1910s: Sam Langford — Small man beat the best big men of his day. Runner up: Jimmy Wilde.
1920s: Benny Leonard — Some still say he’s the greatest lightweight ever. Runner up: Harry Greb.
1930s: Henry Armstrong — Held titles in three weight classes simultaneously. Runner up: Tony Canzoneri.
1940s: Ray Robinson – Untouchable as a welterweight. Runner up: Willie Pep
1950s: Ray Robinson – Also one of the greatest middleweights ever. Runner up: Archie Moore.
1960s: Muhammad Ali – The Greatest really was the greatest at this time. Runner up: Carlos Ortiz.
1970s: Roberto Duran – Virtually untouchable as a lightweight. Runner up: Carlos Monzon.
1980s: Ray Leonard: His victories over Duran, Hearns and Hagler were epic. Runner up: Julio Cesar Chavez.
1990s: Roy Jones Jr. – At his best, he inspired awe. Runner up: Pernell Whitaker.
2000s: Manny Pacquiao – Sorry Floyd but you need to fight the best to be the best. Runner up: Floyd Mayweather.
2010s: ?
what are your thoughts? and what do you think who is gonne end up #1 for 2010 decade (ggg, floyd, manny, ward..??)
for me, i think this list is pretry accurate. maybe 70s you good say sugar, know he only had 3 years, but he was prime, undefeated and simply looked like a rare talent.
2000s obviously, the big disscusion, was prime pacquiao #1 in the world or was prime mayweather #1 in the world? to be quiet honest, i still, even after the fight do not know. the fight was close and floyd did nothing but running and manny was totaly out of his prime, so was floyd. but around 2008-2009, both were prime and this fight would have 100 % determined the #1 2000 decade. you could say floyd is better technicly, but you manny had more power and this crazy condition punching heavy shots for start till 12 round. tough close fight.

Good post, sounds like a good article and I like their picks for each decade, don't think any are obviously wrong.

Oh, and who is #1 for 2010s? So far I think it's Floyd, but he almost certainly won't be by decade's end. Gonzales, Ward, Kovalev and GGG are all in with a good shot.

thanks.jezzamundo wrote:Good post, sounds like a good article and I like their picks for each decade, don't think any are obviously wrong.
yeah. i think all picks are correct. maybe you could say pernell in 90s. think about it, chavez fight was a robbery, ramirez fight in my eyes pernell won, so in my estimate he was 42-0 when facing oscar. but down the line, prime jones was prime jones, to me the best ever. but prime pernell in the 90s was a close second.

to me it all comes down who climbs division and can he bring his power and skill in a division higher.
no matter if its rigondeaux or golovkin, if any of those guys go to featherweight and super middleweight and handle opponents like their did in their favourite division than it will be very in very interresting to see.
2010 decade. skill/technic i think it is rigondeaux. i mean, lets be honest he wins like every damn round against top guys like donaire or agbeko, like they were nothing. only big problem is that lower weights dont count as much as higher weights, big match ups simply take so long to get made. frampton, walthers, lomachenko, cruz, mares all against rigo, i would favour rigo against all them, but they simply dont let it happen.
so since i think rigo is not gonne get big fight, therefore realisticly ggg is gonne end up being #1 of the 2010 decade. i do believe canelo is gonne come to middleweight, maybe catch weight, same for cotto and that in 2-3 years ggg will go to sm where ward is gonne wait for him and i think ggg will fight and beat cotto, canelo and ward, that will establish him as the top leader for vote best 2010 decade boxer.

I'm probably HW biased but I see a lot of action here.
Joshua and Parker look fantastic. Hughie Fury is right behind them. And Fury and Wilder get ridiculed but keep winning so far. Yes I know Wilder beat my drunk uncle...
