Hmmmmm .

I was on this forum a few years ago when the EXACT same posts were being typed - almost verbatim - after David Price had devastated Tom Dallas & Sam Sexton!

Let's see, but I am old enough to be highly sceptical of hype.

And look what happened to Price.

AJ is much better than Price, but he needs to be put in with a higher level of oppo now.

Take your point on the posts above, he hasn't really been tested yet but has better boxing ability than Price. That's the great thing about boxing compared to other sports, you never really know how good someone is until they get hit, at which point they could actually be at a lot lower level then expected as Price has shown.

I get the Joshua-Price comparison but Joshua was a much better amateur and he turned over way before Price did in terms of experience. Price was a vastly experienced international amateur. Joshua won silver in the worlds in his 2nd or 3rd international tournament.

Joshua looks better at every comparable stage but as we all know, one punch on the chin can change things. A loss doesn't mean the end of the world but it can eff a fighters nut up.

Cornish had very little amateur experience and actually played Highland league football for Brora Rangers.
Given that he has done really well in his pro career but this for me is a ridiculous step up in class.
Hope he acquits himself well and does not get badly hurt. He will certainly earn his payday.

There are no certainties, however in return to your comment about Price I would point out how there was also great scepticism expressed about Carl Froch after his Adamu/Westerman fights as anything more than British level at best, and people who would claim David Haye wouldn't even get above domestic class in the Cruiserweights after Lolenga Mock and Carl Thompson. The comments about Tyson Fury in his first four years as a pro are now unprintable.

There's nothing more praiseworthy about being highly sceptical than there is for someone who is highly optimistic. The facts are Joshua has been moved on much quicker than almost every other hw prospect and passed every test with flying colours, so rightly should get more praise and hype than most. Even if he gets dropped by Whyte and scrapes past him on points doesn't make him 'shit' or guaranteed to not go above world class, no more than flattening Whyte in 1 round makes him ready to bounce Wladimir on his head like a basketball.

Skepticism doesn't equate to claiming that a fighter won't cut it at a certain level, so I wouldn't compare most of the questions being asked of Joshua to people writing off Haye or Fury, for example, rather than just questioning how they'd fare at a higher level, where the opponents would be better suited to testing qualities that haven't been tested yet.

A skeptic can be optimistic about someone's future, and being skeptical in no way suggests that a person thinks the fighter will prove to just another hype job or at least someone who fell well short of expectations. In this case I consider myself skeptical because I don't think that Joshua fought any offensively good opponents, anyone who took the fight to him and showed ambition to win, or anyone who qualifies even as a fringe contender, which in my opinion means that he hasn't answered questions other than those about his ability to dominate offensively at a relatively limited level. To me recognizing this while acknowledging that he is very promising, possesses qualities that will likely lead him to higher levels of success, and has performed at a high standard against the limited opposition he's faced has more merit as outlook than looking past the questions and instead claiming that he's already close to #1 in the division and/or that he's going to rule the division in the future. I think this because to me the first approach considers a wider range of relevant issues and possibilities, and I'll point out that skepticism is also fully consistent with a fighter turning out to meet or fall short of expectations, unlike a bold assertion that they will or one that they won't.

I think skepticism should be encouraged, while defensiveness when someone asks questions rather than blindly hoping on the bandwagon shouldn't.

Base him progress on the other 2012 Olympians and he's probably got the highest boxrec ranking.
Joshua is ranked #15 at Heavyweight, Lomahcneko is #9 (WTF?) at Featherweight, Murata is #18 at Middleweight and Oleksandr Usyk is #8 at Cruiserweight

Usyk has has 312 boxrec points
Lomachneko has 293 boxrec points
Joshua has 282 boxrec points
Murata 264 boxrec points

Strangely Murata and Lomachenko are ranked BEHIND people they've beaten (Murata is 2 places behind Shibata-who he stopped on debut, and Lomachneko is 5 places behind Russell Jr)

For what it's worth here are the other gold medalists who have turned pro-
Shiming (#30 in the talent laden Flyweight division with 72 points and is ranked 3 places behind Kwanpichit, who he beat)
Luke Campbell (#67 at Lightweight with 93 points)
Egor Mekhontsev (#35 at Light Heavyweight with 140 points)

Interestingly Ievghen Khytrov (who failed to medal) is ranked #24 at Middleweight with 229 points

Usyk, lomachenko and Joshua have been progressed super quick to get to were they are since 2012.
Shimming I thought was rushed.

Shame Dominick Guinn isn't fighting. Big Josh needs rounds.

Mind you I guess that's why Johnson was brought in and we all saw what happened there.

Cornish will do well to see out the first round. Pointless fight.

We need a sweep setting up on how many seconds it will go. It wont go 180 seconds. My guess is 150.

Ive only seen Cornish fight a few times and he's impressed me more every time,he's coming on at a decent pace technically considering he only had a handful of amateur fights, the first time i seen him i was far from impressed and thought he was a bit of a gimmick, with Gilmour playing the 1st Scot to win a British title angle, and he'd get KO'd before British title level but i think he can win a British or Commonwealth title one day assuming he doesnt suffer badly after inevitably getting KO'd from Joshua, once AJ moves on then hopefully Gary can pick up the pieces and move on himself

I dont like making assumptions and writing people off on here, especially someone from Scotland and i try not to do it with any fighter coz you never know but as much as it pains me to say it,i cant see Cornish making it past the 2nd round,i hope im wrong though and he gives a good account of himself because he seems like a nice guy and it was good to hear he forced Tommy Gilmour to accept this fight which shows he is/was confident

Im a massive fan of Joshua but its the Highlander im supporting all the way :box:

First really big guy Joshua has faced isn't it - I've not seen anything of Cornish, but that could cause some wrinkles Joshua isn't used to. We shall see.

He's just a lumbering oaf with no defence. Size won't play a part; Joshua will tag him very quickly.
