank v Thompson 1 is one of the greatest fights staged in Britain.

Thompson did look in shock early, he'd never been hit with that level of speed and accuracy, early.

In hindsight Chris eubank should have tried to finish, because Thompson took the shots better in the brutally hard late exchanges. And took eubank's eye late - which would seal his fate in the rematch.

Similar with Collins, whom The Weird One dropped much more heavily if I recall correctly.

I think Chris Could have stopped both, but he had a strange temperament and may have been thinking about saving energy. Not to mention being worried about what happened in the rematch with Watson.
