Fighters KO'ed early in fight but not thought to have bad chins

Post by Controversial »

Quite often fighters get called "chinny", glass jawed or they are generally thought to be vulnerable in that area. What fighters have been knocked out early in a fight but aren't thought of as having bad chins. Not debut fights or very early into their career, I mean established and normally durable fighters knocked out quickly.

Duran (LKO2) and Sumbu Kalambay (LKO1) spring to mind, what others?

I don't know if he was KO'd but didn't Collazo get done in 3 early on ?

Also Adonis Stevenson had done OK since Boone, although Fonfara had him down

Didn't Bernard Hopkins get ko'd on his pro debut?

I always find watching Bonecrusher in his first fight to be a strange experience. It seems that he started his career bald and badly out of condition, got young and fit and grew a respectable head of hair and then he ended his career looking exactly the same as he did at the beginning.
Anyhow, it's a surprising result, totally gassed and stopped in 4 by James Broad, considering that he went the distance against Witherspoon, Tubbs and Tyson and finished on his feet against Holmes.

Kalambay and Herol Graham come to mind. Max Schmeling, Jersey Joe, Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier.

Quite a few of the above were debut loses which can be argued were down to lack of experience or being thrown in over their heads. I was more thinking of established fighters

Didn't he throw that fight?

To be fair to Tucker, he was 38 years old at the time.
Rocky Lockridge got stopped by Juan LaPorte in two rounds. However he showed in throughout most of his career that he had a good chin.

Lost a majority four-rounder, I believe mate.

Arguello & Vazquez are genuine shockers, seeing the bombs they both stood up to later in their careers. Though, to be fair to Wilf, all Israel Contreras could do was punch.

Pedroza was stopped in two by banger Zamora.

You'd have to say that Cuevas losing to Hearns in such emphatic fashion was a slight anomaly but it was all downhill after that.

Milton being sparked in 2 minutes by Jackson was a bit of a weird one given he beat McClellan on points, again, all downhill after that.

Thomas Tate went the distance with and competed well with Julian Jackson and was destroyed in 2 by Jones Jnr.

Manny PAC had a couple of inside losses early.

John Ruiz was caught out by Tua but was pretty sturdy after that.

That's another example of the better talented fighter (in this case, the great Emile Griffith) was stopped cold by a stronger and bigger foe in Rubin Carter

To be fair he didn't have a great reputation either, wasn't thought of as having a good chin.
