Who wins Quigg-Frampton now?

Post by crusader »

For those who've seen both fights, what are your thoughts now about who would win?

I've only seen the Quigg fight at this point, and while I think Martinez was somewhat overrated it was still an impressive performance and one that I suspect will make Quigg less of an underdog against Frampton than he previously was. Given that Frampton was down and according to some buzzed later in his fight, I think that Quigg may be more capable of hurting him than I previously thought, though Frampton showed that he can overcome adversity and is obviously unlikely to bull forward and present the type of opportunities that Kiko did.

Frampton.

Gonzales was far better than I think anyone assumed. Hard as nails and could punch. I doubt anyone is going to be queuing up to fight him any time soon.

Frampton did go down twice but never looked hurt or in trouble; flash knock downs. He pretty much controlled the fight thereafter in my view.

It was still a fairly impressive performance by Frampton given the above.

Still Frampton. That fight was a blessing in disguise. He'll realise he cant just walk through everyone by loading up on the right.

Quigg is ok but Frampton will beat him !

Gonzales was absolutely ridiculed as an opponent for Frampton beforehand, so let's not re-write history and claim he was some dangerous unknown quantity.

I'd put Quigg-Frampton at roughly 50-50 now. Quigg is clearly the harder puncher, Frampton clearly the more skilled, and both look slightly fragile. Really hope it gets made soon.

But they both need to stay well away from Rigo - and anyone who was recently claiming Frampton would beat Rigo needs their fvcking head examined.

Still Frampton. Wasn't his best performance and he looked flat in there, no real sharpness to his work and he got caught with too many punches, but he wasn't hurt by either knockdown, looked like he was wobbled in the third though, mostly just sloppy though. Gonzalez was much better than expected, good jab, hit hard and his chin was solid, boxed well without doing enough to win the fight and was happy to swing them in low too. After the first round Frampton was more or less in control, had to think his way through the fight but I didn't see enough to write him off based on one performance.

I learned absolutely nothing about Quigg from that fight, he can punch, which we already knew, but it didn't go long enough to really see how he would deal with Martinez and the pressure he brings, or how he'd stand up to the power Kiko carries. Impressive to take him out like that but there's no chance of him doing that to Frampton, he won't walk onto a punch like that.

Another thing Gonzalez showed, and we saw it a couple of weeks ago with Granados, is that we can write off the Argies that come over here with padded records, but that doesn't apply to the Mexicans, even if the record doesn't look great, at least take a closer look at them before slagging them off, because they always come and have a go and they don't give a shit about losses early in a fighters career like we do, write them off at your peril.

How comfortable is Frampton at the weight, I thought it was an impressive display all in all from Frampton - he had to adapt on the spot to pull out the win.

He looked a bit heavy legged though and slow on the hands (compared to usual) is he dead at the weight?

Gonzalez was a strange one, very sharp and quick handed on the counters, when leading off he was like punching through treacle.

I still favour Frampton 100% vs Quigg. Gonzales was a surprise package and Frampton still controlled the vast majority of the fight and won comfortably. I wouldnt class him as being 'exposed' in any way just because he started slow and was dropped by two flash knockdowns.

I like Quigg as a fighter but think Frampton would still have too much for him. Quigg looked uncomfortable in the first round but never done too bad in the second!! :box:

After the fight they mentioned going up to featherweight, Carl said he had to take a lot of weight off in the last couple of days, definitely fought like he did. Whether that's down to him outgrowing the weight or not quite getting it right in the heat out there remains to be seen, they shouldn't rush into anything, only move up if there's a world title fight waiting for him there in his first fight.

Rigos last fight shown he can be hurt. Quigg can knock him out but would have to take a lot of risks.

Frampton will beat Quigg. Quigg's result from last night looks fantastic but until he caught Martinez with the uppercut when the Spaniard was ducking low he was looking pretty uncomfortable. That punch doubled in impact as it came up when Martinez was ducking down and it changed everything in an instant. Had that punch not landed it could've been a totally different result.

Quigg had a fantastic result last night. He looked great. Frampton didn't. Frampton has the better skills and Quigg may hit a bit harder. Last night makes the fight that bit more interesting! That young guy Frampton fought was a tough nut with skill and desire. When Carl boxed he absolutely destroyed him. When he tried to exchange at times he looked vulnerable. I think we need to see Frampton v Quigg more than ever now! Hopefully both parties can sort it out.

It's a toss-up to me and was before last night too. I think Quigg's a really dangerous fighter. As for Frampton, he hasn't gone down in my eyes after last night. Barry was saying he might move up to featherweight. Another obstacle to a Quigg fight? I hope not.

Yes, albeit ridiculed largely by people who had never even seen him fight. People just looked at his record. Or are you saying regardless of what we actually saw, Gonzales is still a nobody.... simply because people said he was beforehand?

Still Frampton for me. His opponent was better than expected and he looked massive at the weight.

I think it's pretty rare for people to look good on their first trip to America. Extra weight issues (no excuse for paul smith to be that big though) and acclimatisation etc but all in all, he clearly won.

Quigg should go after gonzales

The Frampton team and himself are going on about severe weight issues, surely you don't take your charge to the US for his big debut if he has trouble making the weight for the fight he is in! Frampton inferred he had to drop loads of weight in the last few days, would love to know if that is true and how much.

Something does not add up really on this one, now saying they may very well go up to featherweight, so why of not taken the Quigg fight for ridiculous money whilst you could still do the weight comfortably, the whole thing makes no sense whatsoever.

Regarding who wins the fight, for me its not changed, it has been 50/50 in my mind for the last year and is still that, Quigg looked great in finishing the fight in the second round, however for the first round he looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights. Frampton had a huge wake up call against a kid who no one rated but presumably few had watched on the discs/tapes, if they had, they would have seen the kid was rangy, throws shots in bunches, had quick hands and a granite chin, Gonzalez is 22, he will win a world title at some stage which makes it an ok performance from Frampton but not a world alight one.

Its a 50/50 for me too. But if Frampton does go up a division whilst it will hinder Frampton v Quigg it opens the door to Frampton v Selby - another fight with a ton of potential.

Agreed with all this.

Gonzalez now being overrated, he wasn't that impressive yesterday, looked stick thin for the weight and was getting outjabbed by Frampton for most of his fight as his timing was so poor. I wouldn't mind seeing Quigg take him on next, would be a convincing win.

I think you make some valid points, BUT - when was Frampton "last" comfortable at the weight? This was only his second defence of his title? Perhaps he has always been "tight" (or at least since his title days) and that's make part of the reason why he and Quigg have not agreed. Perhaps he knows deep down he is too tight at the weight to beat the top fighters in the division but wanted to make a name by beating unproven fighters like Gonzalez and Avalos before moving up to Feather and getting straight into main event fights.

I'm not convinced HBO would have accepted Frampton to fight someone like Walters immediately after the Martinez title win - in a fight that would be recognised as not just a Walters walkover. He needed some more US exposure and maybe team Frampton do think he is too tight at the weight to risk his growing reputation against the very best Super Bantams. Now I think HBO might consider Frampton as viable for the best Feathers and promote it as a 50:50 fight.

I don't think Frampton was exagerating the weight making issues, he didn't need to. He handily won a very very entertaining fight. He showed good stamina out there. If he thinks he could stay at Super Bantam then it would have been better to have come with the "caught a bit cold" excuse for the first round.

Alternatively, weight making is not a science and fighters can just all of a sudden be dead at the weight. Perhaps he felt fine for the Avalos fight and thought "i've got years at Super Bantam" and just all of a sudden, this time, struggled to get the weight off.

I'd never have said Gonzales was a nobody, but I don't think he was particularly good either. Frampton's performance flattered him last night imo.

BTW, it's not a bad thing that Frampton had to come through adversity to win - that was exactly the sort of test he needed & will set him in good stead for future fights. Was impressed by his ability to change his tactics mid-fight.

But if Frampton came out that sloppy against Quigg, there'd be a very good chance of him getting ko'd early.

I would still go for Frampton, for the reason that he will struggle much more with people who make him lead (his short arms mean he falls short and/or reaches) than those who will lead. I don't think quigg has the style or mentality to lure Frampton in, and fundamentally Frampton will always I think do well against aggressive fighters.

Also RE his weight he had better hope he can stay at 122. His dimensions would make it very difficult to win fights at a higher weight.

That's how I saw it. But as it finished early, it's difficult to come to any conclusions other than Frampton looks like an extra from Time Bandits with his massive head and stumpy limbs.

The betting has changed - Quigg is now 2-1, think was 3-1 before. I think that is about right. In boxing you're only as good as your last fight

The debate has been raging for a long time between the 2... comparisons of the belt they hold or the level of opposition they have fought... I have been in the quigg camp because i found it really difficult to separate the 2 as i really like them both... so I slightly went with quigg for the English connection, just like the majority of support for carl for irish roots... I do like picking sides in a fight as it makes for better viewing... I personally don't think any different to the both after yesterdays events just maybe peoples opinion of quiggs chances may have improved...
