Kessler to fight Larsen?

Post by Autobarn »

By Per Ake Persson

Danish media are speculating that an all-Danish showdown will take place at super middleweight with WBA champ Mikkel Kessler taking on Mads Larsen, who settled the managerial dispute with Mogens Palle out of court the other day. The two fighters shared the same gym and trainer (Ricard Olsen) for a number of years.

Lets get it on... I would like to see Mads have a warm up fight first, but I look forward to this one.

I am a fan of both, around the time of the Ottke fight I would have picked Larsen - but Kessler has improved and Larsen might have gone back... I think its a toughie to pick, but I think the European lads seem to be edging for Kessler when I argued that Kessler wasn't the best Super Middle in Denmark.

They'll have more knowledge on this one than me.

Larsen will need to have some fights first. Its rumoured that he will fight in either Germany or Britain (And one becomes suspecious when a danish TV station made a deal to show 18 live Warren cards this year, just a day after Larsen being released from his contract with Palle.

That's a fight that should happen -- as long as Mads gets at least one or two tuneups prior to the matchup. Then, hopefully the winner could be matched with the Lacy-Calzaghe winner.

Good enough to KO tough (if aging fighters) like.

Sugar Boy Malinga - how many fighters stopped him? Larsen was one of the few

Simon Brown

Peter Venancio - Decent fighter who ran William Joppy very close in a world title fight, and beat Verno Phillips.

Very good fighters, with good chins - but Larsen KO'd them.

Also should have got the decision vs Ottke - thought it was one of the few fights in which I think the criticism of Ottke getting dupious decisions was deserved.

Strong man.

Larsen definately needs more fights to make it interesting as he is too inactive to match Kessler at the moment. Larsen is a good Boxer but i would back Kessler over the distance to have a little bit more.

I would think that Kessler will win by UD or maybe late stoppage as Larsen has been to inactive. I think Larsen has a chance if he can land some big shots but Kessler should be able to jab his way to victory.

This is the sort of clash that could make you travel abroad just to see these two world class Danes compete. Presumably it will take place in Copenhagen if it does materialise.

Strong man.
Larsen was running behind Ottke all night, but neither man connected cleanly more often than a handful of times. Ottke's legs had already slowed, thus we was just focussing on not getting hit while "forgetting" that he also has to counterpunch. You could have given the fight to Larsen on activity, but that's it.

Larsen is very solid and strong, but I can't see him being a serious threat for the slick and sharp and smart Kessler we've seen recently.

Calzaghe has got it on with Mark Delaney, Eubank,Reid,Starie,Woodhall and offered it to Collins but he pulled out and retired. I also think a bout with Dean Francis would have materialized if Deono hadn't got so badly injured. So you can't say that old Chocolate Fist Joe hasn't faced off with most of his domestic rivals even though I admitt that he should have gotten it on with Clinton Woods at least a year ago and should also have given Glenn Catley a shot way ahead of some of the out and out bums he fought in the early days of his reign. Oh and he should have given Reid a rematch aswell but on the whole he has faced most.
A Yet for some reason the Danes never seem to get it on. We have Kessler, Larsen and Rudy Markusen in the same weight yet you very rarley hear of any possibility of a clash between them.
Same in Germany. Maske never fought Rocchigianni at Light Heavy. Very few of the world rated cruisers ever clash and Beyer and Ottke were never even rumoured to be fighting. Though I think that Sturm did beat Schenk at Middleweight.
On the whole the concept of domestic honour doesn't really seem to mean much and instead the aim seems to be more collective world domination. Maybe a Kessler-Larsen showdown will open their eyes to how exciting a domestic showdown can be. :TU:

I saw Larsen fight against Danilo Haussler and he gave the German a good steady beating. Im not sure fighting Kessler straight away would be a good idea, but after 2 or 3 warm-up fights it would be a good fight.

Havent seen either enough times to comment on a winner.

We do have domistic showdowns here, the latest one was 2 weeks ago. But its difficult to have domestic showdowns here when you only have 1 promotor and only few pros in each weightclass (and often on different stages in their careers). Kessler and Markussen is both a product of the CIK gym in Copenhagen and Larsen trained there when he was active so it would have been difficult to make a fight between Larsen & Kessler since they both were trained by Ricard Olsen (Same goes with Beyer & Ottke, both trained by Ulli Wegner).

Maybe he could have dispensed his advice to one man and then jogged over to the other corner to do the same :D
