Gonzalez came out with a lot of fans for his performance...and then even more for getting shafted...HUGE night for him!

Gonzalez is a fun fighter to watch but he doesn't strike me as one that's going to really show much improvement. With nearly 400 amateur fights under his belt and still fighting flat footed with that weird chopping right hand, I can't see him climbing much higher than what he did tonight. Should've won, but hopefully HBO will play their part in doing some good for the sport and feature him again.

Everything Gonzalez does, Kovalev does better. I don't see the potential challenge.

Meaning, he's a good fighter but he doesn't have the X factor to push him to the next level. He's like a Fonfara type of fighter, more or less.

1. This was not close to a robbery. I had it a draw; Gonzalez winning 1, 3, 7, 8, 9. Multiple rounds were close. Lederman was completely off the mark in the first half. I would have had no problem with Gonzalez 96-94 or the opposite.

2. Gonzalez should not have been in there last night. He needed a bit more seasoning as a pro to deal with a top level veteran like Pascal. He took far too much damage. He suffered psychologically. His management blew it. They miscalculated how much Pascal had left.

3. Pascal deserves far more respect than he gets. He was in tough v a larger, stronger, younger lion and he found a way to get to the cards, finishing stronger than Gonzalez. Pascal gave Kovalev fits. Pascal competed evenly with the definition of cunning, long in the tooth lions- BHop.

4. Gonzalez is too slow, plodding and easy hit at the top level. I like the kid but he was not quite ripened enough for the Pascal level of competition. At LHW he would be a GOAT at heavy bag work.

Except Gonzalez has a better chin. However, I don't think he punches hard enough to stop Kovalev meaning that he himself will be eventually stopped.

In round 8 when Lederman had the fight a wipeout on the cards I turned to my wife and said "well the whole broadcast crew is toeing the 'fight is not close' line when a bunch of these rounds were toss ups. Gonzalez will end up a draw or lose and they'll all scream robbery".

Boom. UD for Pascal.

Pascal clearly lost. God help the three blind mice and the rare observer who disagrees, their vision is seriously lacking.

verballistic, can you add a poll on whether Gonzalez won. I bet around 80% will vote that he did.

I thought Gonzalez won. But if we are being totally frank a lot of those rounds were awfully close. Gonzalez gave the impression of being more effective but was swinging wildly and missing quite a bit. Pascal threw a lot less but landed at higher frequency.

he beat a top 4 opponent in pascal, gonzales doesnt have to climb any higher. he mght not win against kovalev, but he sure as hell would have a chance against anybody else, with his big size and build striong like he is.

Gonzalez has worse defense, better chin by a slight margin. Kovalev took Pascal's shots just the same, but got hit less.

Pascal is on his way out. If he rematches Kovalev, that'll probably send him to retirement. There's some other talent coming up at LHW that has more potential. I'm not saying Gonzalez is bad, but he's not a threat to Sergey. It'd be a brutal stoppage.

pascal is onhis way out, but still very strong, last fight showed how tough pascal still is, he lost, but he showed heart and came in tip top shape.

losing to serguy isnt that bad, he is the #1, he is supposed to beat everybody else. but like i said, you are good and be succesull even when you do not beat the #1 in the world.

i think he can climb higher. he already climbed very high, from a nobody to a top 10 light heavyweight by beating pascal. so who is now in the top 10. guys like brähmer, chilemba or alvarez

he can beat anybody in the top 10 with his size and power (he looked like a cruiserweight against pascal), except stevenson, bertebiev and serguy, that would be tough ones. but he showed tremendous heart, endurance and chin, bert would have a tough night against him. so, gon can climb in the top 4 region, if that isnt climbing high, than what is high?

Gonzos inexperience showed last night. He should have been more selective with puncher and traded much less. He was shaken more then few times. He needs to tighten up his defense and work behind the jab more. He is miles behind Kova in every department. He should take comfort from all the positive responses from fans though and must not get disheartened by the unfair decision.

Gonzales does all the work and lands big shots throughout the round.
Pascal lands 3 or 4 "big" shots. (Which Gonzalez walked through)
Pascal wins the round ... judging for the name.

Also, there is zero upside for Gonzalez losing. We have all seen, many times, a fighter lose confidence after a fight like this.
Or he has and off night twwo fights down the road, and everyone says he was never that good to begin with.
He already "lost" at the top level. Or some other bullshit.

... and of course, typical slave-minded boxing fans. This type of outcome is no good for anyone.
In no other sport do people say such idiocy. Because in every sport there is respect for the work it takes to put your self at the top level.
So EVERY opportunity is precious.

... but most of you, and most people don't know basic math. (Not economics math, which is an art because it's solely based on desire)

Those are not the only opinions that matters these days. I saw huge outpouring of support for Gonzo last night on social networks as well as huge outrage about the official scorecards. As others have said he made his name yesterday. That is not much less important then getting a W on your record. Essentialy he have guaranteed another shot at big time with that effort. Think of Fonfara.

None of that will erase the L.

Gonzales is fan friendly. I question his ability to stay at LHW. His skills are better suited for Cruiser, IMO.

He will get more opportunities, deservedly.
