Rodriguez Jr got stopped by Gonzalez. Actually it was a referee stopage and imo the ref could've let the fight to continue a bit more. Also he had some tough fights against Katsunari, which he won it (ibf and wbo mmw titles fight) and the 1st fight against Fajardo, which he drew it.
This fight will tell us how much gas Nietes has left in his tank.

Rodriguez can look like one of the most talented fighters in boxing sometimes... His footwork is world class... and his straight punch arsenal including an excellent lead hand (jab and hook) make him a dangerous fighter when he moves, controls the pocket and jabs to set up his attacks. I think it's all in Rodriguez' hands the way he will strategically abord that fight and how he will execute the chosen gameplan. If he sticks and move, could neutralise Nietes.
Nietes likes to hang at the boundary of the pocket or slightly inside because he has such GREAT hands, ,precise shots quickly thrown in combos... He is one of the most talented offensive fighter at the weight. But if Rodriguez uses the evasive gameplan from distance which he can afford with his superior mobility, then i don't think Nietes will be able to generate enough offense. Nietes will try to close the distance while Rodriguez will be winning rounds with the lead hand.

Yes he will have a lot of problem . just an opinion . Rodriguez Jr. is a Pressure fighter . Do you think nietes can handle it ? Yes hes good but old enough im not impress With his fight w/ Velarde and Parra . And do you know fellow Filipino Ex world champ Merlito Sabillo ? He is not that great . But iam not expecting he will destroyed easily . Roman Gonzales? is too Good for Nietes and Rodriguezapollo creed wrote:Rodriguez Jr got stopped by Gonzalez. My opinion. Nietes will also have bad times in close distanceTheBeast wrote:Rodriguez can look like one of the most talented fighters in boxing sometimes... You could say "early stoppage" about the Gonzalez-Rodriguez fight, but I'd bet you dollars to doughnuts that Francisco wasn't gonna make it out of that round. A less lenient ref would've counted the knockdown earlier in the round as well (when he basically collapsed in the corner under pressure from bodyshots), & he was starting to get knocked around & had that physically-unravelling look imo. If you just look at the ending combo then yeah, in isolation bad stoppage, but these things don't happen in a vacuum & as a culmination of the previous seven rounds, I wasn't too bothered by it.
On to the fight on Saturday: it's gonna be a cracker. Nietes as you say isn't anywhere near as good as Gonzalez at cutting off the ring, & I think Rodriguez might be able to pile up a big lead as you said from behind the jab.
But I do wonder about the Mexican's fragility, & whether or not he can hold off Nietes down the stretch. D'you know if the Filipino is a big weight drainer, Beast? He looks fooking massive to my eyes...

Rodriguez will build an early lead and appear to be wearing out Nietes. Rodriguez will surrender to the temptation to turn up the heat and that is when Nietes hands and heart will takeover the fight, stopping Rodriguez in the second half.

yeah his footwork is pretty good but only for the first half of the fight then it fades away. Same with 'his straight punch arsenal'.TheBeast wrote:Rodriguez can look like one of the most talented fighters in boxing sometimes... yeah, it was an early stoppage and I agree that if the ref would've let it go more Rodriguez would've not survived too much under the Gonzalez's punches.Datsue wrote:TheBeast wrote:Rodriguez can look like one of the most talented fighters in boxing sometimes... A late stoppage win by Nietes might be the outcome of this fight.Tanzio wrote:Rodriguez will build an early lead and appear to be wearing out Nietes. 12 Light Flyweight
Donnie Nietes 35-1-4
vs
Francisco Rodriguez Jr 17-2-1
WBO World light flyweight title
Nietes won by UD
Nietes was in full control
IMO Rodriguez fought a very dumb fight not using his superior reach and footwork
