I think he falls just short. I look at his career much the same as liston's or a foreman's had he not made the comeback. But my opinion is based on what I consider a "legend".

A legend I’m not sure, but in my opinion he will always be remembered for his power and for being the youngest heavyweight champion ever. Just like that bum John “The Hugger Man” Ruiz for being the first Latino heavyweight champion.

Well really he was past it when he fought Holyfeild and Lewis. Douglas on the other hand got him but Tyson wasnt the Berbick/Holmes form when he fought Douglas but still Tyson took a hell of a lot of punches before finally falling.

Berbick, Ruddock, Thomas, Spinks, Holmes (although past it but still good enough to beat Mercer and give Holyfield and McCall very good fights), Bonecrusher, Tucker, Biggs, Bruno - All good fighters and Tyson beat them all comfortably.

Yes he is a legend because of his immense popularity. Just as Sullivan, Dempsey, Ali etc. before him, his popularity transcended the sport.

Without a doubt he is a legend. One of the most feared fighters in history who often beat opponents before the actual fight ever started. At his best he was a wrecking maching, a monster who most of the time just went through opponents. He fought and beat some very solid opposition. Had he never returned to boxing after going to jail he would be considered one of the best by most people, but unfortunately a lot of people have only seen the second have of his career, or that's what they base it one, which even his second half was pretty good until he was just completely shot, which he has been completely shot since around 1997. The Tyson of 1988 was one of the best heavyweights to ever step in the ring!

Mike Tyson, A legend?

Post by Crease »

I would say this is very hard to call.

If Tyson aint a legend then no Heavyweight in the last 20 years can be considered a LEGEND!

Tyson in the late 80s was a monster, who destroyed everything in his path, (very much in the same mould as Marciano, Dempsey and Frazier) and since them days, the Heavyweight boxing division hasn't seen such power since...

SO, Hollyfield, Lewis and Vitali Klitchsko can (under no circumstances) be called LEGENDS...

Is Tyson a Legend ?

Post by Young Victor »

Yes he must be at least for being the youngest heavyweight boxer to ever win the World Title.
Furthermore he is both Famous and Infamous (must be hard to achieve)
I personally think he was mishandled or he without knowing better mishandled himself.
I do hope he now falls into better times as he did give us a lot to remember him by.

I think he had a major impact inside of the ring from the standpoint he was a breath of fresh air when the division sorely lacked exiting opponents. I thought he had a long enough run to establish himself as an all time great. Even after his loss to Buster Dougless and his prison sentence he still was able to come back and win fights.

Is he infamous? Most definitely. Is he a legend? That's hard to judge right now.

Let's give it 15 to 20 years and come back to that question.

Remember that fight with Tyson and Spinks? The look on Spinks' face during the stare down...Spinks didn't even make eye contact. If Spinks was such a great fighter...a legend in his own...then wouldn't that indicate that Tyson was a legend as well since nobody really wanted to fight him. His Knockout power and his ability to intimidate people before they even got in the ring. :box: Tyson is a legend, love it or hate it.

I think the only way you can become a legend despite being washed-up at the age of 23 is if your career is cut short by your tragic death. Thus, Stanley Ketchel has a shot at being a legend, while Mike Tyson's best chance is for the title of "has-been".

He forfeited the right to 'legend' status, following all his cowardly biting incidents against various opponents.

He will be forever notorious, but not a legend.

Say what you want about him outside of the ring, but inside he is most definetly a legend. Name another heavyweight fighter who had speed mixed in with immense power. Tyson was the perfect package and cleaned up the division filled with talented fighters.

Inside the ring without a doubt Tyson is a legend and if people question that than they dont know a thing about this sport.
