I agree. Was there too and i remember getting to my seat and it was next to a bunch of meathead locals and thinking 'oh poo'. Turns out they were great and wanted haye to win![/quote]

Yeah it was definitely squeaky bum time, we were near a massive crowd there to support mormeck, but when Haye won, they came over and shook our hands, and even stood up and applauded him. There were a lot of proper boxing fans there that night.

I don't rate the Tyson win, Mike was too far gone.

I was trying to remember who fought Napoles, that's a hugely forgotten one.

Napoles was old when Stracey got him too, must have been a massive result at the time. Anyone know if it was televised on delay or what the reaction was at the time?

....as evidenced by the fact I couldn't even remember myself!

And I don't think he actually should given he beat an out-of-shape and unmotivated Duran. As others have already said on here Honeyghan vs Curry is the stand-out if we're allowed to go back that far. Before that you also had Buchanan beating Laguna and Stracey beating Napoles in his hometown of Mexico City, which surely have to be up there.

Blah blah blah. Duran was out of shape. Whatever. Duran was out of shape for all of his loses except Hagler. Yeah right.

Dear oh dear... well go on to Youtube and take a look at the fight for starters, while Duran's subsequent performance against Jimmy Batten gives you yet another indicator of the condition he was in, both mentally and physically. Rewrite history if you like, but I've yet to see anyone make a case for Laing having beaten an in-form version of Duran.

Me either - good as Laing was, there's absolutely no way he beats an in form Duran, they were leagues apart in terms of class. Duran is arguably the best lightweight who ever lived, and was a beast at Welterweight. Laing had skills for sure, but he was not a thinking fighter, but rather one who relied on instinct and reflexes.

I ain't rewriting anything. I've watched the fight and Laing fought the perfect fight, which by your logic, means that it was what Duran didn't do, not what Laing did do. Applying that concept to all of the fights in history, every time a strong betting favourite lost, it was because they didn't train properly and weren't focused. Bollocks.

Danny Williams - Tyson?

Not a world title fight but a shocker. Though in my mind; and despite the fact Kevin is Irish, Mcbride-Tyson was massive upset. It was odds on that McBride would lose in one round. The odds were 1.83 for Tyson round 1

Cowdell v Sanchez
McCauley v Bassa
Though he lost every second Andy Hollighan gave it a fight go with a prime Chavez in front of a massive crowd.
Johnny Nelson gave Adilson Rodriguez 2 very hard fights in Brazil at heavyweight.

Danny took some amount of punishment in that fight if I remember correctly. He looked ready to go a few times himself. Great win and massive shock.

Hatton Tszyu is an obvious choice. Tszyu was at the end of his career but was still very capable. It took everything Ricky had that night to get the W and he left nothing in the ring.

Richie Evatt (RIP) gave Junior Jones a real scrap.

For sheer guts and gameness Dennis Andries v Tommy Hearns and Jeff Harding takes some beating.

Ahh, my memory clearly made it seem bigger. It was certainly scary, I thought I was going to get stabbed, as there were virtually no british supporters there.

When Haye won and they all cheered him, I was mightily relieved.
Nobody seemed to like mormeck, the people in the hotel were quite happy he lost.

Really, 10,000? It was a glorified leisure centre.

On the flipside what about the biggest "letdowns"? Not saying poor performances per se but where when a Brit was seen as in with a real chance and/or with hindsight we underestimated the oppo, and the result was either a shocker and/or completely deflating?

Off top of my head in modern times;

Wlad v haye
Clev v kovalev
Hatton v pac
Khan v Garcia
Hamed v barrera

The Watson vs Mcallum and Jim McDonnell vs Nelson fights, both ended pretty much the same but each one gave great efforts in their bids to become world champs against 2 all time greats.
