HBO is pissing me off
So you televise 8 Golovkin fights, at least half of which are against total no-hopers, and when you finally manage to get him his first decent opponent in over a year, you put it on PPV? Seriously, what a tremendous "f*ck you" to all your loyal subscribers.
If it was Golovkin/Cotto I could understand but Lemeiux? He's what, a borderline top 5 MW? Neither of these guys has headlined a PPV before. The whole thing leaves a terrible taste in my mouth.

It's MUCH better than Mayweather-Berto.
There's a very good under card: Gonzalez-Viloria, Johnson-O'Kane and probably Ortiz-Stiverne (just needs Don King's signature, everyone else has agreed).

Much better than Floyd/Berto? That says absolutely nothing.
Gonzalez/Viloria is a fun fight but a mismatch. Viloria is getting brutalized and will probably be something like a +1000 underdog.
I do not care about O'Kane or Johnson at all.
Do you really think Ortiz/Stiverne adds significant value to the PPV? Maybe a few bucks at most.

Plus, it's not really about the value of the PPV card itself. It's more about the people who subscribe to HBO for their boxing cards. If you're going to put all the one-sided crap on HBO and the good stuff on PPV, what's the point of subscribing?

A tiny violin comes to mind. However, I would prefer this card was on HBO or "free tv" too.

I don't think it should be on ppv but i'm a fan enough of the sport and after a weak year for ppv boxing I will buy. But ppv should be cheaper, this fight should be $39.99 and $49.99 HD.

Anyone know what the pricing is? If it's $40SD/$50HD or something like that, I might buy it anyway despite my protests. I haven't bought a boxing PPV since Canelo/Lara since most are absurdly overpriced.

There is more intrigue in Golovkin vs Lemieux than in Golovkin vs Cotto.jujigatame wrote:So you televise 8 Golovkin fights, at least half of which are against total no-hopers, and when you finally manage to get him his first decent opponent in over a year, you put it on PPV? Firstly, I completely disagree with that assertion.ikorolev wrote:There is more intrigue in Golovkin vs Lemieux than in Golovkin vs Cotto.jujigatame wrote:So you televise 8 Golovkin fights, at least half of which are against total no-hopers, and when you finally manage to get him his first decent opponent in over a year, you put it on PPV? Secondly, Cotto is the linear champ and has already headlined like half a dozen PPVs, so it would be expected for that fight to be a PPV. Golovkin vs. the #5 MW in the world who has like 1 meaningful win on his record? Not so much.
Re: HBO is pissing me off
Leave it to this guy to get his shot in on BLACK people. GGG vs Lemieux is PPV worthy but HBO should've waited until his next bout to decide it being a PPV fight especially if he puts Lem to sleep.jujigatame wrote:Much better than Floyd/Berto? That says absolutely nothing.

People want to see GGG but they've already gotten used to the idea of him fighting non-PPV bouts, if he faces Cotto or Canelo then that's when they should start charging.

Its the best middle can offer but Lemeiux has shown me shit other than he starts fast and can punch. Been beat twice already against b level guys and now headlines a PPV??
Re: HBO is pissing me off
Maybe they should add Quigg-Otake (which was incidentally part of a weaker PPV card--though I believe you called it 'stacked'--on a network that is increasingly turning to PPV for good fights while loading non-PPV cards with mismatches).jujigatame wrote:Much better than Floyd/Berto? I was surprised to see this end up on PPV, but I care more about fights than names. I think it's shaping up to be a top card that on paper looks likely to produce a good mix of elite ability, entertainment and competitiveness, and I'll take that over many PPVs, which are often accepted just because of high profiles. I'd also say that Martin Murray was a decent opponent who GGG fought this year, and I care little about who the lineal champion is when they've swerved the top guy in the division and are fighting at 157 and 155 CWs rather than letting opponents use the full range of the weight.

That card cost $0 for me to watch in the US. If it was a UK PPV then I'd have no argument with UK viewers saying it was a ripoff.crusader wrote:

Re: HBO is pissing me off
After G wipes the canvas with David, he (Dave) will be lumped in with the other guys, like Macklin and Geale, who were supposed to give G issues. HBO understands what a draw G is at this point in time, and this match-up has potential. I can't be mad at em. The main and co events include two of the most delivering guys in the sport. I don't have a problem with the PPV. Strike while the iron's hot.
As stated in the introduction, HBO has given their subscribers 8 fights showcasing G's talents. So, why not put an entertaining card on PPV? I believe it will do respectable numbers. He is already drawing stars to the HBO cards.

Again, I understand why people are upset that this is on PPV, as that typically is reserved for higher-profile bouts, but as someone who doesn't put much worth in names alone I don't think it looks like poor value compared to what is usually on PPV. GGG and Gonzalez are fun to watch, two of the top fighters in the sport, and are matched with respectable opponents (very arguably both top 5) with reputations for being exciting; Stiverne-Ortiz is a very competitively matched fight between a top ten guy and an unbeaten contender; and Johnson-O'Kane is a solid bout between entertaining and fairly well-matched fighters with a mandatory shot up for grabs. There's not one boring fighter on the card and I think it will probably be a very fun night of fights.
Re: HBO is pissing me off
The GGG hater brigade has already turned into white noise for me on this site. How any TRUE boxing fan could knock the guy for the opposition on his resume is beyond me. For once, we actually have a champion looking to fight the best in the division every fight out. If the current PPV king of Boxing had a morsel of that attitude, we wouldn't be stuck watching his track meet slap fights for $100 the last 5 years. Make NO mistake about it, GGG is taking the keys from Floyd and will be the top grossing fighter in boxing.
The GGG/Lemieux fight has broken pre-sale ticket record at MSG. This fight will be jacked up with celebrities and important people paying top dollar to see these two warriors because they don't dance. They are not Kenyans running around the ring for 12 rounds. The fact that this fight is selling so well after the Floyd and Manny debacle that almost ruined boxing is amazing.
It is PPV worthy? To me, yes. I thought that we were 2 years away from every seeing these two guys in the ring so i'm really shocked that Lemieux took it. For the casual fan though, i don't think it's PPV worthy. If you don't care enough about this fight to pay $50 for it then why even comment on it? Don't watch it. There are plenty of people pumped to pay to watch this battle because one thing we know, these guys don't dance and steal money from fans trying not to get hit in the face.

Who is hating on GGG? You just posted 3 paragraphs of rambling in response to nothing more than your own imagination.
