BOXER NEEDS BACKING
By Alan Lodge
RISING star boxer Mickey Steeds has set a date for the title showdown which could be a springboard to stardom.
The Isle of Dogs resident will enter the ring in Southampton - his opponent Colin Kenna's home town - on Sunday, March 5, for the Southern Area Heavyweight Title fight.
Victory would set up Steeds, of Westferry Road, for a long-awaited shot at the national crown.
He currently sits eighth in the British rankings and is widely tipped to become national champion before long.
But funding is proving a problem for the 22-year-old heavyweight, who trains full-time and does not have time to earn a living wage.
His coach John Rooney said: ``It's hard for Mickey to keep going when he doesn't have any cash coming in to support his career.
``He knows it will be worth it in the end, but right now he needs the right backing to ensurehe fulfils his potential and reaches the top.'' John is calling on readers of The Wharf to throw their support behind Mickey and help create a new British sporting legend.
He said: ``We would like to offer people the chance to back a local lad and help him achieve national and international titles by sponsoring him.
``For either a regular or one-off lump sum, Mickey will endorse company logos inside and outside the ring, as well as giving due thanks in all press appearances.''
Ringside seats will be made available to sponsors at all Mickey's fights, as well as the opportunity to see him train at the renowned Gleesons Gym in Tower Hill.
John added: ``When Mickey reaches his goal of British, Commonwealth and world title holder, the sponsors will know it was them who helped get him there.''
