Sky Sports 1, 2 & 3 should be renamed Sky Football 1, 2 & 3 and Sky Sports 4 & 5 changed to Sky Sports 1 & 2. This better reflects Sky's views on sport.

Trips over step........ Football's fault
Sunburn whilst cutting the grass....... Football's fault

It's not football's "fault", i'm not gonna lie i'm a football fan too, but I hate what money has done to the game. the "Fault" lies with the broadcasters and the fans for forking out such obscene amounts and allowing it to from from a community/working man's social activity to a prawn sandwichfest that rakes money from community loyalty and puts it into the pockets of spivs. It's only really been recently that the effect of the gross capitalism in football is having a negligible effect on other sports.

The football bubble and financial model is unsustainable. It could get really messy.

Can't say I'm surprised.

Adam Smith is terrible - how did he get the job? Johnny Nelson is poor too.

Worst part of the show is when a fighter with a big fight coming up has to get in the ring and move around with Johnny and pretend to work on a strategy.

Like blue peter but with boxing as the subject.

But the most insulting thing about Adam Smith is that anythingg before 1995 and Naz does'nt exist. That is really poor for a sport with such a rich history.

It was rubbish - it just made the casual fan even more stupid and uninformed, a smoke screen with editorial line of hyping the fornicate out of a matchroom fighter, when in fact all they had done is beat up a journeyman OR selling a domestic fight card that was being offered as a PPV event. I stopped watching it ages ago, pure PR balls.

Ringside off our screens?

Post by surfthehurf »

I saw this on the latest BoxTalk video and it's all over the 'cheaper option' thread, so it deserves its own thread.

It seems Ringside will be online only. Bad idea because that excludes the general sports fans from dipping in and out of boxing. Well done guys, you're further limiting the exposure of our sport.

Yes TV is evolving, but a lot of Sky's viewership is from the football nuts who automatically tune into SS1 out of habit

As I said on the other thread, we'll still get plenty of Ringside 'specials' anytime Sky are trying to sell us a PPV.

I personally haven't watched Ringside for months so won't miss it. The only real sad thing about it moving online is that I imagine quite a few Sky employees will be losing their jobs as a result.

I really don't understand the decision. You're right, the 7 days before a PPV will be the usual assault of hype. Perhaps Sky Sports News will feature more boxers generally. With Price Groves and Ogogo in the Sauerlands camp, perhaps they will get some more airtime in the coming years.
I must admit though, I rarely watched it. Every Thursday I just go 'damn, it's Thursday I missed Ringside again'

How much does Ringside cost though? I've seen kids shows with better production values.

Personally I won't miss it, all they do is regurgitate the same ol' shite. "Exciting times indeed"

Its not just Ringside though Sky are cutting back across the board on 'non live events' to pay for the new football deal.

It's begining to show through already, most of the stuff on Sky Sports is crap that they've shown years ago like 'Time of their Lives', 'Premiership Years' 'Darts/Football/Rugby Gold' etc.

I never agreed with having Adam Smith as a host. It just screams bias. Surely having the Head of Sky Boxing telling the viewer about the latest stuff going on in the Boxing World is not right. I know if a proper Presenter did it, he/she would have Smith in their ear talking for them but that is the usual protocol in television. At least that way it's not so in your face.

The Johnny Nelson crap is just pathetic. Who actually enjoys watching him try to be funny? Why keep making him behave like a moron? Johnny actually knows his Boxing yet Sky don't seem to want him to show that.

Ringside became an awful Boxing programme, however it is a Boxing programme. The more Boxing on peoples screens the better. No matter how awful it is.

Give KOTV on Channel 4 a watch if want a Boxing Programme that is even more infuriating to sit through.

Once upon a time I enjoyed Ringside until I realised it was having the complete opposite effect on me that they intended to have. I'm too stubborn by nature to allow people to tell me what Im supposed to like etc and Skys constant Matchroom, Froch,
Joshua advertising mission made me start to dislike fighters that I would have liked otherwise.

It had the potential to be a great show if it was a general boxing show instead of being so self publicising. Will I miss it? Probably not.

Anthony Joshua, the future peoples champion.... Seriously? No disrespect to Joshua, I hope he does the business but sometimes I was kinda hoping for a freak punch to drop him on his pipe just to shut Smith and Co up. Price used to get the same treatment, not to the same scale of course but Sky done everything they could to over hype him too.

Bring back Friday fight nights and give some exposure and support to lesser known fighters and promotors.

It had its faults but I will miss the show, not loving what Sky is doing with boxing at the moment.

The last episode with them trying to make it sound great that there would be more online content instead was cringeworthy.

Adam: Exciting times eh Johnny.

Boxer A: Yeah I check Twitter every day.

Boxer B: We're really in the age of the Internet now.

Yeah, we've secured all these rights to show these obscure (but sometimes really pleasing) fights and we'll show you about 30 seconds of action!!!

Ringside was great between it's relaunch in 2010 and the summer of 2012 because Sky had shows from four different promoters and it showed a good mix of what was going on in the domestic scene.

From September 2012 to its demise on regular Sky platforms in 2015, it lost its way because it became little more than advertising for Matchroom.

Last night's episode was a total cringe fest aimed at the Eddie Hearn nuthuggers and 14 year old boys. It was like Soccer Am meets X Factor.

Just look at that still.

I can only imagine how much some fighters must want to punch this guy in the face
