Mikkel Kessler Announces Retirement

Post by GilFilmore »

Is Kessler an ATG?

I rank him as on of the Top 10 best super middleweights ever. Thoughts and reflections on his career???

Just had a look Boxrec's top ten all time and he makes tenth, behind Mads Larsen. I know its computerised but was the computer broken that day? Kessler holds a win over the number three in the top ten and Larsen never beat anyone near it, and was even stopped in seven by Brian Magee, who a worn Kessler stopped in three.

Ya that's a strange one.

Kessler was very good, obviously one of the best in what is a fairly new division, but in the wider context he falls short of being an ATG in my view. Too many of his standout wins are over solid but unspectacular fighters like Beyer, Lucas, Mundine, and Andrade.

The guy was a very talented boxer, fought the best out there. plus he was consummate gentleman and credit to the sport :box:
wish all the best and hope he does a bit for boxing outside the ring

Yeah I about agree with that. One of the best ever from the decision but not quite an all time great but a very good champion. It's worth pointing out that compared to Larsen all of Kessler's losses come to the Boxrec top three of All time in the division, and he even holds a win against one. One of the stranger anomalies I've seen pop up with the cpu ranking system.

Always liked Kessler, gave calzaghe a good run for his money and was a true gentlemen. His first fight with Froch was great to watch and the only negative I can think of was perhaps a few sour grapes after his loss to Ward.

Made his mark on the sport and got out with some cash and cognitive function still intact. Farewell to the Viking.

One of the nicest guys to ever lace up the gloves. In modern boxing only Paul Williams is probably a nicer guy.

Good, I'm glad to see it. I'd say that it's highly doubtful that he would get back to his best. He's leaving at the right time, I don't know how much more that he can do in the sport.

Certainly. He was undoubtedly one of the best fighters of his weight class in his time. He fought a good load of his contemporaries (unlike these weight-jumpers hopping up and down division carefully handpicking opponents) - Kessler was a true ring warrior of our time.

I wish him all the best of luck.

Shame about the mismanagement and injuries post Calzaghe, there's a few wasted years on his ledger between Calzaghe and the super six. I don't think he was at his peak by the time he got to the super six but still gave a good account of himself beating Froch in a great fight. Great fighter, past his best by the time he got to the rematch with Froch, so glad to see he has decided to call it a day.

Yup. Good but not great. A lovely bloke, though.

Also: thank fornicate he retired, rather than being fed to someone a decade younger than him.

One of my favorites. Glad to see him retire. He's one who could definitely parlay his looks and charisma into another form of on screen career. One of the best all time in a young division.

He was the kind of boxer able to go 12 hard rds and finish with a face like a daisy.
Never saw that anywhere else.
