GGG vs the LHW champs

Post by crusader »

There are well known rumors of GGG besting Kovalev in sparring (Kovalev at least admitted that GGG punches very hard), and it seems to me like people generally see Kovalev as better than Stevenson. Give this and GGG's generally very high reputation, I'm curious about what people think the outcomes of these fights would be at 175.

This may seem like a very big size disparity, but I suspect that many would pick GGG to beat at least one of them. At this point I'd have him as an underdog in both fights though.

That is sparring - where Kovalev is trying to get rounds under his belt - not trying to smash him into next week.

It's commonplace for big guys to face smaller guys so they can work on offsetting speed and getting their timing right.

This is absolutely no indication that GGG would be able to live with Kovalev in a real fight, and anyone who believes it is, is deluded.

It's absolutely crazy how people are getting carried away with GGG - sure, he's looking phenomenal right now, at 160, without having faced a truly outstanding fighter in his own weight division, but how can you now say he would beat one of the current 175 lb title holders - he's not even had a fight at the weight!!!

The size difference would be huge on fight night between Kovalev and GGG so I favour Kovalev.

I pick GGG over Stevenson simply due to GGG granite chin and with Stevensons stance so big I can see GGG getting inside and causing damage.

Ola Afolabi also said Golovkin punches extremely hard in sparring sessions and he is a cruiserweight. Doesn't mean he'd beat Afolabi at 14st 4lbs though. Thinking like that, we could end up with GGG vs Huck

Now Froch has gone, Golovkin vs Ward is the fight at SM but then again, Ward doesn't seem to be able to fight at the true SM limit.

Ward vs Kovalev or Stevenson, is about right.

I think Kovalev is too big for GGG but I think GGG smashes Stevenson, Andre Ward and who ever else hold them ABC belts.
GGG is the best in the game. Mayweather aint fit to wash his jock strap. :box:

He hasn't even fought at 168 yet.
And may even go the opposite direction to 154 to find a challenge.

Why are we even discussing 175?

Because I want to get a sense of how people think he'd do against the best at the weight. I don't think for a second that he'll be moving there any time soon.

So far not doing badly, at least against Stevenson.

With Golovkin come forward style, he will not do well at LHW. Unless he changes his ways, he will be getting a lot of punishment.

Yes, some boxers move up two divisions and succeed (at least for a while), but those are usually either slick defensive boxers or spoilers or boxers with outstanding reflexes. Golovkin is none of that.

GGG VS Lara at 160 is the fight to make, but don't think GGG's team wants it. A slick boxer like Lara would give him a lot of trouble, and it would go a long way on GGG's behalf to cut off the ring and stop Lara. He's the best I have seen cutting the ring off, but it would be a challenge against Lara.

Angulo didn't have much trouble.

I have to agree that sparring means very little. It wouldn't surprise me if Kovalev was outboxed by GGG in technical sparring with 16oz gloves and headguards. Imagine trying to outbox (not beat up) GGG with a handspeed disadvantage.

Wasn't Andy Lee king of the Kronk and used to give Wlad fits in sparring??

Yes but boxers get stopped...even at their own weightclass. Doesn't mean they didn't succeed. They did. Trinidad and Pacquiao for sure were successful in the weight class they were stopped at.

I don't think that for fighters like Trinidad and Chavez who were so dominant in lower weight classes, their performance in higher weight classes could be considered a success.

The same with Golovkin: I don't think that anybody can be competitive with him at MW, at 168 it becomes trickier (at least with Ward) and fighting top LHWs can end up really bad.
