England ,Scotland and Wales have always sent separate teams to previous European Championships. When did this change?
It also seems strange that boxers already qualified for the worlds are unable to compete at the European Champs and the nation is not allowed to send an alternative at that weight.

Re: European Champs-Combined GB team?
its actually a great thing that they have finally made GB combine there teams, its a ridiculous advantage to be able to send 3 boxers in each weight class to Olympics qualifiers and since these European championships act as qualifiers for the world championships which in turn act as a qualifier for the Olympics, its not fair to leave britian send 3 boxers in each weight class
as for not letting countries send boxers in weight classes they have already qualified from well that's also a great thing. Think about it Ireland Qualifed Brendan Irvine at 49kg. If we sent paddy barnes to this one, the next best 49kg fighter in the European championships could draw paddy in the first round, get knocked out and miss the world championships, and it wouldn't make a difference at all as Ireland still wouldn't be allowed send two. Its in the interest of fairness and to make sure europes best boxers reach the world championships rather than some of our best boxers getting knocked out by the Russian second string and neither getting to go to the world championships

The countries all run separately from each other, the only reason they have the GB squad is because of the Olympics. They can only send one to the Olympics anyway so I don't see the problem with each country sending their own fighters. Pretty much every other sport they compete as individual nations.tflanagan5 wrote:its actually a great thing that they have finally made GB combine there teams, its a ridiculous advantage to be able to send 3 boxers in each weight class to Olympics qualifiers and since these European championships act as qualifiers for the world championships which in turn act as a qualifier for the Olympics, its not fair to leave britian send 3 boxers in each weight class

the problem is one federation getting 3 bits at the cherry every time. If this wasn't a event that leads onto oympic qualifier then it would be ok but not for this. Not unless all 3 countires decide to compete separately in the Olympicsexpe wrote:The countries all run separately from each other, the only reason they have the GB squad is because of the Olympics. what would you think if Russia was allowed to send 3 boxers in every division to qualifiers? and britian for some reason all drew a Russian in the first round and all got knocked. then the guys that knocked them all out didn't even get to go to the Olympics? its highly unfair and im glad they changed the rules. If you want to send 3 boxers then compete as separate nations at the Olympics its that simple
Re: European Champs-Combined GB team?
It's three federations, not one, ABA, Welsh ABA, Scottish ABA. They don't have the option to compete separately, that decision is completely out of their hands, partly due to the BOC, but also because the government wouldn't exactly be keen and some sections of the public would make a big deal out of it.tflanagan5 wrote:the problem is one federation getting 3 bits at the cherry every time. Russia is one country, as are England, Scotland and Wales, obviously none of them are going to be able to send three fighters. Even if they did and they lost, I wouldn't really care about them not going to the Olympics, with the Russians, Cubans and the rest of the Eastern bloc there would be very little chance of them winning a medal if they can't beat any of the top 3 Russian fighters.

where Olympic qualification comes into place its only fair
and yes the 3rd string Russian boxer in some division is very strong. Middleweight for example there 3rd string boxer just won bronze at the euro games and only got knocked out due to a cut and not being able to fight in the semis, he could have won gold. What say if fowler met him in the first round of qualifying ,knocked fowler out and then some worse boxer from somewhere else in Europe then qualified because he just avoided the Russian. A Russian who wont even be going to the Olympics.
il give you an example , at the last world championship Kal Yafai and Andrew Selby got too the quarter finals and qualified. However Yafai beat a very good Mexican to get to the quarter finals and qualify and it ended up that Yafai lost the box off and didn't get to go to the Olympics anyway. So then that talented Mexican ended up not making it to the Olympics when he got beat by a fighter who also didn't get to go. Put it this way Russia have qualified basically a whole team for the world championships already, if they were aloud send another full squad to the European championships they could end up knocking out some excellent boxers and Europe would be poorly represented at the world championships. EG paddy barnes could go to the euros, dominate it, knock out the best remaining light flys in Europe then some poorer light flyweight could qualify and Europe would be badly represented
and tbh I wish Ireland could still send a a full squad to the euro championships but it just wouldn't be fair

Re: European Champs-Combined GB team?
Russia do send a few boxers in each divison though all be it in a different way, nowadays you have 3 or 4 Russians boxing for Azerbaijian, and one for Canada, theres probably more, sure even a Cuban is boxing for Azerbaijan it seems a bit unfair they can do this.
Re: European Champs-Combined GB team?
Cuban born Lorenzo Sotomayor does indeed represent Azerbaijan as do Russians Khamza Nametov,Magomed Kurbanov,Albert Selimov,Magomed Dzhabrailov,Gadzhi Mutazaliyev and Arslanbek Makhmudov.
I do believe Great Britain should only have one representative at International Championships.
