Kovalev vs. Mohammedi on HBO

Post by Freedom2013 »

Harold Lederman gives his analysis and prediction:

Mohammedi is a decent light heavyweight, he's ranked #9 by The Ring magazine. That being said, nearly everybody is picking Kovalev to win.

Mohammedi is probably a bit overrated at #9. He's decent, but he lost to Sukhotsky and Cleverly, and his best win is Dudchenko who never did much of anything as a pro.

Krusher will krush.

I actually think Mohammedi will last the distance but he'll be dominated and outboxed every round

Or Kovalev might KO him in 1

For some reason I thought Mohammedi had never been stopped :KO:

2 of his 3 defeats have been by KO, in the 1st and 2nd rounds

I won't be changing my PTBF though :bag:

I can see Kovalev walking right through him and stopping him in the first 4 rounds.

Krusher by 6th round clean KO.

Mohammedi is a bit overrated at #9. He's top 15 I guess, but I don't consider him a top ten LH.

Brutal mismatch. Mohammedi has zero chance against Kovalev.

Kovalev wipes him out in maybe 2 rounds at most. Complete mismatch. Mohammedi's actual record indicates he belongs nowhere near this level.

Stevenson took a brutal amount of criticism for fighting Sukhotsky, and that's someone who blew Mohammedi out of the water. Kathy Duva said that fans "don't care who Kovalev fights," which basically tells you the average fan can't tell the difference between a grappling dummy and a legitimate light heavyweight contender. They also, it seems, won't buy tickets, as she admitted sales were terrible. And they blamed a BJ Flores fight for their problems, like people are rushing to see him instead. The whole show is pathetic, actually.

Mohammedi is Kovalev's IBF mandatory. Sergey HAS to fight him, the IBF enforce their mandatories. Mohammedi's been waiting a long time for his shot. He's Ring #9 at light heavyweight.

It's only a mismatch because Kovalev is so good. Mohammedi has improved the past two years, and he is working with GGG's trainer Sanchez.

It's not as bad of a mismatch as Mayweather-Berto (Berto isn't ranked by the Ring or Transnational, and he's not a mandatory). And let's not forget, Kovalev just fought two top 5 LHWs Hopkins and Pascal.

All that being said, I do wish the IBF would do a better job of selecting their mandatories! Mohammedi-Dudchenko was a poor final eliminator.

It's a worse fight than Berto/Mayweather. Berto's recent wins are better P4P than Mohammedi's, his carrer losses are better, his talent level is higher; literally everything is better. Mohammedi is in this position because Dudchenko (who is horrible) was Main Events' fighter and the IBF pushed up Mohammedi to be an "easy" opponent for Dudchenko to beat and gain mandatory status. Mohammedi won and the Duvas had to scramble to sign him to keep their strategy of holding in house mandatories afloat.

Again: this fight is trash, Kovalev will win inside two rounds.

Berto isn't good but he's of a much higher caliber than Mohammedi. Be serious. Berto has actually beaten some pretty good fighters. Prime Collazo and Carlos Quintana were good wins.

Mohammedi has beaten no one and will get destroyed here.

Duva is delusional. I'm going to watch the Shumenov vs Flores fight on Sat because there is actually some question as to the outcome and check Youtube later for Kovalev's highlight reel.

Too bad they couldn't have Pascal in there with a better known opponent.

Sadly, Haymon has tied up several of the better light heavyweights.

Nadjib is an aggressive fighter with good hand speed and great endurance; he is always in tremendous shape and treats every fight like there is a title on the line.

He throws punches from all angles and can pose a threat to any top light heavyweight contender.

One thing, though, one can say what he wants about Pascal, he, at least, does not take easy fights like Kovalev did tonight.

The other thing you can say about Pascal is that he was a pretty easy fight for Kovalev himself.

This is what happens when you put a middle easterner into a war without a weapon. Awkward. Uncoordinated.

Kuziekmski? Bolonti?

Mohammedi didn't belong in there with Kovalev but it was a mandatory defense. He was probably lower top 15 so it's not like they reached all the way down to find a Rob Salka or Eric Molina either.

It's ridiculous to criticize the caliber of opposition of a fighter who has fought Pascal, Hopkins, Cleverly, and Campillo. Also, Yunieski Gonzalez is a random who never fought anybody, and was never even a top 50 divisional fighter at any point in his career. In other words, this was an easy fight for Pascal on paper, and it's sad that it was competitive in reality.

He wasn't lower top 15. The only way he might qualify is if you haven't watched the fighters in that division and don't know anything about it. Mohammedi basically WAS a Rod Salka.
