Green vs Kovacs in Melbourne, August 19th

Post by Like a Boss »

Danny Green vs Slovakian Tamas Kovacs at Hisense Arena, Melbourne, August 19th.

Green (33-5) is 42. Kovacs (26-1) is 38.

Kovacs had a crack at WBA super world light heavyweight champion Beibut Shumenov four fights ago, but fell short, in his only loss.

Yes there is a Green comeback thread up that is already all over the shop. Let's keep this thread specific to the Green vs Kovacs fight.

Kovacs looked poor the only time I saw him fight a decent opponent. If Green has anything left he should win easily.

Which Kovacs fight did you see? Shumenov?

Yes, and he was totally out of his depth and showed a poor chin against a paper champ who hadn't beaten anyone that emphatically apart from his debut opponent.

Should be a breeze for Green if he's not way past it.

What crusader said. Safe fight for Green to shake off some rust. Here is a link to some of his fights against Slovakian goat herders and Hungarian kitchenhands for those interested.

At 42, and after a layoff most thought was retirement, Green was only ever going to take a very winnable fight first up. He would have been stupid after 3 years without a fight to have done anything else.

You agree. Yet you have been going out of your way to berate Kovacs as being some kind of mug?

I think he could have even gone a softer oppenent if he really wanted to. Kovacs seems a good fit though. I wonder what his plans are? Does he plan on fighting on and contending for a title? Or is he just going to have the odd fight for a bit of fun and to refill the piggy bank. Either way green is ok to watch. He comes to fight and brings the biff.

Kovacs is rubbish and Green is making him fight 5kg above his usual light heavyweight limit, garbage fight that only the uneducated mass's will enjoy.

Green isn't getting any younger and hasn't fought for a long time. So you are right. Kovacs is a good fit under the circumstances. Ricky Hatton demonstrated what can happen if you come back and try and bite off more than you can chew first up, and he was a lot younger than Green.

He is a mug but Green is smart to fight him after 2 1/2 years out. He has only 1 loss and a heavily padded record so the casual fan will think it's a risky fight and he will look good when he takes him out. Similar to BJ Flores but Kovacs record is even more padded than his and the weight suits Green more.

He said a rematch with Mundine is the end game.

Classing Kovacs as a mug is a bit rich. He is a pro fighter with a 26-1 record and his only loss was to a world title holder. Credit where it is due. He is a reasonable fighter, and under the circumstances a reasonable opponent for a 42 year old who hasn't fought for nearly 3 years.

Kovacs last 3 opponents.
Ericles Tores Marin 7w 6l 1d ranked 367 LHW

http://boxrec.com/boxer/567779

Hamza Wandera 18w 8l 3d ranked 253 CW

http://boxrec.com/boxer/367016

Zoltan Beres 44w 51l 3d ranked 513HW

3 lowly ranked opponents,3different weight divisions, all ranked between 253 and 513 add to those facts Dannywill fight him at his weight(probably 86kg) and he only stopped the 513th ranked Beres.
Green KO whenever he wants. :TU:

Nobody has suggested Kovacs is a world beater. Least of all me. Green was only ever going to take a very winnable fight first up and Kovacs fits the bill.

But as I said earlier, referring to a pro boxer with a 26-1 record who has only lost the once, and to a world tile belt holder, is a bit rich.

Mug is a term in boxing usually directed at battling guys with 50/50 win/loss records. If you are going to use it, at least try and apply it where it could be argued as being warranted.

Card starting to flesh out a bit >>>

Green vs Kovacs - 12 rounds
Brubaker vs Xing Xin - 10 rounds
Meunier vs Ahio

Can't think of too many Chinese boxers who have visited these shores.

I'm sure there will be other fights added in the lead-up to August 19th.

Be careful because bogans can normally fight as well as type and if every green fan is a bogan then you are likely behind enemy lines here buddy

Smithy had a couple of Chinese fighters at his last show in Toowoomba. Not bad fighters and one of them upset Kris George.

i actually enjoyed the cameron fight. Technically it was terrible but it kinda had that school yard scrap feel to it. Mainly the part where they are on the ground and green raises his fist as to give him one while on the ground. Obviously looked a little bit silly in the ring but i think it was all part of an intimidation ploy.
