Emanuel Augustus had a fun fight against Jon Thaxton

Yeah that was a classic tussle. They brought over Augustus expecting him to be a tune-up for a world title shot. Augustus managed three fights within the month. One in America, one in Denmark and that one against Thaxton in England.

that is hard core.

Yeah and after all those ring wars he gets shot walking back from the gym, wrong place wrong time.

Goyo Vargas, The unknown Mexican came over to take on the high flying hard punching Scouser world champ Paul Hoko Hodkinson, who'd been flattening everyone and was heavily fancied to do the same against the Mexican.
But Vargas shocked everyone, straightaway stunning Hoko & showing he meant business then cooly boxing countering and taking apart the pressure fighting champ. It was so impressive that a lot of people thought they were watching a future great,but he was upset by Kevin Kelly next up, I think he may have had a bit of a party lifestyle I seem to remember, and he never hit those heights again.
But it was an amazing performance at the time I watched it must be again on YouTube, Jim Watt spots straight away that he is going to be trouble, though the oblivious Reg Gutteridge doesn't seem to realise Hodgkinson is going to lose until right at the end.

Good shout, Mighty I remember Goyo and how smooth and coordinated he was, he used a brilliant uppercut. Hoko was a really good pressure fighter with a really neat style - he was beaten by a very good fighter that night.

Much in the same way Carlos Palomino came over here and took the WBC title from John H Stracey by stopping him in 12 rounds, then Palomino came back almost exactly a year later to stop Dave 'boy' Green in 11

Michael Dolan, editor in chief of Athletes Quarterly, just told me on twitter that he visited Augustus last week and has made 'slow and steady progress' and there will be a lengthy feature on him in the magazine in September. Sounds like good news considering what happened.

Yup Simon was top drawer and beat a few of our lads handily.

Think he comes from Walvis Bay in Namibia which had a rep for being a bit of a rough, tough port town....the last place the nasty, old South African regime gave back to the Namibians and I think a sort of military enclave for a while.

So he probably grew up knowing how to take care of himself.

Well if we're on the subject of Namibians I'd like to throw shout to Ali Nuumbembe. I don't bet on boxing nowadays but I pocketed a cool 35 quid the night he beat Kevin Anderson for the Commonwealth strap, having witnessed Nuumbembe up close. Betfred never saw me coming that night.

Who remembers David Tetteh? really good strong lightweight that came over here and wore Billy Schwer down in 12 rounds. Tetteh went on to fight Billy Irwin losing and winning on points, he should of fought for a world title, but never really got the support he needed.

Also Pablo Daniel Sarmiento who beat Schwer in Billys last fight, the Argentinian had a good series of fights over here

Juan Carlos Gimenez was hard to get excited about........although he was big in Paraguay I suspect...but to be far to the man he always did his best when he came over here and took lots of shots from Eubank and Benn. Bit of a lump of granite and did not really blink even when Eubank and Benn hit him bloody hard...hard not to admire that. Sadly, he did not throw much back.

Calzaghe got him as well..... seemed that defending the title against Jimenez was a bit of a 'box ticked' exercise for our top middle/super middles.

Jake Matlala, not exactly an opponent, but came over and duffed up quite a few of our fighters. Just saw that he died at 51, what a shame.

Affif Djelti turned over a few of our boys at Super Feather. His was a great story; turning pro at 31 and losing his first four fights etc.

This is who I immediately thought of.

Mahyar Monshipour was the one I liked the most. Was brought over in 2001 as an apparently moderate opponent for Michael Alldis - he beat him convincingly, won the European title, then the WBA title, held it for 3 years and even when he lost it, his losing effort was Ring Magazine Fight Of The Year for 2006. My favourites have always been the imports who turn out to be vastly better than had been anticipated.

Buster Drayton was so formidable here against Mark Kaylor and Jimmy Cable - both of whom he stopped - that Mickey Duff quickly signed him up. Drayton had learned his trade sparring Marvin Hagler.

Calzaghe - Gimenez was my first ever live show, must have been Joe's 2nd or 3rd defence. As I recall, Calzaghe pretty much battered him nonstop until Gimenez retired around Round 11.

Omar Sheikha was on the undercard, he was quite entertaining when he came over as well.
