Mayweather to fight Berto Tues. Sep.15 live on CBS
Re: Mayweather to fight Berto Tues. Sep.15 live on CBS
It's actually a brilliant move by Mayweather. I don't believe him when he says he's going to retire 49-0. It's not coherent with his character to simply tie Rocky Marciano's lauded undefeated record--I know Floyd wants to break it. I think he's setting up a bidding war between HBO and Showtime for the PPV rights to his real last hurrah. Fighting Berto on CBS sets up a lucrative potential 50-0 retirement because 1) he will make things right with consumers by giving them a free fight to make up for the $100 Pacquiao PPV dud, and 2) he will give himself a strong chance to score an exciting knockout.
Pretty smart.

I'm just glad we don't have to pay for it.
And guess who's the WBA champion at 154?

And Berto does

Why on earth would he retire at 49-0 when he can easily go one better?!!
I agree, he's having a nothing fight on free to air, where he can sell the idea of 'one more for the road' post fight, or leave 'em begging for more.
If Floyd never had a big fight again, he's already done plenty with his career, who else is he going to beat that will really enhance it.
There's nobody at 147 who is really seen as much of a challenge, Kell Brook - maybe, but really he's probably going to just get completely outboxed by Mayweather, same as everybody else is. After the fight, people will say - with some justification - he's unproven.

I think this is a good fight.
Berto isn't a bad fighter. He's not top 10 WW but he's easily top 20.
Put this on freeview on my tv and I'd be happy to watch.
He's a better opponent than mayfield.

Who says he has to fight at 147 and not 154?

Who are trying to bullshit? Coming off a loss? He beat Bradley and Rios before Algieri.IKSRTFO wrote:Pureist wrote:it should be a showcase fight for floyd you say, against berto, anyway you guys try to spin this its still an incredibly ridiculous mismatch, its on normal tv for 1 reason, no one in their right mind would pay for it, hes giving back to the fans, fans that will make up excuses as to why this fight is ok because floyd earnt it, hes made 100s of millions of dollars fighting, i think that was his reward, not fighting someone ridiculously below his own level, you blokes crack me up with your hypocritical views, you bagged pacquaio for fighting algieri and wrightly so, it should never have happened, but its ok for floydNateJR wrote:Just the type of fight I was hoping Floyd would take.. Then fighting on network TV for free is the icing on the cake. There will be a lot of people mad about a guy on the longest and hardest run in boxing taking a easy touch, but who cares. Floyd can fight who ever he wants, he's earned that perk and as was said before Berto isn't the worst option out there. It should be a showcase fight for Floyd, in which he should dominate from bell to bell.. But hey, guys like GGG have made a career out beating Berto caliber fighters and earning a monster reputation knocking them out, so I'd imagine in a perfect non biased world, Floyd should be labeled a monster for knocking out a 2nd tier fighter as well.. Or does he have to knock out 3 or 4 of them a year to earn that reputation? I need help with this one.
Difference is Pacquiao was coming off of a loss. If Floyd was coming off a loss, Berto would be perfect. And as of right now Algeri > Berto. Algeri was still undefeated when he fought Pacquiao and did better than Alexander against Khan. Berto couldn't even beat Karras
The hypocritical door swings both ways. At least be an honest hypocrit.
Berto is the #1 WBA contender, coming off a win over Jositio Lopez, who was good enough opponent for Canelo among others. His hatred of Floyd and rededication under Hunter should make it interesting at least. I would have preferred Brook or Thurman or Bradley. Hopefully it is more competitive than Floyd's last fight.

I don't know what people are complaining about unless this were really Floyds last fight
You get to see the #1 boxer in the world for free on TV
Win/win situation for the sport overall
Berto is a top 15/20 at welterweight and while I think it'll be wide decision, it's chance for Floyd to display what he does best
Please anyone tell me how Ali, Louis, or even Roy jones jr or Tyson was fighting only the top guys everytime out
They weren't.

Sure, but I bet you remember that time he "retired" after beating Ricky Hatton.IKSRTFO wrote:FloydtheDuck wrote:I don't know what people are complaining about unless this were really Floyds last fight

Let's see if I can help you understand. I'm complaining because I don't think Berto is deserving of a fight nor do I think he'll be remotely competitive. I believe he is Mayweather's worst opponent is roughly a decade, and in my view there are several other realistic candidates who would very likely give Mayweather a tougher fight and have accomplished more over the last few years than Berto, who was stopped only a few fights ago by Soto Karass, has.FloydtheDuck wrote:I don't know what people are complaining about unless this were really Floyds last fight

Floyd is a great fighter and has repeatedly beaten top opposition, so I can give him a pass for dropping his level of competition so drastically, but a fight with such a poor opponent by his standards is still disappointing, I won't be looking forward to it, and I think it's fair to mention this.
Also, are some people still trying to pass Lopez off as a top win? Lopez has been a punching bag against all his top 147-154 opponents other than Ortiz and his knockdown suffering struggle with faded fringe contender Mike Arnaoutis leads me to believe that he's been past his best for a while.

Still, there are implications tied to the definition of the English word "retire." He mislead the public then, and it wouldn't be beyond his character to do something similar again.IKSRTFO wrote:He never said that was his last fightRonin wrote:Sure, but I bet you remember that time he "retired" after beating Ricky Hatton.

I don't mind him having a below par defence, he's fought the top guys.
But the "it's free so you can't complain" line doesn't wash. People aren't complaining about value for money. They moan as boxing fans who want to see the best (in this case the very best) fighting the best.
The top names are all lining up, falling over themselves, even ducking each other waiting for the Floyd fight. The best fights are there for him and there are many more deserving than Berto.
And the double standards people are claiming don't exist.
People moaned about manny fighting Algieri, people moan at the consistantly weak level of opposition to GGG, Khan hasn't had credit for an opponent since Gracia.
Mayweather will get criticised for a weak opponent, he is p4p no1 after all.
I'm still watching it though

Floyd knows he cant compete with Canelo if he chooses a bum on ppv date during the mexican independence weekend.
So what does he do he fights on free tv so he can brag about doing "higher numbers" again.

Floyd knows cant pull a fast one with the ppv anymore after the Manny embarrassment.
A lotta ppl are fed up with him ppl cared cuz of the whole Floyd/Pacquiao thing but now he knows there is no way possible he could do a ppv with the bum opponents he wanted.
So he goes the safe route fights on free tv says its for the fans blah blah blah.

If Floyd picks a half decent opponent, he'll sell big PPV numbers. Nothing in life is surer.
Bradley, Khan, Brook, Thurman etc and he'd sell big numbers and still have a routine one sided points win.
People will piss and moan on the internet, tell the world they are boycotting and absolutely will not be fooled into buying this PPV, then they'll go buy it anyway.

Why not? He's the ring champion there. Nahh, if that was to happen i think the stations would demand for floyd to fight someone who could posses a threat to him. And void want do that.
