Yep you are right. I see one of the judges had Weaver winning 117 - 113, I dont see how thats possible as most people saw Coetzee win the first 9 - 10 rounds with a 2 point round in round 8. But Ive seen worse scores and it was definetly one of the best title fights in the 80's!The Great John L wrote:According to BoxRec, Weaver was ahead on all three cards at the time of the stoppage, which is how I remember the fight. It was very competitive, but Weaver was just a bit too skilled and strong for Coetzee.
your best come from behind k.o. ever

weaver was the better fighter than coetzee, end of story. it was not a come from behind KO, weaver thoroughly was beating coetzee most of the fight by around 3 points entering the 13th. this fight shouldnt even be mentioned in this thread.

When I saw the replay the so called knockdown looked like a push to me. I know it was ruled a knockdown. As much as you follow the old time fights I am sure you have seen it also. Perhaps you even own the film where you could view it again. Unfortunatly I do not so I just have to go from memory, but unless my mind is playing tricks on me it looked like a push and nothing more.BrocktonBlockbuster49 wrote:iceman21287 wrote:Yep, I completely agree with you. I know it was very controversial but there you have it.
Gotta throw in an honorary mention to Firpo v. Dempsey though. One more second and Luis would have had the greatest come from behind KO in boxing history
well if the ringsider didnt help dempsey up, firpo probably would have won.
i dont think its a cinche, what about lamotta-duathille, lamotta was getting thoroughly outboxed then his playing possum payed off and he tore into duathille knocking him out with 13 sec left.

good one! i gues emile griffith kept telling bonecrusher to go to the body, but it wasnt working. entering the 10th round bonecrusher said "griff, let me do it my way" and he went out far behind on points and knocked out bruno.
Yes, it was a push of a right hand that finally sent Dempsey out of the ring, but he was clearly hurt before that. It always bothered me that it was a push that sent Dempsey out of the ring and caused all the hoopla. Still a fantastic fight and Dempsey was clearly hurt when he was put back in the ring.kick asner wrote:When I saw the replay the so called knockdown looked like a push to me. Yes, that was the same night as Eddie Mustafa Muhammad (still Eddie Gregory at the time) stopped Marvin Johnson to win the light-heavyweight title.expug wrote:Ah ..tough one all I can remember is Weaver -Tate and Eddie Mustafa Muhamed badly K.Oing Marvin Johnson. Did Leonard fight?Ambling Alp wrote:expug, expug wrote:The Weaver - Tate fight if I remember correctly was televised on A.B.C. on a Friday night in prime time. Man have things changed.
The fight was on primetime on ABC, but it must have been on a different night because I remember we were all talking about the fights at school the next day. (Can you imagine kids talking about boxing anymore?)
Weaver was supposed to be a stepping stone for Tate, if would have won, he would have had a big showdown with Larry Holmes for mutli millions.
Here is a trivia question, Tate-Weaver was part of a quadrupleheader. Do you or anyone else remember who fought in the other 3 title fights?
Yes, Leonard was on the card as well. He defended his welterweight title against Davey Boy Green. Going into the fight, Green claimed to have a "secret punch".
The other fight was Larry Holmes defending the WBC heavyweight title against Leroy Jones. ( A guy who made Tony Tubbs look in shape).
This was the least eventful fight, Holmes won pretty easily.
4 title fights on prime time network TV on the same night. Those were the days.

You obviously havent seen the fight. Coetzee was beating Weaver to the punch and landing several crushing right hands that made Weaver stagger. In the 8th round Coetzee had Weaver completly out but was too tired to follow up on that right hand he landed and Weaver managed to survive. If Coetzee had paced himself he would of won no question.BrocktonBlockbuster49 wrote:as most people saw Coetzee win the first 9 - 10 rounds with a 2 point round in round 8.
