Rocky Lockridge

Post by Ambling Alp II »

Have been thinking about him lately. He was a really good fighter. He had some great battles with Pedroza (2x), Gomez and Chavez. He didn't get the decision in any of these fights. a lot of people thought he won the first Pedroza fight, and the second could have gone his way as well. He was totally robbed against Gomez. Even against Chavez, he fought a very competitive fight and made it close.

Imagine if he gets the decisions in these fights? Even 1 of them. His stock would have gone way up. He probably would be considered a great fighter who would be in the HOF.
He did have the meltdown KO loss to Juan LaPorte. On the other hand, he scored a devastating KO against Roger Mayweather. He also won a decision over Boza-Edwards.

I think it would be worth discussing this: Imagine if Lockridge gets the decisions in these fights that went against him? Even 1 of them? How much more highly regarded would he be today?

'meltdown KO loss' against Laporte? not sure what you mean there mate. he was a bit reckless and got caught, hard, coming in, but i never had that down as a meltdown.

He was great to watch, a real fan pleaser in my book. I'm sure it's just old fogeyness but I think he'd just be dominant today.

I thought he clearly beat Pedroza in the 1st fight and Gomez. When I watched his fight with Chavez live I had him winning by 2, when I rewatched it a couple years ago I scored it a draw. In that fight quite a few people thought Chavez was landing the cleaner punches and that alot of Rocky's punches were being blocked. Funny how often that can happen in a bout and the guy doing all the blocking is so sore that his own punch output drops off noticeably, AS Chavez's did !

I am sorry folks, but, in my book, Rocky Lockridge did not win the first fight with the great Eusebio Pedroza. To me, Pedroza won clearly both fights.

Rocky was a very good fighter. That's about it.

Agree mate I recall thinking I would have to be very generous to Chavez to give him anything more than a draw.

The Gomez decision is one of the worst ever, even if Rocky sputtered in the late rounds.

Anyone know how Lockridge is faring these days?

I saw him a few years ago on the A&E series "Intervention," which revealed he had become a homeless, drug addict estranged from his family. Quite sad.

I hope he's gotten his life together somewhat. He was one of the truly entertaining warriors of the 80s.

I think I read somewhere that Julio would not have complained if the decisions had gone against him in the Lockridge and LaPorte bouts.

Tragic. The man was a true warrior in his day. So many have a later life like this in boxing.

Even in a street fight I love the way old Lockridge sets up the overhand right with a jab.

I just meant it was a bad loss. Maybe "meltdown" is not a good way to describe it.

ah okay gotcha. i'm not sure i even agree it was that bad a loss, just that Laporte's heavyhanded counterpunching style was a bad match for the ever-onrushing Lockridge.

Imagine if he just gets one decision in the 4 fights against Pedroza (twice),Gomez, or Chavez?
Wouldn't we rate him a lot higher? For example, he would likely be in the Hall of Fame.

And if we take this further, what if he had got decisions over Pedroza, Gomez, and Chavez? Wouldn't he then be considered one of the ATG's?

The more I think about it, the more I think that we have seriously underrated this guy.
