Joseph Parker vs Bowie Tupou - August 1st in NZ
Kevin Barry says Joseph Parker's body is evolving as fast as his boxing skills and rankings. Parker has returned from his latest Las Vegas training camp in peak physical condition, unveiling his new look in Auckland.
"Joe is looking like a real heavyweight now. But you don't get a body like that without hard work," trainer Kevin Barry said.
Barry allied any fears that Parker's physical development might hinder his hand speed and movement, key attributes that have taken him to No 8 with the WBO and No 10 with the WBA on the back of an unbeaten run over 14 professional fights.
Barry is confident that Parker will still enter the ring around the 106kg mark he fought at to quickly knock out Yakup Saglam in Palmerston North in June.
He said Parker had reduced his body fat and increased his muscle.
"Most of the strength work we are doing is Joe using his own body weight through pull-ups, push-ups and sit-ups," Barry said.
"Joe has seen the results and been inspired. He's also very, very disciplined with his protein shakes."
Barry said having a regular training partner in Izu Ugonoh had also proved inspirational with the two pushing each other with their work in and out of the ring.
When Barry came on board as Parker's trainer in 2013 he told the management team that it would take two years for the fighter to grow into his body.
"I remember standing him in front of a mirror before we fought Frans Botha and telling him to take a look at that person because he would not remember him in two years, and that is how it has played out."
Barry said.
Parker is fighting a big man in Bowie Tupou who is expected to tip the scales at round 120kg at next week's weigh-in.
Tupou comes into the fight with a WBO ranking of 13 meaning there will be instant reward with that respected organisation for the winner.

Re: Joseph Parker vs Bowie Tupou - August 1st in NZ
Fenech was on NZ radio saying Tupou had knocked down 3 of his sparring partners, and over on Checkhook a guy said
"Rumour has it that Tupou knocked Kali Meehan out in sparring during the past week."
NZ TAB has Parker at $1.08 and Tupou at $7
Looking forward to the fight, but think Parker will be too fast
Good to hear KB working hard on JP's defense of overhand rights

Tupou has power to burn and Parker is hittable. So Tupou has a puncher's chance for mine. But if there's one thing Tupou doesn't cope well with it is speed. Malik Scott easily beat him to the punch all night and Parker will probably do the same. Parker just has to ensure he doesn't get clobbered by a bomb along the way.

Scheduled for 12 rounds. Somewhere neither has ever been before. Parker's speed will see him continually land first. But if he unloads and makes the mistake of standing in front of Tupou, Tupou will load up his overhand right and bulldoze forward.

Jeff Fenech says Tupou has been sparring Kali Meehan, Lucas Browne, and Solomon Haumono in the lead-up to fighting Parker. Top quality sparring partners.lowlefthand wrote:Fenech was on NZ radio saying Tupou had knocked down 3 of his sparring partners, and over on Checkhook a guy said

Top quality but all pretty similar. Flat-footed heavy punchers. Has he trained for speed?Like a Boss wrote:Jeff Fenech says Tupou has been sparring Kali Meehan, Lucas Browne, and Solomon Haumono in the lead-up to fighting Parker. If Bowie is going for the KO (and Fenech says it's the only way he can win), he's likely to walk into some pretty heavy shots from Parker before he gets too many of his own off - Parker has shown he's got plenty of power.
Great for fans though - 2 guys who are coming to win at all costs

Yeah fair call on the sparring partners. But Parker is a fairly unique heavyweight.lowlefthand wrote:Top quality but all pretty similar. Flat-footed heavy punchers. Is Parkers chin OK? If he has agood chin he should win easily. Should win anyway unless he gets too sloppy. Tupou dropped Jenings(wasn't counted)so Joseph will want to be careful. Possible banana skin type fight for him.

Duco continuing to talk it up regarding where Joseph Parker is heading. With Parker's promoter Dean Lonergan claiming Deontay Wilder is in their sights once Parker gets past Bowie Tupou tomorrow >>>
"Wilder is six foot seven, but he only weighs 99kg and Eric Molina wobbled him," Lonergan said.
"Jeff Fenech has been training Tupou and we know he's fit. This is his entry into the big time. A defeat for Joe would set us back a long way."

I can't see Wilder still having the belt by the time Parker gets a shot. Povetkin is his mandatory and Joshua is ranked WBC no. 2

Re: Joseph Parker vs Bowie Tupou - August 1st in NZ
Joseph Parker's planned schedule following his fight tomorrow with Tupou in Invercargill, is bouts in Auckland (Kali Meehan?) and Hamilton before the end of the year. Followed by a January 24th bout in Samoa. The potential for one more fight in New Zealand and then starting a campaign in the USA.

Re: Joseph Parker vs Bowie Tupou - August 1st in NZ
I just found out they are looking at going down the WBC Pathway
They want to fight Wilder for the title potentially late next year or early 2017
Assuming Wilder is still champion then

What a KO
Tupou isn't anything special but along with his other results it's hard not to keep an eye on Parker with a finish like that.

LOL is that what you think? Tupou dived harder then Paul Briggs - That was a fix.crusader wrote:What a KO

I watched on a choppy stream so I'll try to catch a replay on YouTube.

Wow!
Upon watching the slow-motion replays on YT it's tough to argue with you. Did either of those punches even land?

What happened?

Tupou was stopped about a minute into the first following a left hook-right cross combo from Parker and lay motionless on the canvas. Replays show that the left hook seemed to miss and the right hand landed only as a glancing punch. It did land high on the head but I've never seen a boxer knocked out cold like that from such an innocuous looking punch.
