DeGale signs with Al Haymon

Post by ALI »

It should not come as a great surprise, but i must say i was not expecting this. Anyone know if Matchroom are still his promoters, or is Eddie out of the picture now?

Still with Hearn I believe. It appears Haymon and Hearn get on very well and so, I think it is more to get DeGale's name into the States quicker.

Haymon = Advisor
Mendy = Manager
Hearn = Promoter

Seems like Mendy has an easy job if Degale takes Haymon's advice!

No ground breaking news. thought it was then just remembered he will probably just fight in America now on PBC shows. Probably be better as he only sells 5 tickets per fight.

That seems like overkill, what exactly is the difference between an advisor and a manager?

Throw the trainer in that mix and he has a lot of people earning of his back.

Pretty much exactly what I thought. If all three of them are indeed still involved then how much less would his purses actually be if he were to only have two of them?

Boxing News have said that Handsome Eddie will promote him over here and Al Haymon will promote DeGale stateside. It appears to be a deal to give DeGale exposure stateside while still able to go for the domestic scraps.

So whenever someone signs with Haymon I guess it's relevant to ask what matchups can't happen now ?

I'd say he'll still earn more money with Haymon involved.

Haymon takes 15% as standard, McDonnell will be taking his cut, then there's whatever Mendy takes, doubt it will be 25% but he'll take a decent chunk and if he fights in America then Hearn will take a cut if he has a promotional contract with him, or he'll just take some of the Sky TV money. DeGale will earn more with Haymon, but a large amount will be taken from him before he even has to pay tax on it.

I always thought Al Haymon was an Arab for some reason.

You can imagine my reaction when i found out he was Black.

Apathy Graham, apathy.

Thought the same, expected him to be some Kuwaiti Prince until I read an article about him a few years back.

Looks like his making his move on british fighters now. Frampton,Degale could AJ be next?

Always thought it strange how few tickets he sells, as an Olympic medallist it doesn't make sense

Technically, Mendy is DeGale's agent not manager because he does not hold a BBBofC license.

As a huge DeGale fan, I would be gutted if that means DeGale now fights exclusively in the states.

DeGale seemed to be genuinely taken back and quite emotional when he was cheered at the O2, the week after winning his world title. It would be a shame if he didn't capitalise on his rising popularity, where I believe he could become quite a star here.

He has that "go away you cretin" charisma, that doesn't sell tickets. Guys like Eubank, Naz and Floyd etc could sell tickets by acting like baddies, but they did it with with a certain swagger. they has the "It factor" which makes fighters superstars.

DeGale and Adrien Broner just turn people off, Graham.
