Re: GGG Beats Up Kovalev in Sparring
Most sparring stories are like finishing stories only a little less believable.
Re: GGG Beats Up Kovalev in Sparring
I always find it to be bush league when boxers or trainers let on about what happens in a sparring match inside camp. That information should be kept quiet because it's "Practice?!!!"
Anyone that has ever seen pro's sparring in the ring know that neither boxer throws punches designed to knockout the other guy. There's pull back on every punch and it's more of a speed and technique thing and, probably most importantly, they typically use enormouse gloves. Not the 8oz ones.
I like Abel and i'm a huge fan of GGG but I call BS on this one. Plus, Kovalev gets better and better with every fight. GGG vs Kovalev would be a great fight!

Bragging rights from sparring are like listening to a teenager talking about his sexual conquests. - Largely fictitious, and always exaggerated.
During training camps, it is common for the house fighter to big up their sparring partners to try and make it sound like they've had the toughest sparring and they are prepared for anything.
For instance......these kind of things.
....I swear - I know he's a middleweight - but he hits like a heavyweight......blah blah blah
"He's definitely a future world champion, the kid has got serious talent, I reckon he would beat any of the current champions based on our sparring....."
After the event, all kinds of claims are made by whoever was the sparring partner, about how they 'gave them a life or death struggle' or 'bashed them up."
I remember hearing about James Toney's spars with Danny Green, about how Toney was getting bashed up - in reality, when you watched the Video, Toney spent most of the spars laying on the ropes - working on his shoulder rolls, and occasionally firing back, this was in no way indicative of what Toney would have done in a real fight with normal gloves.
Sparring is not a real fight, and should not be treated as such.

I'm sure if some people went to Cleveland Cavilers practice everyday, they'll come out with stories how this bench player torched Lebron.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Bragging rights from sparring are like listening to a teenager talking about his sexual conquests. - Largely fictitious, and always exaggerated.
They probably didn't notice, Lebron was only using his left or practicing how to go through screens with a new big man. Top level guys use practice to work on particular things. Guys with something to prove usually go all out in practice. Good call on the Toney thing.
Anyone else miss being a teenage boy sometimes, the stories were great

Re: GGG Beats Up Kovalev in Sparring
Hmm and yet he won't even fight 50 yr old Hopkins.
Tell me another one.

Re: GGG Beats Up Kovalev in Sparring
He is cutting weight now. Why would he fight a LHW if he won't get credit for that, because that LHW is 50 and was soundly beaten in his previous fight ?diddy wrote:Hmm and yet he won't even fight 50 yr old Hopkins.

Re: GGG Beats Up Kovalev in Sparring
Because he would make more money than he ever has? Why not fight Bernard? Kova annihilated Bernard and GGG is destroying Kova in sparring, right?ikorolev wrote:He is cutting weight now. Re: GGG Beats Up Kovalev in Sparring
Kovalev would likely stop GGG in a real fight. Sparring is totally different, as different boxers have different attitude during sparring.
When you are talking about big money for fighting BHop, do you have particular numbers ? Where would that money come from ? Kovalev didn't earn much for fighting Hopkins.
If Gennady is really working on his weight now, it means he is likely preparing for Canelo (where he would really get good money) giving his body an opportunity to get used to the new weight. They will likely have a warmup fight at 155-157 against a decent opponent to see how it feels. Fighting at 175 or even 168 now would clearly interfere with the weight work.

It's sparring, don't read too much into it.
