He was the business. Wasn't "From Hell" his nickname or something?..............might sound a touch ignorant this but I'm a little bit surprised that someone out of Moscow could reach that level of ability at boxing. It's not exactly an easy place to get on for an ordinary chap, I'd have thought.
Also, I would have thought the Russian Mafia and general ne'erdowells would be bothering you like flies around sh*t wanting you to "do jobs" for them.
It really goes to show how good those Americans were around that time. I can't remember who Karmazin lost to, but I know he slipped up against at least one of them, although I think he may have been a belt holder, for a little while anyway.
"Made in hell"
I remember seeing him at Ally Pally, dismantle a local lad whose names momentarily escapes me, he ripped him to bits, and some of his supporters got a bit miffed when I explained that really the guy never had a lot of chance against Karmazin.
David Walker - Christ 12 years ago that.
Walker never seemed to recover from that loss, he wasn't ready to step up to a 12 rounder against someone like Karmazin, got thrown to the wolves really.
I wouldn't say he got thrown to the Wolves at all. He never took a "good hiding" it was all over in about 3 rounds and I think it was body shots that did for him.
Also, as - possibly Steve Bunce - alluded to nearer the time, he'd had something of a national campaign going for him in the tabloid media had Walker at the time because he was a Feel-Good story, looking after his ailing mother at home, whilst aspiring for greatness, and it was suggested that it was all a bit overwhelming in the end!............I'm not so sure I agree with that bit though, personally. I just think Walker was the can and Karmazin had the right tin-opener, he was just too good for him.
As regarding thrown to the Wolves.......what was he supposed to do,
not take his shot at a European Title?....at least I assume it was for the European title as i can't think what else it was for............Walker probably belongs in the same bracket as Johanneson on that count - he was just handed an insurmountable assignment.
