Has David Haye become irrelevant to boxing?
Has David Haye become irrelevant to boxing?
pretty simple question.
As a Huge Haye fan I really hoped his promises of returning to the ring and working his way into a title fight would come to fruition. With no fights announced it is unlikely he will fight this year at all.
With British fighters like Fury now fighting for a title, chisora seeming past his best, price clearly not up for the job, and Joshua working his way up the ladder. Where does Haye fit into the British scene?
In another years time will he be able to get back into the mix? It seems unlikely.

Re: Has David Haye become irrelevant to boxing?
I maybe wrong but I think Haye is just sitting in the background waiting on things. At some point there is going to be a British world heavyweight champion it will happen in the next 18/24 months. If not the Clits (uggh just thought of my wife) will have gone by then and made way to beatable opposition. At that point Haye will start up a campaign of trash talk and walk into a title shot. I think thats about right really.
Re: Has David Haye become irrelevant to boxing?
He's a frustrating character that's for sure.
I've personally stopped taking any notice of him and nor will i until he announces a date and an opponent.

Re: Has David Haye become irrelevant to boxing?
He's irrelevant yes until he actually backs up his talk and gets back in a real fight. He obviously had some injury problems and it's a case of will he ever realistically be up to top level boxing again or has his time gone.
Re: Has David Haye become irrelevant to boxing?
He talks too much and does too little.
If he gets back in the ring then he'll be relevant again, until then he's not worth listening to.

Re: Has David Haye become irrelevant to boxing?
More or less. Boxing is still very relevant to Haye though, not in the sense that he has any intention of fighting again, but that by talking about making a return and how he'd bash up all the top heavyweights, he keeps his name out there and keeps himself relevant. Without it he'd have drifted away into obscurity by now, doing the occasional bit of punditry work, which will happen eventually, but while he can still convince people he's going to make a comeback, he'll keep talking about it.
Re: Has David Haye become irrelevant to boxing?
He's now in a position where he can't walk straight back into the kind of fight he wants to be involved in
but he thinks he should be able to, feels he's entitled even and probably has no interest in earning a top level fighgt the good old fashioned way.
He doesn't even have the support of the fans now after many years of pissing about

Re: Has David Haye become irrelevant to boxing?
Since he hit world level he has always been hugely inactive of course but you now have to view him as retired don't you?
He is still relevsnt though as I would put big money on a return once a Brit has a belt. He could be a voluntary for either. Let's face it money talks with all the world organisations and I am sure a ranking would be established from somewhere.
He is still probably one of the very names that Joe public still know and would generate £££ for both men, like him or not. Also say the 2016 version of Haye, injury worn and much older, would be viewed as genuinely beatable by either fury or Joshua.

Got a feeling he's going to fight Fury after he loses to Klitschko.

Can't see them dealing with Haye after him bricking it before. He cost them a lot of money and wasted a year of Tyson's career.Exoddus wrote:Got a feeling he's going to fight Fury after he loses to Klitschko.

Re: Has David Haye become irrelevant to boxing?
He said there was going to be a big announcement and then nothing happened. Maybe he is content with being a pundit now. Would love to see him back but I doubt he is willing to have 3 or 4 fights before a title shot.
Re: Has David Haye become irrelevant to boxing?
The only fights for him are Wilder, Fury, Joshua & maybe Browne. The Fury fight would probably suit David most.
If Fury hits the jackpot against Wlad I have no doubt Haye will do whatever it takes to get the first shot at him. If Fury gets embarrassed then there is nothing for Haye to do and he'll remain retired unless a particularly weak champion emerges in the next couple of years.

Reminds me a bit of the Naz situation. Never really officially retired and kept threatening to make a comeback time and time again but nothing ever materialised. I think he's decent as a pundit but until he has anything concrete fight wise I won't be taking any notice. It's all just posturing for attention.

Haye is only interested in a direct shot at a title - which he no longer has any realistic chance of getting. No way is he going to work his way to a title shot.
I doubt we will see him in a boxing ring again. In 18 months Joshua is going to be in a position to fight for a title, or thereabouts - maybe sooner - by then, Haye will have become a distant memory.

Possible I suppose. That's the one fight which might get Haye a fast track to a title shot - could be a big money fight, and one Haye could potentially win - though I think he would get annihilated personally.keithmoonhangover wrote:Joshua next summer. Watch. This. Space.

Re: Has David Haye become irrelevant to boxing?
How does he actually train these days? A few months ago he looked really small (think he actually said on Twitter a return to Cruiser was possible) then he started looked a bit chunky/fat in the face, next thing he was posting pics on Twitter of him bulked up from the weights.
Re: Has David Haye become irrelevant to boxing?
I'm surprised he hasn't tried getting a fight with arreola made by now.
Re: Has David Haye become irrelevant to boxing?
He's a dick. His crusierweight career was superb and I had the uptmost respect for him when he travelled to Paris and beat Mormeck. However, once he became a household name and got money he lost his hunger for boxing and was only interested in cash and fame, not a legacy or respect. His career as a heavyweight was shocking for all his big mouth.
Anyone remember when he used to always complain at cruiser that he was only operating at 60% of his ability as he was so weight drained at having to take off 2 stone per fight? yet when he fought at heavyweight the most he ever weighed was about 15st7lbs? he is just a serial bullshitter. I don't mind big mouths when they ca back it up, but when they fight like he did against Valuev and Klitshcko then I lose respect for them.

Even if he announced a comeback today, would anyone actually believe him enough to buy tickets for his next fight? I certainly wouldn't.

I think Arreola's got his eye on the next Prizefighter.Finn wrote:I'm surprised he hasn't tried getting a fight with arreola made by now.
