Flanagan v Zepeda WBO Lightweight title

Post by ste1983 »

Looks set for Manchester Veladrome 11th July. Undercard to include Butler, Catterall, Stalker etc as the Liverpool card is moved over to Manchester.

Really curious about Zepeda. He has had his recent fights as a Welterweight so how has he got a title fight at Lightweight ?

Can he even make the weight ?

Really don't know what to expect just hope Terry does the business.

He missed weight so he wasn't able to win the title in his fight with Takahiro Ao earlier this month.

I know it's the WBO & therefore subject to no written rules whatsoever but as far as I can tell Zepeda has never fought at the lightweight limit (going off his record) & the last time he was within a couple of pound of it was in 2013.

Also, I can't tell from his many quick KO wins whether the boy's any good or not. He flattened Cayo, who never had much punch resistance & has had what little there was beaten out of him, but he is one of those guys who doesn't seem to hit that hard (until his opponents crumple).

He also hangs his chin out to dry & crosses over his feet all the time, lousy fundamentals.

Bizarre one.

I was wondering about that myself! When I first heard about the fight I tried to look this guy up and only guy I could find was a welter and hadn't seemed to have campaigned at lightweight at all. I just put it down to me being a muppet and looking at the wrong guy lol.

No ones really hit Zepeda back yet, he could be the real deal, but the weight making could be hard for him
I can forsee a late pullout or him weighing in couple of pounds over the limit

followed him prior the fight being announced and one to watch on my list so when the turbo fight was announced . am happy about this. we will get to know more about both guys.
zipped weighed in 135.2 as of last week, i had major major concerns bout him making the weight but it actually seems he may have been in the know about this opportunity before it came out in the public so it seems he has very very good backing for this fight and they are trying to give him every opportunity to claim this belt apart from the home advantage.

he was may weather chief sparring partner for manny pacquaio fight and by all accounts he dropped floyd, but thats rumours and has no bearing on this fight what we can take form that is he has at least trained with greatness and not embarrassed himself.

he is a switch hitter and seems to have a disregard for defense, mostly because he somehow and i guess it because his hand r heavy, puts his opponent on the back foot from the get go.

now turbo is avery good fighter and has impressed me at times with his boxing iq, . fighters like zipped are used to fighting people they are better than and able to be in control, i suspect turbo will have success making zipped experience things is not used to experiencing which is someone making him pay for his lack of defence and not on the backfoot. be interesting to see if zipped can fight off the back foot AT ALL.

Is it too cynical to say that i wouldn't be surprised if that's true and expected, with a replacement already lined up to step in at v short notice to 'give' Flanagan an opponent to beat for the title?

Was only a few ounces over last week by the sound of things so I can't see him struggling to make the weight, but if he's already down there then either he isn't a big lightweight, or he's going to be seriously drained by the time he gets in the ring.
